Kenya Breweries Ltd (KBL) has launched a campaign to promote the use of its Senator Keg brand in Western Kenya, the company’s Managing Director Mr James Musyoki has said, The Standard released September 14.

"The several Senator Keg outlets in the region will provide an alternative to illicit brews such as busaa and chang’aa. Musyoki said KBL’s product was targetted at low-income earners and was preferable to illicit local brews.

Musyoki was speaking to the press when he paid a courtesy call on the Nyanza Provincial Commissioner, Mr Paul Olando, in Kisumu.

Olando welcomed KBL’s move, saying it would assist the Provincial Administration in its fight against insecurity and illicit brews. He said the Government would support and facilitate the licencing of the Senator Keg outlets.

Musyoki also confirmed that KBL has no plans to re-open its Kisumu plant, shut down five years ago.

"Unless the economy expands and grows above the current 5.8 per cent, we cannot consider re-opening the Kisumu plant," he said. "The decision to close down was a difficult one, but it was inevitable."

KBL has continued to use its premises in Kisumu as a depot from where beer is distributed to other towns in the region.
