USA: Brewers Association reports 4% drop in craft beer output 2024, number of breweries declines for the first time since 2005
|
The Brewers Association, the trade association representing America’s small and independent breweries, released on April 15 its annual craft brewing industry production report for 2024. As part of that report, the Association also ranks America’s largest craft breweries.
The Association defines a craft brewery as a brewery with annual production of 6 million barrels of beer or less (approximately 3 percent of U.S. annual sales), with less than 25 percent of the brewery owned or controlled (or equivalent economic interest) by a beverage alcohol industry member that is not itself a craft brewer.
The Brewers Association reported that craft breweries in America produced 4.0% less beer in 2024 than in 2023. That reduction to 23.1 million barrels brewed in 2024 is indicative of recent headwinds the industry has faced as consumers are drinking less and watching budgets. However, with price adjustments, the retail dollar value of beer from craft brewers grew 3% in 2024, to $28.9 billion.

Europe: 1 in 15 beers served in Europe is now alcohol-free
|
Europe boasts the largest non-alcoholic beer industry in the world. Can the region provide a roadmap for future alcohol-free beer growth globally?
Europe starts off with a strong beer heritage, particularly in countries such as Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, BeverageDaily.com reported on April 15.
That means there is a continent full of brewing experts and beer lovers. And alcohol-free brews have slowly and surely been creeping onto the scene for far longer than most people realize.
Today, it represents a booming market with plenty of potential for further growth: 2.2 billion litres of non-alcoholic beer already brewed every year.
And 1 in 15 beers served on the continent is now alcohol-free.
“Non-alcoholic beer was already part of brewers’ portfolios 30 years ago, it’s not new,” explained Julie Leferman, secretary of the Brewers of Europe, the industry association that represents the interests of some 10,000 brewers across the continent.

World: Molson Coors Beverage Company's CEO to retire at the end of 2025
|
Molson Coors Beverage Company's chief executive officer and industry veteran Gavin Hattersley will retire at the end of 2025 after six years in the role, the Coors Light maker said on April 14.
Hattersley's retirement comes as alcoholic beverage makers are under pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico and China - key suppliers of essential ingredients and materials for the industry.
The company stated that it would look at both internal and external candidates to find a replacement for Hattersley, who has been in the beer industry since 1997, including a long tenure at South African Breweries.
Hattersley was also involved in the creation of the MillerCoors joint venture in the United States in 2008, following SAB's acquisition of Miller in 2002
He later became CEO of Molson Coors in 2019, about three years after their acquisition of MillerCoors, making them the third largest global brewer at the time.

Africa & Middle East: Heineken appoints new Africa & Middle East operations lead
|
The regional lead for Heineken’s Africa & Middle East operations will step down in July, with the group’s MD for Mexico taking his place, Global Drinks Intel reported on April 14.
Guillaume Duverdier (below) has been appointed to assume the regional presidency once Roland Pirmez steps down after almost 30 years with the brewer. Pirmez has overseen the AME region for the last decade, during which he “led the business through major volatility, including the Covid pandemic and major currency devaluations”.
Pirmez’s tenure also included the protracted acquisition of Distell and Namibia Breweries, which completed two years ago, and November’s confirmation of plans to build a brewery in Dubai.
Duverdier’s time with Heineken dates back to 2000, since when he has held MD positions in Tunisia, Egypt, Poland and Spain. He has headed up the Mexican market since the start of 2022.

South Korea: Jeju Beer Company rebrands amid ownership change
|
Jeju Beer Company, the first craft brewery to enter the stock market in South Korea, has had its owner change for the second time in less than five years since its listing. The new majority shareholder is a force primarily engaged in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) of KOSDAQ corporations. A company that started as a small craft brewery and was expected to grow into one of the top four beer corporations in the country has now fallen into the status of a distressed corporation in just a few years, ChosunBiz reported on April 14.
Jeju Beer Company recently changed its name to HanWool & Jeju. The business objectives now include semiconductor device manufacturing and waste management, which are unrelated to its original craft beer production.
Jeju Beer Company is erasing its identity as a craft beer producer, which is related to the change in its majority shareholder. The majority shareholder of Jeju Beer Company changed from the previous Double H M to HanWool Semiconductor in November last year. HanWool Semiconductor holds 24.2% equity in Jeju Beer Company.

Armenia: Beer production up 8.1% in January-February
|
In January-February 2025, Armenia’s alcoholic beverages production decreased, except for whiskey and beer, Finport.am reported on April 7.
According to the RA Statistical Committee, the nation’s whiskey output amounted to 360 thousand litres, which is 90.3% higher than the figure for the previous year.
The volume of beer output increased by 8.1% year-on-year, amounting to 2.6 million litres.
Cognac production decreased by 45.3% to 2 million litres, wine - by 33.3% to 845.6 thousand litres, and sparkling wine (champagne) - by 15.8% to 124.6 thousand litres.
The production of vodka, liqueur and other alcoholic beverages decreased year-on-year by 3.9% to 143.3 thousand litres, it is reported.

Ukraine: Barley crop 2025/26 forecast at 5.3 mln tonnes

As spring planting continues in Ukraine, its agriculture ministry and consultancy APK-Inform issued their respective crop forecasts. The reports were issued just as Ukraine was still in a bitter cold snap that brought snow to most parts of the country, Farmtario reported on April 14.
Ukraine is a major player on the world wheat export market, with production there influencing global trade flows.
“April’s cold weather has affected the sowing season – it has actually stopped for a week. Compared to last year, 200,000 hectares less land has been sown so far,” first deputy farm minister Taras Vysotskiy commented to the state news agency Ukrinform.
As of April 11, 1.25 million hectares of spring crops were planted, comprised of 612,200 hectares of barley, with wheat at 141,100, peas at 182,800 and oats at 106,100.
Meanwhile, APK-Inform projected Ukraine’s grain production for 2025/26 to grow 7.5 per cent at 57.52 million tonnes. Of that, the corn crop is to expand 17.8 per cent at 29.16 million tonnes, but wheat is to slip 1.2 per cent at 21.50 million. The barley is expected to come in at 5.30 million tonnes.

UK: Speyside Distillery secures planning permission for modernisation
|
Scottish company Glasgow Whisky has secured planning permission to modernise the Speyside Distillery in Tromie Mills near Kingussie, The Spirits Business reported on April 15.
Speyside Distillery, featured in the BBC series Monarch of the Glen, has been known as the home of Spey single malt whisky, produced by Speyside Distillers.
Glasgow Whisky acquired the site in April 2021 for an undisclosed amount, while Speyside Distillers continued operating the facility until its lease expired in April 2025.
Now under new management, Glasgow Whisky has secured planning permission from the Highland Council to transform the distillery into a low-carbon operation.
The plans include modernising and upgrading the Speyside Distillery, which is said to pave the way for a sustainable future for the historic site.
Speyside Distillery was built on the site of a former barley mill and croft from the 1700s, with distillation commencing in 1990.
The approved redevelopment aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions in whisky production. Designed by Organic Architects, the project will integrate the latest energy-efficient technologies to minimise environmental impact while aiming to preserve the site’s character.
