Barley news Canada: Feed barley prices holding relatively firm
Feed barley prices in Western Canada were holding relatively firm in mid-May, although seasonal price trends in the feed market typically see values start to come down in mid-June as the new crop harvest approaches, Grainews reported on May 22.

Feed barley into Lethbridge, Alta., was priced at C$314 to C$320 per tonne as of May 16 according to the Alberta government’s weekly market review. That was steady on the week.

Meanwhile, delivered corn prices dipped by about C$2 per tonne, coming in at roughly C$311 per tonne into Lethbridge.

Canadian imports of corn from the United States remain well off what was coming north a year ago, with only 140,800 tonnes imported as of May 15 during the marketing year that began at the start of September, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data. That compares with 925,500 tonnes at the same point a year ago. In addition, there are only 77,800 tonnes of outstanding U.S. corn sales to Canada, below the 129,600 tonnes on the books at the same time a year ago.

Meanwhile, Canadian barley exports are running in line with the year-ago pace, with 1.68 million tonnes exported as of May 11, according to weekly Canadian Grain Commission data.

Brewery news USA, MI: Leigh’s Brewing Co. already serving Holland Township
After announcing plans last year to open in the former Hopland Brewstillery, the long-awaited Leigh’s Brewing Co. is now serving Holland Township, MLive.com reported on May 23.

The family enterprise at 977 Butternut Drive, Suite 4, is run by Jessica Ringling, her sister Laurel and their parents Lee and Mary. The name of the business comes from the sisters’ shared middle name Leigh.

Leigh’s Brewing hosted a soft opening May 14 with an “amazing turnout,” Jessica Ringling said. The brewery opened with a small list of five beers on tap but is adding new ones every week.

“We really appreciate the community for coming out, giving their support and giving their opinions,” she said.

The brewstillery also serves cocktails and a limited menu of in-house spirits, including vodka, rum and agave spirit made with 100% blue agave.

In the place of an in-house food menu, Leigh’s Brewing is partnering with its neighbor restaurants. Fusion Thai, right next door, has a menu of specials just for Leigh’s Brewing. Patrons are welcome to bring in their own food from other nearby restaurants such as Peppino’s Pizza.

There’s more yet to come at Leigh’s Brewing, including a wine list and daily events, starting with trivia night planned for Wednesday, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Danville Brewing Company planning to build its second location in East Pleasanton
An upcoming microbrewery and biergarten might bring a new sense of vibrancy to East Pleasanton with its scheduled opening next year, Independent News reported on May 22.

The Danville Brewing Company plans to build its second location on the vacant lot at 3595 Utah Street, adjacent to the Surf Thru Express Car Wash, expanding its offerings of IPAs, lagers, stouts and other brews into Pleasanton.

The Pleasanton Planning Commission on May 14 unanimously approved the project, which is set to include an 8,600-square-foot microbrewery and brew pub, a 1,850-square-foot biergarten and a 45-space parking lot. Designs submitted to the city show a contemporary, industrial-styled building with high ceilings and open interiors surrounded by numerous trees shading outdoor seating areas and shuffleboard courts. The project also allows for two food-truck locations, complete with electrical, water and sanitary connections.

The Maita family, which traces its beer-brewing heritage back to shortly after prohibition, opened the original Danville Brewing in Danville in 2016. Its craft beers have since won regional, national and world-level medals.

Owner Marcus Maita said at last week’s meeting that the family now looks to meet the growing interest in its beers with the new Pleasanton location.

“The main thing is, yeah, we want to expand ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Pioneer Valley Brewing to pour its last pints on May 31
A local brewery in northwestern Massachusetts is closing its doors at the end of the month, Men’s Journal reported on May 23.

Pioneer Valley Brewing in Turners Falls will pour its final pints on Saturday, May 31, owners Stephen Valeski and Chris Fontaine told the Greenfield Recorder.

The pair, who have opted not to renew their lease, cited financial issues as the impetus for the closure. Pioneer Valley originally opened in December 2020.

“Expenses have gone through the roof. The last two years have been devastating,” Valeski said. “Prices went up. Everything’s gone up. It’s the market, it’s the economy. People aren’t going out as much. Everything’s more expensive, you know? Shipping’s more expensive. Cans are more expensive. Everything is more expensive. We just can’t keep charging more and more and more for a glass of beer. [It] gets to a certain point where people are going to say, ‘No.’

In recent weeks, the taproom/brewery, which also hosts live music, has been teasing its final night on social media.

"Every epic saga has its grand finale, but who says we have to tiptoe out?" one post reads. "Let's crank up the fun with two sensational bands! This final bash at PVB is one ...More info on site

Brewery news Vietnam: AB InBev doubles production capacity of its brewery in southern province of Binh Duong
The capacity of Belgian firm AB InBev’s brewery in the southern province of Binh Duong has doubled to 100 million litres per year after 10 years of operations, The Investor reported on May 22.

Craig Maclean, managing director of AB InBev Southeast Asia, cited the figure while speaking at the company's 10-year anniversary ceremony in Binh Duong on Wednesday.

Vietnam is one of the top 10 beer-consuming markets in the world. For Vietnamese people, beer is not just a beverage - it's a part of social culture and connection. This is a key factor driving the firm's continued investment in Vietnam, he said.

Located in the VSIP II Binh Duong Industrial Park, the brewery was AB InBev's first facility established in Southeast Asia.

It is one of the 55 most advanced Budweiser breweries globally, with products sold in the Vietnamese market and seven other Southeast Asian countries.

With a total investment of $238 million, the Binh Duong brewery is equipped with AB InBev’s most advanced automated production lines. All steps, from brewing, fermentation, filtration, and cooling to bottling, canning, and packaging, see minimal manual work.

A standout feature is its Siemens Braumat system - an industry-specific process control platform that meticulously monitors each stage of fermentation, ...More info on site

The profit of Cervejas de Mozambique (CDM) almost tripled in 2024 to 1.706 billion meticais (€24 million), according to the report and accounts of the company, which produces the main Mozambican beer brands, Club of Mozambique reported on May 22.

According to the report, sales gave CDM a gross profit of 8.35 billion meticais (€117.8 million) in 2024, compared to 8.15 million meticais (€115 million) the previous year.

In 2023, CDM had recorded a net profit of 577 million meticais (€8.1 million), according to data from the company’s report and accounts. The company decided to pay dividends to shareholders of 3.28 meticais (€0.04) per share, more than double the previous year.

Considered one of the largest companies in the country, CDM was established on 1 August 1995, following the privatisation of the MacMahon and Manica breweries, in Maputo and Beira, respectively. Barley news Ukraine: Barley harvest expected to drop significantly this year
A significant decrease in the total barley harvest is expected in the new season in Ukraine, against the backdrop of reduced planting areas and the impact of weather risks. This forecast was announced by analysts of the agricultural cooperative PUSK, created under the Ukrainian Agrarian Council, as reported by the press service of the UAC.

"This year, we expect a barley harvest of about 5.1–5.3 million tonnes, which is 40% lower than pre-war levels. This means a significant reduction in supply right at the start of the season, and the market is gradually beginning to factor this into prices," the experts noted.

At the same time, they added, the demand for Ukrainian barley is growing, especially from China, which is returning to the market, and from Southern European countries. This creates conditions for stabilizing and even increasing export activity.

"China has already contracted about 500,000 tonnes of Ukrainian barley for July-August, and European importers, particularly Spain and Italy, are also ramping up purchases. Traders are eager to secure volumes in advance, considering the limited prospects for domestic production," said PUSK.

Analysts also see potential for price increases in the second half of the year, especially if weather risks materialize and the harvest turns out ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: Beer Association of South Africa responds to above-inflation excise increase on beer in new budget
The Beer Association of South Africa (BASA) acknowledges the 2025 Budget Speech delivered during the Budget 3.0 update. However, the association is deeply concerned by the decision to proceed with an above-inflation excise increase on beer—unchanged from the initial proposal despite repeated calls for review, Cape Business News reported on May 23.

This marks the third missed opportunity by National Treasury to reconsider a policy that is increasingly out of step with the economic realities facing the sector. Beer producers continue to face escalating input costs, weakening consumer demand, and strained infrastructure. An aggressive and unpredictable excise regime only adds further pressure—undermining investment, job creation, and economic growth, the association said.

The increase also accelerates the shift toward illicit alcohol trade, which now accounts for an estimated 22% of total alcohol consumption in South Africa, costing the fiscus over R11.3 billion in lost revenue. While the brewers note the Minister’s commitment to bolstering SARS’ capacity to combat illicit trade, effective enforcement must be matched with sensible tax policy that does not unintentionally drive consumers toward illegal markets.

BASA calls on National Treasury to:

• Commit to tax certainty by aligning annual excise increases with projected inflation, consistent with global best practice. • Protect the legal alcohol sector ...More info on site

Brewery news The Netherlands: Heineken loses legal case against supermarket chain Jumbo
Heineken has lost its legal case against Netherlands supermarket chain Jumbo, Yahoo!Finance reported on May 23.

The Amstel brewer had taken the retailer to court over it halting orders of a clutch of Heineken brands.

A spokesperson for Jumbo at the time, which is part of global buying group Everest, told Just Drinks: “Everest and its partners decided to temporarily purchase fewer Heineken products as they find the procurement prices Heineken is asking [to be] too high."

Heineken then said Jumbo had paused orders of “a large part of our product range”.

“Jumbo has disregarded multiple requests from Heineken Netherlands to resume orders as usual and honour our agreements,” the Amstel brewer added.

In the court's ruling yesterday (22 May), the judge concluded Heineken did not have "sufficient grounds to grant its claims in these summary proceedings", as the brewer's long-term agreement with the retailer came to an end on 31 January last year, after Jumbo joined the buying alliance Everest.

Jumbo signed up to the Everest and Epic Partners buying alliances in 2023. Everest includes Germany’s retail chain Edeka, Netherlands-based Picnic and French retail cooperative Système U.

The court filing noted: "Given the foregoing, it is not plausible that the long-term agreement between Heineken Netherlands and ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Demand for no alcohol beers and ciders up 32% in Q1 2025, pub company Stonegate Group says
New analysis of sales data from Stonegate Group, the UK’s biggest pub company, has revealed an increase in demand for low and no alcohol beers and ciders with sales up by 32% in the first quarter of 2025, compared to the same period last year. In total 271,000 low and alcohol-free beers and ciders have been sold across Stonegate’s pub and bar estate in the first few months in 2025 alone.

Furthermore, data from Stonegate’s MiXR app has revealed that low and no alcohol drinks are in most demand from 25-34 year olds – accounting for 21% of sales, compared to 12% of total draught. By comparison, young adults aged 18-24 only account for 14% of low and no alcohol beer sales, yet account for 24% of total draught beer sales. Stonegate’s research has also found that demand for low and no alcohol sales peaks on Saturdays, with nearly a quarter of sales taking place in late afternoon and early evening, between 5pm and 7pm.

Guinness 0% tops the list of best performing low alcohol beers, closely followed by Heineken 0.0%. Heineken recently marked its 1,000th 0.0% tap in the UK, with the historic 1,000th tap installed Stonegate’s Clerk & Well ...More info on site
