Brewery news USA: Craft beer sales continued to contract in April
Flavored malt beverages and seltzers are on the comeback, while craft beer continued to contract according to the April 2025 Beer Purchasers’ Index (BPI) from The National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA), Craft Brewing Business reported on May 1.

The BPI is the only forward-looking indicator for distributors to measure expected beer demand. The index surveys beer distributors’ purchases across different segments and compares them to previous years. A reading greater than 50 indicates the segment is expanding, while a reading below 50 indicates the segment is contracting.

The April Beer Purchasers’ Index recorded a year-over-year decrease to 38 while the at-risk inventory measure rose to 54. The combination of these index readings continues to place the industry in contractionary territory.

The FMB/seltzer reading for April 2025 at 43 is three-points higher than the April 2024 reading at 40. The FMB segment is the only segment to post a higher reading in April 2025 compared to April 2024. This is 14th consecutive month of YoY improvement — the segment’s first such streak since 2019/2020.

The Imports segment returned to expansionary territory following its first month in contraction since 2020, with an April 2025 reading of 51. Still: that is 22 points below last April’s reading ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Japanese beer imports enjoying sharp recovery
As the imported beer market is contracting, only Japanese beer continues to show growth. Since the 'No Japan' (boycott of Japanese products) movement quieted down in 2019, consumer perceptions have changed, and Japanese beers have gained popularity through travel and social media, leading to evaluations that they are regaining their former prominence domestically, ChosunBiz reported on May 1.

Analysis of import and export trade data by ChosunBiz revealed that the import value of Japanese beer collapsed after reaching $73.8 million (184.9 billion won) in 2018, but is showing a sharp recovery. Due to the effects of the No Japan movement, the import value dropped to $39.76 million (56.5 billion won) in 2019 and $5.67 million (8.1 billion won) in 2020. It rebounded to $6.88 million (9.8 billion won) in 2021, followed by $14.48 million (20.6 billion won) in 2022, $55.52 million (78.9 billion won) in 2023, and is projected to reach $67.45 million (95.9 billion won) in 2024, marking an increase in import value for four consecutive years.

Japan reclaimed its position as the top beer exporter to Korea in 2023, five years after losing it. It maintained this position last year as well. Last year, the import value of beer ranked ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Asahi invests in new canning system at Queensland brewery
Asahi Beverages has unveiled a new canning system at its brewery in Queensland as consumer demand grows for cans over stubbies, The Shout reported on May 2.

The $60m production line will be capable of rolling out more than two million cans every 24 hours, including brands like Great Northern, Victoria Bitter and Carlton Dry.

With the capacity to produce 400 million cans a year, the new line significantly boosts the canning capacity at the Yatala facility between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, which is Australia’s largest brewery.

Having created more than 200 jobs during its construction, and 28 full-time jobs on-site, Head of Manufacturing at Yatala, Melanie Hignett, said the new line underscores Asahi’s long-term commitment to Australian jobs and manufacturing.

“This new canning line is a major investment in south-east Queensland manufacturing. It’s a big win for beer lovers too because it helps ensure we can meet growing demand for beer cans in Queensland and beyond for many years to come.

“Aussie beer lovers’ increasing thirst for cans over stubbies is creating more great brewery jobs for Queenslanders and some useful sustainability benefits too,” Hignett stated.

Five years ago, just 46 per cent of the packaged beer Asahi brewed in Australia was sold in ...More info on site
