USA: US craft brewers adapting to new normal, Brewers Association says
|
The Brewers Association, the trade association representing America’s small and independent breweries, delivered its annual state of the industry address on April 30.
The address was given by Bart Watson, in his new role as the Association’s president and CEO, a position he has held since January 6, 2025, though he has given the address in recent years as the Association’s chief economist. Watson’s strong economic background and data-driven analysis is annually one of the highlights for attendees of the Craft Brewers Conference, being held this year in Indianapolis, Indiana.
In his address, Watson reiterated the Association’s previous report that craft breweries in America produced 4.0% less beer in 2024 than in 2023 and for the first time since 2005, the Association recorded more breweries closing—524—than opening—430.
Despite this, 43% of breweries increased production volume in 2024, indicating that difficulties were not universal and that it is possible to thrive in the current climate. Watson noted that breweries making non-beer beverages—hard seltzer, ready-to-drink cocktails, flavored malt beverages or cider, for example—were more likely to have shown growth.

Georgia: Beer market expected to maintain robust growth in 2025
|
Beer consumption in Georgia is increasing year by year. The market has grown by about 15% over the past three years, Commerstant.ge reported on April 28.
The highest growth in demand for the beverage was recorded in 2022. Corporate Affairs Director of Efes Georgia attributes this to the influx of migrants into Georgia. Nikoloz Khundzakishvili believes that the market will maintain robust growth in 2025 to 2%.
"The beer market grew by about 1-1.5% last year compared to the previous year," he said.
“Similar growth was seen in 2023. In 2022, we experienced extraordinary growth by about 11% that was caused by migration, afterwards in 2023 and 2024, the so-called natural growth was recorded. When the economy grows, the demand for these types of goods also increases.”
“Over the past three years, beer consumption has grown by about 15% that is a very good indicator given the current economic situation, purchasing power and the situation in the country as a whole. In our view, demand is expected to increase by 1.5-2% in 2025. This is a normal process when economy grows," Nikoloz Khundzakishvili points out.

USA, TX: Thirsty Planet Brewery getting ready to open in downtown San Marcos
|
Thirsty Planet Brewery will open in the former Aqua Brew spot in downtown San Marcos, Community Impact reported on April 28.
Founded by Brian Smittle in 2010, the brewery was previously located on South Congress Avenue in Austin. That location closed shortly after it opened in 2023. Since then, Thirsty Planet has been brewing some of its beers at Austin Beerworks and offering them in local bars and grocery stores.
Thirsty Planet’s beers include Thirsty Goat Amber, Buckethead IPA, Yellow Armadillo Wheat and Fat Bat Hazy IPA. The new location will be the brewery’s production facility and tasting room.
The space will also feature an outdoor beer garden, kid- and pet-friendly areas, TVs and speakers. They are also looking to partner with local restaurants for food options.

USA, MA: Boston Beer expects $20-30 mln extra costs due to tariffs this year
|
Boston Beer Co., the maker of Samuel Adams beer, Truly hard seltzer and other drinks, says the extra costs due to tariffs this year will be between $20 million and $30 million, MassLive reported on April 29.
The big driver of those costs is the aluminum Boston Beer Co. uses for its cans.
“In terms of tariffs, we’re still identifying what is actual policy and what is posturing and what looks like a long negotiation,” said CEO Michael Spillane on an earnings call last week. “So we’re being very thoughtful and very focused internally on, if we need solutions, we have them ready. We’re assessing the marketplace to see what kind of pricing tolerance there would be and we’re constantly looking at findings internally.”
The challenges with potential tariffs come on top of negative market trends in beer and other alcoholic beverages. Hard seltzer sales were down 5% for the first quarter of 2025, and beer sales were weaker than expected.
Chairman Jim Koch called today’s slow decline in beer consumption “the new normal” amid consumers’ health considerations and competing markets such as cannabis.

Romania: Craft brewer Ground Zero reports 25% increase in first-quarter sales
|
Ground Zero, one of Romania’s leading craft breweries, reported a 25% year-on-year increase in sales for the first quarter of 2025, marking its tenth anniversary against a backdrop of market stabilization and rising interest in premium products, Business Review reported on April 29.
Founded in 2015, Ground Zero introduced the India Pale Ale (IPA) style to Romania, helping to spur the growth of Romania’s craft beer market by attracting a community of enthusiasts and supporting the emergence of other independent brands.
“In 2015, Ground Zero brewed the first IPA made in Romania, paving the way for authentic craft beer in the local market. Since then, we have remained committed to brewing without enzymes, additives, or industrial shortcuts, adhering strictly to natural fermentation processes using real malt, real hops, pure water, and yeast,” said Cosmin Timbuș, shareholder at Ground Zero.
Following a decline in Romania’s total beer market in 2023, 2024 has seen volume stabilization while the craft segment continued to gain ground among urban consumers. Although craft beer still accounts for a modest share of overall consumption, the trend toward refined tastes and premium products points to the segment’s growth potential.

According to the state agency FranceAgriMer, as of April 21, the condition of wheat and barley crops was better than last year, UkrAgroConsult reported on April 25.
The share of winter soft wheat crops in good and very good condition is 74%, which is more than on the same date last year (63%), but less than in 2021-2023.
76% of winter durum wheat crops are now in good and very good condition (67% a year earlier), 70% (66%) of winter barley crops and 845 (73%) of spring barley crops.
