Malaysia: Carlsberg CEO describes Malaysia as a “strategic stronghold market”
|
Carlsberg Group CEO Jacob Aarup-Andersen has described Malaysia as a “strategic stronghold market” of the brewer, The Sun reported on April 20.
Despite a challenging environment, Carlsberg Malaysia delivered solid growth in revenue and net profit for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2024. It reported a 5.1% increase in revenue to RM2.4 billion and a 3% growth in net profit to RM337.1 million.
“Asia remains a region with volume and value growth opportunities, and we will continue to accelerate growth in Asia,” Aarup-Andersen said during a recent trip to Malaysia. “I am pleased with our solid performance in Malaysia, where we have seen strong growth for both the Carlsberg and 1664 brands. Malaysia was a key contributor to our overall performance last year, with strong growth in earnings and a continued focus on premiumisation and innovation.”
At the heart of Carlsberg Group’s long-term vision is a deep commitment to sustainability – not just as a business imperative, but as a shared responsibility to the planet and future generations. Myanmar: Carlsberg stepping up efforts in Myanmar’s beer market
|
Danish brewer Carlsberg is stepping up its efforts in Myanmar’s beer market, where international players are gaining ground amid shifting consumer preferences following the 2021 military coup, Scandasia reported on April 20.
According to a recent report by Nikkei Asia, Carlsberg is actively chasing market leader Heineken through a local joint venture. The company is optimistic about the future, with a spokesperson noting positive momentum across all sales channels, including wholesale and retail, as beer consumption rebounds from pandemic-era lows.
Rather than relying solely on its flagship Carlsberg label, the Danish brewer has found growing success with its Yoma brand, a local offering known for its affordability and high alcohol content—ranging from 6.5% to 8%. This strategy has helped the company connect with cost-conscious consumers seeking stronger brews.
Looking ahead, Carlsberg aims to strengthen its position in the market by introducing its internationally recognized Danish label Tuborg, targeting a broader segment of Myanmar’s increasingly brand-aware beer drinkers.
Carlsberg also emphasizes its local engagement. The company reports that 99% of its employees in Myanmar are local citizens, underscoring its long-term commitment to the country despite political and logistical challenges.
Myanmar’s beer market has seen dramatic changes since the military takeover, which triggered a boycott of domestic

Sweden: Sweden to allow microbreweries to sell beer to visitors, but after a ‘lecture’
|
Sweden will allow its microbreweries, vineyards and distilleries to sell their drinks on-site to visitors, in a relaxation of strict rules on alcohol sales that aim to protect public health and which have been in place since 1955, Reuters reported on April 23.
But visitors must be on a paid tour and must listen to what the law described as a lecture "with real content" about the drink first, as well as facts about the negative effects of alcohol consumption.
Under current rules, shops in the Nordic country can only sell drinks with up to 3.5 percent alcohol. For stronger drinks, consumers must head to Systembolaget, the state-run alcohol chain which operates 450 outlets across Sweden. The stores have limited opening hours, don't advertise alcohol or discount drinks.
The government's so-called "farm sale" law for alcoholic beverages of all strengths takes effect in June and runs for six years before a mandatory evaluation. The law states visitors must have paid, can buy only small "souvenir-style" amounts and have to listen to "a lecture" with an educational element.
The change is controversial and seen by politicians on the left as a first step in dismantling the state's decades-old monopoly on alcohol sales. Sweden was given
