Brewery news USA, CO: AB InBev to invest $15.5 million in its Fort Collins brewery
Anheuser-Busch announced on May 22 a $15.5 million investment in its Fort Collins brewery, which will go toward upgrading its bottling lines from packed to bulk glass. Shifting away from packed glass allows Fort Collins to streamline production in-house, strengthening its supply chain, reducing emissions, and driving efficiencies across the business. The Fort Collins brewery’s enhanced bottling lines will be fully operational by Summer 2024.

“Investing in the communities where our people live and work is part of who we are,” said Brendan Whitworth, CEO of Anheuser-Busch. “This investment in our Fort Collins brewery not only drives efficiencies for our business and improves the capabilities of our facility, but it also puts Anheuser-Busch in a unique position to build on our industry-leading support for our employees with on-the-job education and growth opportunities for our frontline workers.”

“Transforming our bottling line from a packed glass to bulk glass system enables us to be more efficient with our brewery’s beer production,” said Tim Seitz, General Manager, Anheuser-Busch Fort Collins Brewery. “Enhancing our brewery’s infrastructure also builds on our capabilities as a brewer and gives our employees the opportunity to develop new technical skillsets and personally contribute to the innovation ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VT: Tropic Brewing joins Waterbury’s craft beer scene
Just in time for summer, a beachy new brewery has joined Waterbury's beer scene. On Friday, May 17, the Tropic Brewing opened its taproom at 40 Foundry Street for full pours, bar snacks and 12-ounce to-go cans of its sessionable lower-alcohol beers, Seven Days reported.

Brothers Matt and Zack Gordon brainstormed the biz while on a trip to Puerto Rico, Matt said. "I love Vermont's four seasons, but there's something so fun about that part of the world."

The name also nods to the etymology of trópos — Greek for "a turn or change." Running the Tropic is a career change for brewer Matt, 41, who has lived in Waterbury since 2012 and previously worked for agricultural industry groups, including the Vermont Maple Sugar Makers' Association.

Matt has been homebrewing since age 21, when he purchased a copy of Greg Noonan's New Brewing Lager Beer: The Most Comprehensive Book for Home- and Microbrewers and considered the hobby a creative outlet, he said. He picked it back up in earnest a few years ago, focusing on lagers and sessionable beers, which were harder to find at the time.

Those styles make up the bulk of his brews on the Tropic's four-barrel system. Early favorites include ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Lagunitas to close Chicago brewery, move operations to original brew house in California
Lagunitas Brewing Company is closing its brewing, packaging and restaurant at its Chicago location this summer, according to a letter sent to employees and obtained by ABC7 Chicago on May 23.

The letter said a small number of employees will remain working in the warehouse at the 1843 S. Washtenaw Ave. location.

The closure is expected Aug. 1, the letter said.

In a news release, the brewery said it plans to move its Chicago brewing operations to Lagunitas' original brew house in Petaluma, California.

The changes will affect 86 employees, some of whom will retain remote roles or relocate to California, the release said.

Others will receive retention incentives to work through the transition, as well as departure packages, including support services and job-placement assistance, the release said.

"We are committed to managing this transition thoughtfully, smoothly and with deep respect for our valued Chicago Lagunitas employees," said Sam Kennedy, a Lagunitas spokesperson.

The release said the changes were prompted by a need to future-proof the organization amid changing tides in the craft beverage industry.

"The transition will allow for a more efficient and flexible supply chain, with a greater focus on innovation and the acceleration of more sustainable brewing practices. Chicago remains a priority market for Lagunitas, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Skipping Rock Beer Co. being acquired by Pro Re Nata
Pro Re Nata is taking the hop, skip and jump over the mountain into the Shenandoah Valley, The Daily Progress reported on May 21.

The Crozet-based craft brewery has announced its pending acquisition of Staunton’s Skipping Rock Beer Co., which will be finalized in the coming weeks. The move further expands Pro Re Nata’s footprint in the valley after co-owners John Schoeb and Andrew Messina purchased the city’s old Coca-Cola plant in the fall.

The two brewers had planned to spend the next 18 to 20 months transforming the 26,000-square-foot Coca-Cola space into the company’s primary production facility, but the opportunity to take over Skipping Rock, which closed its Staunton operation in early 2023, practically fell into their lap, said Schoeb.

“We’re super excited, but it’s something we weren’t looking to do,” Schoeb told The Daily Progress. “We just went over there to buy some kegs and keg-washing machines.”

Discussions over a couple of kegs quickly evolved into talks about purchasing the entire Skipping Rock enterprise. As the facility was already fitted with the necessary beermaking equipment, Schoeb and Messina decided to redirect their renovation efforts wholly on that space. Instead of waiting a year and a half, Schoeb estimated it will be another ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, UT: Black-owned Policy Kings Brewery coming to Salt Lake City
Utah's first Black-owned brewery is coming to Salt Lake City, Axios reported on May 22.

Policy Kings Brewery plans to open this fall in the trendy Central 9th neighborhood after outgrowing its original location in Cedar City, owners Deandre and Sara Ridgel announced earlier in May.

Fewer than 1% of America's craft breweries are owned by Black brewers, according to the National Black Brewers Association.

Policy Kings, named for the gambling kingpins of Chicago in the early 20th century, opened six years ago in Cedar City as Utah's first majority Black-owned brewery.

It became a tourism staple in Iron County, particularly with the Shakespeare Festival crowds.

The brewery also was a notable Black cultural center in mostly rural southwest Utah, where less than 1% of the population is Black.

Policy Kings introduced the area's first major Juneteenth celebration and decorated the bar with murals of icons like Prince, Kobe Bryant and Nipsey Hussle.

Expect a similar celebration at the Salt Lake location, where the brewery plans to highlight music and art by Black Utahns.

The Ridgels hoped to expand the brewery in Iron County, where Sara grew up, but couldn't find a suitable building.

The craft beer scene is slowly blossoming in southern Utah — but has a lot ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Molson Coors reaches deal with workers to end Fort Worth strike
Molson Coors and 420 workers at its Fort Worth brewery are ending a three month-long strike after ratifying a new contract with the company late in the afternoon on Wednesday, May 22, the Dallas Morning News reported.

The new three-year contract includes wage increases and a better benefits package for workers and retirees, addressing the same issues workers represented by Teamsters Local 997 went on strike for back in mid-February. The specifics of the deal were not disclosed.

“Our members never gave up, they pushed back on this company until they got a fair contract that recognizes their contributions. Teamsters don’t back down from a fight and we will always fight for what we deserve,” Jeff Padellaro, director of the Teamsters brewery, bakery and soft drink conference, said in a statement.

Despite the strike, the plant’s shutdown didn’t impact supplies of Molson Coors products.

For Molson Coors, putting the strike behind them means the company can get operations in its Fort Worth plant fully back to normal. The contract should satisfy the 400-plus workers who went on strike, said Adam Collins, Molson Coors’ chief communications officer.

“We are pleased to have reached a three-year agreement with Teamsters Local 997 in Fort Worth,” he said. “The ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Spent Grain Brewing proposed for downtown Arlington Heights
What started as Arlington Heights resident Eric Lamkins’ home-brewing hobby is poised to become a full-fledged business in the village’s downtown, the Daily Herald reported on May 23.

But Lamkins’ Spent Grain Brewing truly will be the definition of a small business.

His beer-making operation certainly won’t be on the scale of a Budweiser or Miller, or even the more common microbreweries that have popped up across the city and suburbs.

Inside the recently-closed Bangkok Cafe at 17 N. Vail Ave., will be a nano brewery, where the bearded brewer will craft small batches of his favorite suds.

That’s no more than a single 30-gallon barrel at a time, and it all can be done within the confines of the 2,500-square-foot former restaurant space, he says.

Lamkins presented initial plans to the village’s conceptual plan review committee Wednesday night, where he assuaged any potential neighborhood concerns for odors created through the brewing process.

“The entire system fits inside the kitchen and is ventless,” he said. “I’ve been brewing for 25 years. We actually love the smell of brewing. But we recognize not everybody likes it.”

Most people might recognize a microbrewery from the “big silver towers” filled with beer, Lamkins said, but at the Arlington Heights nano ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ME: Cushnoc Brewing Co. and Colby College announce opening of Cushnoc Cantina in downtown Waterville
In another sign of the city’s vibrant and growing business environment, Cushnoc Brewing Co. and Colby College announced that the popular and successful Augusta-based brewery will open Cushnoc Cantina in downtown Waterville. The new brewery, restaurant, and bar, opening this fall, will be located at the Bill & Joan Alfond Main Street Commons, Colby News reported on May 22.

While the new Waterville location will include some of the brewery’s signature beers, it also will develop and test new beers before they go to market. Additionally, the menu will lean toward a taqueria with an emphasis on offering central Maine diners a different take on traditional Mexican tacos.

Cushnoc Brewing, which began operating in 2018, currently has three locations in Augusta, including a restaurant, annex, and tasting room for private events. In its new location, Cushnoc Cantina will occupy a little over 3,000 square feet of the ground floor at Colby’s Alfond Commons, a residential facility that houses more than 200 Colby students, faculty, and staff.

“We’re really stoked about coming to Waterville and firmly believe we will complement the dynamic food and beverage scene that’s happening in the city,” said Cushnoc Brewing Co. cofounder Tobias Parkhurst. “Our goal is to not ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SC: New Realm Brewing Co. continues to expand across the Southeast
An Atlanta-based craft brewery continues to expand across the Southeast, 11Alive.com reported on May 21.

New Realm Brewing Co. last week opened a new location in Greenville, South Carolina. It marks the company’s fifth brewery in less than a decade since it launched, according to reporting by the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

“More beer in more places is a good thing,” said Carey Falcone, CEO and co-founder of New Realm, in an announcement.

Falcone, Bob Powers and Mitch Steele launched New Realm in 2016 with a flagship location on the Atlanta BeltLine’s Eastside Trail, spanning 20,000 square feet along the popular pedestrian corridor.

New Realm has since expanded to Auburn, Alabama; Charleston, South Carolina; and Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The Greenville location is focused on “brewing creativity and innovation,” according to the announcement. The team says it plans mixed culture fermentations, barrel-aged strong beers, sour styles and fruited beers, among others.

Brewery news USA, CO: Kodiac Brewery Bar & Grill closes its taps for good
After a year-and-a-half, a Centennial brewery has closed its taps, The Denver Post reported on May 21.

Kodiac Brewery Bar & Grill at 7685 E. Arapahoe Road had its last day of business this past Saturday, May 18. The brewery announced the closure on its social media pages last week, but did not provide a reason behind it.

Kodiac, owned by Raj Chiluka and Nanda Maranani, opened in the 5,200-square-foot space in January 2023. The owners did not respond to requests for comment. Maranani is also the owner of the franchise Indian restaurant Hyderabad House, which is located next door to Kodiac.

Ten-year brewery veteran Stephen Monahan was hired as Kodiac’s head brewer, but left Kodiac in June to open his own concept, Monolith Brewery in Platt Park. Jeff Joslin, the former director of brewing at Left Hand Brewery, took over after Monahan left, according to Westword.

Kodiac’s beer offerings include a cranberry stout, a brown beer ale and a cranberry IPA, according to its website. It also has non-beer offerings, like a pomegranate and acai hard seltzer and a pear cider.

The space is being marketed for sublease by Jeff Germain with Stratus Brookers. According to the listing, all fixtures and furniture are also ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Drinkers would pay more for eco-friendly beers, survey finds out
The majority of drinkers are more likely to buy planet-friendly beers in bars and supermarkets, according to a global survey by Pall Corporation, The Drinks Business reported on May 23.

Beer drinkers are willing to pay more for their pint if it helps to ease the planet’s global warming crisis, according to data released in a survey, conducted by the water and waste reduction company.

Almost half of 3,500 respondents across seven countries said they would choose a more expensive, but more sustainably-produced beer over a less expensive rival that does more damage to the environment. Plus, despite the cost-of-living crisis, respondents said they would be prepared to pay up to 30% more for a “greener” pint produced in a way that reduces waste and water and energy consumption.

The survey findings also found beer lovers are more aware of – and concerned about – the environmental impact of their pint than ever before with almost two-thirds (61%) having admitted that the sustainability of their beer now directly affected their choices in pubs, bars and supermarkets.

Pall Corporation beer market manager Roland Pahl-Dobrick said: “Consumers are considering the environmental impact when deciding which beer to purchase. Consumers have an interest in the brewing process ...More info on site
