News Articles

Brewery news Japan & USA: Suntory in early talks to acquire Boston Beer - report
Boston Beer surged on May 31 as the American brewer is in talks to sell the company to global spirits company Suntory, the Wall Street reported, citing unnamed sources.

Boston Beer Company Inc was up more than 30% on the news.

Negotiations remain at an early stage, and there isn't certainty that deal will reach, the sources told WSJ, while the potential for another suitor could emerge.

Speculation about a sale comes as Boston Beer has suffered a rough year so far as changing consumer tastes have dented demand.

Suntory knows Boston Beer well after teaming up with the latter in 2021 to produce new spirits and ready-to-drink beverages.

Boston Beer declined to comment.

Suntory didn't immediately reply to a request for comment.

Brewery news USA: Brewers Association secures $2 mln grant to open and develop new export markets
The Brewers Association (BA) has secured a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as part of the new Regional Agricultural Promotion Program (RAPP), which is focused on opening and developing new export markets, Craft Brewing Business reported on May 30.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that the USDA is allocating $300 million overall to 66 U.S. organizations to help boost demand for American food and farm exports in high-potential markets globally — that includes craft beer.

From the press release:

“USDA and the entire Biden-Harris Administration are focused on creating more, new and better markets for U.S. producers and agribusinesses, and exports are a critical part of that effort,” Vilsack said. “By enabling U.S. exporters to expand their footprint in diverse and dynamic new markets, RAPP will help make them more competitive and resilient in an increasingly volatile global trading environment. We know the potential is out there, but it takes time and money to grow new markets. USDA is pleased to be able to provide the start-up capital to help tap into these opportunities, because if we are serious about reversing the decline of small and mid-sized farms, and building wealth that stays in rural communities, it’s ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Anchor Brewing to be purchased by Chobani yogurt CEO - report
Anchor Brewing will have a new owner almost a year after the legendary San Francisco brewery abruptly went out of business, ABC7 News reported on May 31.

Anchor will be purchased by the 51-year-old billionaire founder and CEO of Chobani yogurt, Hamdi Ulukaya, ABC7 News sources have confirmed.

He is reportedly buying the brewery lock, stock and barrel. It's believed Ulukaya has been meeting or will meet with stakeholders.

Anchor - founded in San Francisco in 1896 - was shuttered in July by its former owner, Sapporo Breweries.

Ulukaya's pending purchase of the brewery is set to be announced publicly on May 31, it is reported.

Brewery news USA, OH: Tricky Tortoise Brewing Co. finally welcomes the public into its Willoughby location
After eight months of work, Bobby Ehasz has finally welcomed the public into Tricky Tortoise Brewing Co. The doors of his new brewery officially opened for the first time over Memorial Day Weekend, Cleveland Magazine reported on May 28.

Ehasz, a partner in Pompatus Brewing in Bainbridge, started with a dark, cavernous building that had been vacant since early 2020. The bulk of the work has been devoted to making the space, long home to Willoughby Brewing, feel lighter, brighter and more welcoming. Walls were removed, flooring replaced, booths extracted, lighting updated, and fixtures and furniture upgraded.

Already, Caleb Brown, a brewer who worked at Platform/AB and Thirsty Dog, has assembled a tasty roster of beers for opening weekend. He’s starting with a couple IPAs, a cream ale, and a helles brewed in collaboration with Akronym Brewing. There’s also a house-brewed lime seltzer. In the pipeline, says Brown, is a brown ale, black lager and West Coast IPA.

“In my mind, you’re always pushing to educate the consumer towards balance and nuance rather than to how many hops can we throw in this and how many flavors can you throw in that,” Brown says. “I think that’s what we’re seeing in the craft ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Molson Coors to brew Peroni Nastro Azurro beer in the US
Molson Coors announced on May 29 that it will begin brewing Peroni Nastro Azzurro stateside to supply the U.S. market. The production is set to take off this summer at Molson Coors’ brewery in Albany, Georgia, Vinepair reported.

“We’ve spent the last few months working closely with Peroni’s talented master brewers to make certain we stay true to the brand’s crisp refreshing taste and honor its original recipe from 1963,” says the company’s chief supply chain officer, Brian Erhardt. “By brewing Peroni at home, we can ensure consumers can get fresh, great-tasting Peroni at even more of their favorite restaurants, bars, shops and events across the country.”

Supply issues and simultaneous brand expansion appear to be factors in the move. According to a Molson Coors spokesperson who spoke with Beer Business Daily, many on-premise accounts claim to be hesitant to give Peroni draft line real estate due to the troubles that come with importing the beer in small quantities. With domestic production, “we can overcome one of the biggest issues to scaling the brand, which is reliable supply,” they said.

According to Molson Coors, kegs of domestically-brewed full-strength Peroni will be available by the end of the summer, with packaged bottles and cans ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Dough Daddy Brewery debuts in West Deer
Angie Bogacz, wife of Caliente Pizza & Draft House Founder and President Nick Bogacz, took her love of hops and hospitality to the next level by purchasing the former Strange Roots Experimental Ales tasting room and beer garden in the Gibsonia neighborhood of West Deer. The revamped space debuted on May 24 with a dozen house-made brews and a seltzer on tap, canned wine, Sicilian-style pies and other elevated pub fare such as truffle fries, a one-pound German pretzel, paninis, salads and desserts, Pittsburgh Magazine reported on May 30.

“This is my dream,” Angie says. “We’ve been wanting to do beer forever.”

In 2012, during a celebration that coincided with Little Italy Days and Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week, the couple launched Caliente in Bloomfield to sell gourmet pizzas and a large selection of craft brews. There are now seven restaurants throughout Pittsburgh and stands at PNC Park, PPG Paints Arena and Acrisure Stadium. A new spot on Babcock Boulevard in the North Hills is expected to open this summer. Caliente also has brought back several top awards over the last decade competing in the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas.

Dough Daddy was founded last year as a contract brew collaboration with Strange ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Deep Ellum Brewing shuts down its taproom and brewhouse
Deep Ellum Brewing has announced in a social media post that it will shut down its taproom and brewhouse, seemingly effective immediately, Eater Dallas reported on May 30.

Deep Ellum Brewing was started in 2011 by founder John Reardon. Since then, it has become well-known for its signature brews, Dallas Blonde and Deep Ellum IPA. The brand sold to Canarchy in 2018, the Dallas Morning News reported. Following that, Reardon was forced out following a lawsuit in 2020, in which the founder alleged that the new company and its parent company, Fireman Capital Partners, did not pay him as agreed and that it deliberately sabotaged the brewery’s success to avoid making those payments. Reardon then started Deep Ellum Distillery.

In 2022, Monster Beverage Corporation bought the brand when it purchased Canarchy in a $330 million sale.

“While our hearts are heavy with this news today, our love for Deep Ellum will always run deep,” the brand wrote to close its statement, offering assurances that the beers under the Deep Ellum Brewing umbrella will still be produced and available across Texas. It is unclear what those beers will be or how extensive the selection will remain.

Brewery news South Korea: OB to start selling its Cas 0.0 at restaurants for the first time in history
OB Beer, the No. 1 beer maker in Korea, will sell its non-alcoholic beer Cas 0.0 at regular restaurants from next month for the first time in the industry. Competition in the non-alcoholic beer market, which has been limited to the home market, is expected to heat up as general liquor wholesalers can supply not only alcohol but also non-alcoholic beverages to restaurants.

According to the Ministry of Strategy and Finance on the 28th, a revision to the Enforcement Decree of the Liquor License Act (Enforcement Decree of the Liquor License Act), which allows general liquor wholesalers to supply non-alcoholic beverages to restaurants along with alcohol, was approved at the Cabinet meeting.

Until now, general liquor wholesalers who supply liquor products to restaurants have only been able to distribute alcohol with an alcohol content of 1% or more. As a result, non-alcoholic beer has been neglected in the restaurant market and has only been sold in the home market. However, the demand for non-alcoholic products has increased significantly in recent years as the trend of "Helsifleisure" that pursues both health and pleasure has continued and the "zero" craze has risen.

As a result, OB Beer will sell 330ml bottle products of the non-alcoholic ...More info on site
