Brewery news Belgium: Haacht brewery announces job cuts
Brewery Haacht’s announcement of job cuts has not come as a surprise to unions ACV and ABVV, The Brussels Times reported on November 21.

The Flemish company from Boortmeerbeek revealed on November 19 that it will cut twenty jobs, including eleven office positions and nine labour roles. Among the labour positions, one job is from a worker who is retiring and will not be replaced.

Six of the twenty job cuts will affect the transport department, specifically drivers of tractors and trailers. The remaining positions are spread across nearly all departments. However, new jobs will also be created, resulting in a net loss of around 14 to 15 positions.

Union representatives, Femke Buys from ACV and Pieter Van Der Elst from ABVV, were not shocked by the announcement. "We knew this would happen," said Van Der Elst. "The brewery has been struggling financially for years."

There is uncertainty about whether this round of layoffs will be sufficient to restore profitability. "We hope these will be the last job cuts," Buys added. "But the beer market is under pressure, and the outlook remains bleak. However, the management has assured us that shareholders still have confidence in the company, which is somewhat reassuring."

Due to the restructuring ...More info on site

Brewery news Cambodia: Prime Minister halts issuance of licenses for domestic beer production, only allows export
Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet announced a decision to stop issuing licenses for beer production intended for domestic distribution and permit licensing only for breweries aimed at export, Khmer Times reported.

The premier spoke on Thursday, November 21 at the closing of the Ministry of Mines and Energy’s annual meeting at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra.

Premier Hun Manet underscored, “Licenses for local beer production have now been suspended.”

“At present, there are seven breweries operating for domestic distribution. If a business intends to export, I will grant approval, but no additional licenses will be issued for local production. I want to clarify this in case anyone is interested in obtaining such licenses.”

The Prime Minister underlined that the Royal Government of Cambodia is committed to guiding and advising the private sector in alignment with market demands, ensuring that new investments respond to actual needs.

In addition to the decision regarding breweries for domestic consumption, the premier added that for other investment projects with limited market demand, the Royal Government will refrain from granting licenses. Instead, it will prioritise strengthening and expanding the capacity of existing businesses to meet current market needs effectively.

Brewery news South Korea: Hite Jinro’s Terra beer enjoys growing demand in Korea
South Korea’s Hite Jinro announced on November 21st that the cumulative sales of its beer brand Terra exceeded 5.08 billion bottles as of the 20th. This means that 28 bottles (330mL) were sold per second, and a total of 1.67 billion litres were sold, mk.co.kr reported.

Terra exceeded 1 million box sales 39 days after its launch in March 2019 and continued to grow explosively, setting a record for sales at the fastest pace among beer brands.

Since then, despite the crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has continued its trend with an annual average growth rate of 26% over the past five years, and has now become a representative beer brand in Korea.

The performance of Terra Light, which was released in July, is also driving sales growth. Since the launch of Terra Light, the home market sales of Terra brands in July-August, the peak beer season, have increased 13% year-on-year.

According to market researcher Nielsen Korea, Terra Light became the No. 1 seller of light beer in large discount stores nationwide within a month of its launch, leading the sales gap with the second-largest brand by more than 1.5 times by October.

Oh Sung-taek, managing director of Hite Jinro Marketing Office, said, "Terra ...More info on site

Brewery news USA & Venezuela: Venezuela’s Empresas Polar launches Polar Premium Beer in the US
Venezuelan food and beverage company Empresas Polar is looking to make a bigger splash in the United States with a flagship beer that’s being brewed in U.S. The new Polar Premium Beer is being brewed at the Empresas Polar plant in Auburndale, Florida, Craft Brewing Business reported on November 21.

Empresas Polar boast more than 83 years of experience and actually have more than 35 years in the U.S. through its Polar Pilsen brand. For Polar Premium, the company says they are sourcing North American ingredients, including Canadian malted barley and hops from Yakima Valley in Washington.

It is a source of pride to add Polar Premium Beer to our global portfolio—a beer that has everything to win over American consumers, who, while familiar with a wide variety of beer styles, are always seeking quality and new experiences, like the robust and elegant flavor our beer delivers,” said María Alexandra Mendoza, marketing director for Empresas Polar’s International Business Division.

Whisky news Spain & UK: Suntory to move bottling of Irish whiskey brands to Scotland and Spain
Japanese drinks giant Suntory has decided to move the bottling of three Irish whiskey brands made at its Cooley Distillery offshore, The Drinks Business reported on November 22.

The distillery produces Suntory’s Kilbeggan, Tyrconnell and Connemara Irish whiskey brands, all of which will now be bottled in Scotland and Spain.

According to the Irish Independent, the company informed distillery staff of the change last month, but is yet to finalise plans.

“On October 9, 2024, we announced that the group would plan to relocate bottling activity for Irish brands from Cooley Distillery to other group sites in Spain and Scotland, and a communication was made to employees of a proposal,” newly-filed accounts for the Cooley Distillery confirmed.

“However, at the time of the financial statements’ sign off, the total financial impact cannot be quantified until the consultation process is completed,” the company added.

Last year the distillery saw turnover decline 4.5% to €19.1m. Pre-tax profits dropped 23% to €1.1m over the same 12-month period.

Suntory suspended all shipments of alcohol to Russia in March 2022, a move which hit sales of its Kilbeggan brand, of which Russia was formerly a key market.

Its three Irish whiskey brands will now be bottled in either Scotland, where Suntory owns ...More info on site
