USA: Brewers Association reports 4% drop in craft beer output 2024, number of breweries declines for the first time since 2005
|
The Brewers Association, the trade association representing America’s small and independent breweries, released on April 15 its annual craft brewing industry production report for 2024. As part of that report, the Association also ranks America’s largest craft breweries.
The Association defines a craft brewery as a brewery with annual production of 6 million barrels of beer or less (approximately 3 percent of U.S. annual sales), with less than 25 percent of the brewery owned or controlled (or equivalent economic interest) by a beverage alcohol industry member that is not itself a craft brewer.
The Brewers Association reported that craft breweries in America produced 4.0% less beer in 2024 than in 2023. That reduction to 23.1 million barrels brewed in 2024 is indicative of recent headwinds the industry has faced as consumers are drinking less and watching budgets. However, with price adjustments, the retail dollar value of beer from craft brewers grew 3% in 2024, to $28.9 billion.
Craft breweries’ share of the overall beer market by volume remained flat at 13.3%, but that overall beer market declined 1.2% by volume in 2024. Beer from craft brewers is generally more expensive than beer made by large, multinational brewing companies, so craft beer accounted

Canada, AB: Old Yale Brewing working on its third location in Beaumont
|
Old Yale Brewing, a Chilliwack, BC-based craft brewery, revealed it was working on its third Canadian location in Beaumont last summer. The spot is slated to open to the public in May, Daily Hive reported on April 11.
The 11,000-square-foot two-storey space will house over 400 seats. It’s set to be the perfect spot to enjoy the warmer weather as the brewery will have not one but three patios to enjoy.
Old Yale’s Beaumont facility will also house a 100-square-foot, 7.5-hectoliter brewery and two full-service bars, each offering 20 beers on tap and a selection of cocktails, wine, and cider.
The brewery will also have a kitchen serving up a campfire-inspired menu of dishes.
Sticking with the brand’s iconic camping theme, a cozy cabin kids’ play area, two stages for live music, private booths, an indoor fireplace, a mural, and private room rentals.
Old Yale started its journey in Chilliwack in 1999, moving its production facility and craft brewery kitchen in 2016. It then opened a second location in Abbotsford in 2023.

USA, CA: Freewheel Brewing to debut location in San Rafael
|
According to a recently submitted permit application, Bay Area-based business Freewheel Brewing plans to debut a new location in San Rafael, WhatNow reported on April 14.
Coming to 924 B Street, the eatery will land near establishments such as the cocktail Bar California Gold, the Italian restaurant Il David, and Uchiwa Ramen.
For readers who are unfamiliar with Freewheel, the eatery offers a brief introduction on its website: “Welcome to Freewheel Brewing Company, where tradition meets innovation in the heart of our craft. Established in 2012, our mission has been to seamlessly fuse the time-honored brewing traditions of England with the vibrant spirit of American craft beer.
“The brewery started a journey with a passion for British-style brewing, which led to commission brewery from a UK manufacturer,” the statement continues. “Our brewery was crafted in Bury, Lancashire (famous for black pudding) in 2012.”
“Originally founded by four friends, the brewery underwent a significant transition in 2023 when new ownership took over with a vision to improve and expand our unique and delicious offerings.”
What Now San Francisco briefly spoke with one of the concept’s new owners, Chirag Dangi, but he could not provide additional information before publication.
An opening date has not been announced yet.

USA, CA: Fort Point Beer Company merging with Rosa’s HenHouse Brewing Co. and moving all its operations up to Sonoma County
|
San Francisco’s famed microbrewery Fort Point Beer Company won’t exactly be a San Francisco microbrewery anymore, as it’s merging with Santa Rosa’s HenHouse Brewing Co. and moving all its operations up to Sonoma County, SFist reported on April 15.
In the now ten years it’s been around, the Presidio's Fort Point Beer Company has become San Francisco's biggest independent craft beer brewery — though that’s mostly because their largest competitors have been bought up by international conglomerates or just plain gone out of business for the time being. And today we wake to the news of another merger in the craft beer industry, as the Chronicle reports that Fort Point, makers of the popular local brews KSA, Villager, Westfalia, and Animal IPA, is merging with Santa Rosa’s HenHouse Brewing Co., and moving its beer production up north to Sonoma County.
“Teaming up makes us stronger and allows us to continue doing what we do best–together: making fresh, balanced, award-winning beers & ciders in the Bay Area for generations to come,” the two breweries said in a joint Instagram post Tuesday. “While our teams will be working side by side, not much will change for you, and we think that’s a really good

The acquisition, pending all necessary approvals, includes the full operation of Mayflower's Plymouth, MA brewery and taproom, as well as their Beer Garden collaboration with The Pinehills on the Village Green, also in Plymouth.”

USA, TX: Rahr & Sons Brewing Co. to move to a new Fort Worth location
|
Rahr & Sons Brewing Co., which helped usher in the Texas craft beer boom and was a trailblazer in the South Main revival, is planning to move to a new Fort Worth location, Fort Worth Report said on April 7.
The company, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, said in a Facebook post it is seeking a new location for its brewery, now located at 701 Galveston Ave., just off South Main Street in the Near Southside.
Rahr & Sons said in the Facebook post on April 6 that it has “surpassed the capabilities of our current location” and is searching for a new home. Rahr’s beers range from lagers like Rahr’s Blonde and Texas Red to ales such as Iron Thistle, Winter Warmer and other seasonal offerings.
The post said Rahr beer “will still be brewed by the same talented brewers in Fort Worth” and that it will continue to be available in restaurants, bars and stores.
The brewery’s tap room, which was the location for many events as well as regular weekend tours, will remain open until May 17.

USA, WA: Heathen Brewing Feral Public House set to move but not quite yet
|
Downtown Vancouver’s Heathen Brewing Feral Public House is set to move but not quite yet, the restaurant’s owner said.
Heathen’s 5,000-square-foot building at 1109 Washington St. went up for sale recently for just under $2.4 million.
“After a lot of thought, we’ve decided to list the Feral building for sale,” Heathen owner Sunny Parsons posted on social media. “Not because anything is wrong, but because we’re shifting our vision for the future.”
Parsons said the company plans to reinvest in one or two smaller locations that “fit the vibe of our Brewery Kitchen location.”
The Feral Public House opened in 2015 as an extension of Parsons’ Heathen Brewing, which moved into its Salmon Creek pub on Northeast 119th Street around 2013 after starting out as a direct-sale brewery.
Parsons’ company, Capital Fermentation Unlimited LLC, bought the downtown building in 2016 for $1.2 million, according to county records.
Finding the right buyer could take years, Parsons said.
So, he added, the Feral Public House is going to debut a streamlined menu and expanded cocktail selection.
He also said the restaurant will have a bigger focus on catering and private events.
“No matter what, we’ll continue to evolve and serve up the great food, drinks and atmosphere you love,” he said.

Europe: 1 in 15 beers served in Europe is now alcohol-free
|
Europe boasts the largest non-alcoholic beer industry in the world. Can the region provide a roadmap for future alcohol-free beer growth globally?
Europe starts off with a strong beer heritage, particularly in countries such as Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, BeverageDaily.com reported on April 15.
That means there is a continent full of brewing experts and beer lovers. And alcohol-free brews have slowly and surely been creeping onto the scene for far longer than most people realize.
Today, it represents a booming market with plenty of potential for further growth: 2.2 billion litres of non-alcoholic beer already brewed every year.
And 1 in 15 beers served on the continent is now alcohol-free.
“Non-alcoholic beer was already part of brewers’ portfolios 30 years ago, it’s not new,” explained Julie Leferman, secretary of the Brewers of Europe, the industry association that represents the interests of some 10,000 brewers across the continent.
“But what’s changed is the quality of the product, because of the innovation in technology and production for this type of beer, and the investment in marketing and advertising to really make non-alcoholic beer a legitimate choice.
“It’s no longer a negative option, but a positive one that consumers can choose to have. And the availability

Ukraine: Barley crop 2025/26 forecast at 5.3 mln tonnes
|
As spring planting continues in Ukraine, its agriculture ministry and consultancy APK-Inform issued their respective crop forecasts. The reports were issued just as Ukraine was still in a bitter cold snap that brought snow to most parts of the country, Farmtario reported on April 14.
Ukraine is a major player on the world wheat export market, with production there influencing global trade flows.
“April’s cold weather has affected the sowing season – it has actually stopped for a week. Compared to last year, 200,000 hectares less land has been sown so far,” first deputy farm minister Taras Vysotskiy commented to the state news agency Ukrinform.
As of April 11, 1.25 million hectares of spring crops were planted, comprised of 612,200 hectares of barley, with wheat at 141,100, peas at 182,800 and oats at 106,100.
Meanwhile, APK-Inform projected Ukraine’s grain production for 2025/26 to grow 7.5 per cent at 57.52 million tonnes. Of that, the corn crop is to expand 17.8 per cent at 29.16 million tonnes, but wheat is to slip 1.2 per cent at 21.50 million. The barley is expected to come in at 5.30 million tonnes.
The consultancy noted the country’s ag ministry had yet to issues its grain outlook for 2025/26, but

World: Molson Coors Beverage Company's CEO to retire at the end of 2025
|
Molson Coors Beverage Company's chief executive officer and industry veteran Gavin Hattersley will retire at the end of 2025 after six years in the role, the Coors Light maker said on April 14.
Hattersley's retirement comes as alcoholic beverage makers are under pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico and China - key suppliers of essential ingredients and materials for the industry.
The company stated that it would look at both internal and external candidates to find a replacement for Hattersley, who has been in the beer industry since 1997, including a long tenure at South African Breweries.
Hattersley was also involved in the creation of the MillerCoors joint venture in the United States in 2008, following SAB's acquisition of Miller in 2002
He later became CEO of Molson Coors in 2019, about three years after their acquisition of MillerCoors, making them the third largest global brewer at the time.

Africa & Middle East: Heineken appoints new Africa & Middle East operations lead
|
The regional lead for Heineken’s Africa & Middle East operations will step down in July, with the group’s MD for Mexico taking his place, Global Drinks Intel reported on April 14.
Guillaume Duverdier (below) has been appointed to assume the regional presidency once Roland Pirmez steps down after almost 30 years with the brewer. Pirmez has overseen the AME region for the last decade, during which he “led the business through major volatility, including the Covid pandemic and major currency devaluations”.
Pirmez’s tenure also included the protracted acquisition of Distell and Namibia Breweries, which completed two years ago, and November’s confirmation of plans to build a brewery in Dubai.
Duverdier’s time with Heineken dates back to 2000, since when he has held MD positions in Tunisia, Egypt, Poland and Spain. He has headed up the Mexican market since the start of 2022.
“Roland [Pirmez] is an exceptional team builder with a strong focus on nurturing talent,” said CEO Dolf van den Brink. “I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for his valuable contributions to the business and wish him a well-deserved retirement.
“Guillaume’s successful track record of 25 years within Heineken will ensure a smooth transition. I extend my thanks for

South Korea: Jeju Beer Company rebrands amid ownership change
|
Jeju Beer Company, the first craft brewery to enter the stock market in South Korea, has had its owner change for the second time in less than five years since its listing. The new majority shareholder is a force primarily engaged in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) of KOSDAQ corporations. A company that started as a small craft brewery and was expected to grow into one of the top four beer corporations in the country has now fallen into the status of a distressed corporation in just a few years, ChosunBiz reported on April 14.
Jeju Beer Company recently changed its name to HanWool & Jeju. The business objectives now include semiconductor device manufacturing and waste management, which are unrelated to its original craft beer production.
Jeju Beer Company is erasing its identity as a craft beer producer, which is related to the change in its majority shareholder. The majority shareholder of Jeju Beer Company changed from the previous Double H M to HanWool Semiconductor in November last year. HanWool Semiconductor holds 24.2% equity in Jeju Beer Company.
Jeju Beer Company also decided to acquire KIB Ventures, a new technology finance company, on the 8th. HanWool Semiconductor, the majority shareholder of Jeju Beer Company,

UK: Speyside Distillery secures planning permission for modernisation
|
Scottish company Glasgow Whisky has secured planning permission to modernise the Speyside Distillery in Tromie Mills near Kingussie, The Spirits Business reported on April 15.
Speyside Distillery, featured in the BBC series Monarch of the Glen, has been known as the home of Spey single malt whisky, produced by Speyside Distillers.
Glasgow Whisky acquired the site in April 2021 for an undisclosed amount, while Speyside Distillers continued operating the facility until its lease expired in April 2025.
Now under new management, Glasgow Whisky has secured planning permission from the Highland Council to transform the distillery into a low-carbon operation.
The plans include modernising and upgrading the Speyside Distillery, which is said to pave the way for a sustainable future for the historic site.
Speyside Distillery was built on the site of a former barley mill and croft from the 1700s, with distillation commencing in 1990.
The approved redevelopment aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions in whisky production. Designed by Organic Architects, the project will integrate the latest energy-efficient technologies to minimise environmental impact while aiming to preserve the site’s character.
Bari Reid, director at Organic Architects, commented: “Energy efficiency within the whisky industry has advanced significantly since the days of Monarch of the Glen and certainly
