Brewery news China: Demand for Heineken in China growing thanks to partnership with China Resources Beer
Western consumer brands in China have long been coming to terms with the prospect of lower growth in the world’s second-largest economy. But demand for Heineken’s beers tells a different story, Financial Times reported on May 24.

In 2023, sales volumes for the Dutch lager maker’s various brands, including Amstel, rose more than 50 per cent. Last year, as the overall mainland China beer market shrank, its volumes increased nearly 20 per cent to just under 700mn litres — almost enough to serve a pint to everyone in the country.

Heineken’s growth comes after a deal agreed in 2018 with China Resources Beer, China’s biggest brewer, which gave the state-owned group rights to the brand on the mainland while Heineken took a stake in China Resources Beer and gets royalties from the deal.

The approach points to pockets of opportunity for well-known foreign names in China’s fast-evolving consumer sector, even if the wider markets in which they operate are saturated.

“This is a very healthy transactional relationship,” said Tristan van Strien, global investor relations director at Heineken of the relationship with China Resources Beer. “They need us and we need them.”

Heineken’s growth rates “have undoubtedly outperformed”, said Euan McLeish, an analyst at Bernstein. “None ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: 43 breweries become insolvent in the year to February 2025
A total of 43 UK breweries became insolvent in the year to the end of February 2025, according to accountancy group UHY Hacker Young, The Caterer reported on May 27.

Names including Fourpure, Magic Rock Brewery (both brands were subsequently acquired by Keystone Brewing Group), By the Horns, Burton Town Brewery and Wild Weather Ales were amongst those in financial difficulty.

Fourpure and Magic Rock were later acquired by Keystone Brewing Group.

Many of the closures were due to the mounting cost pressures facing small, independent craft beer producers, the report said.

Brian Johnson, partner at UHY Hacker Young, said: “The craft beer boom was one of the most exciting recent trends in food and drink. Unfortunately, it is a sector that attracted too many entrepreneurs who struggled to break even.

“The recent closures suggest the UK’s craft beer market cannot continue to support all the independent producers that have sprung up in the last 15 years.”

Johnson said weak consumer spending meant many breweries would have to adapt to leaner times and small brewers were caught in a “perfect storm” of soaring production costs while household spending remained tight.

Recent increases in the National Minimum Wage and employer National Insurance contributions have also pushed up ...More info on site

Brewery news Georgia: Beer consumption on the rise with imports getting more interest from the population
The key sales markets, FMCG and the HORECA industry, are expected to maintain sustainable growth in Georgia in the coming years, Commersant Georgia reported on May 23.

While domestically produced beer has remained mostly unchanged in 2024 in absolute terms, price changes have significantly boosted the market revenue, a TBC Capital report is quoted as saying. Domestic beer consumption has been on a rise for the last several years, reaching a new high in 2024. Boosted demand on imported beer is also visible in the annual numbers.

The increased domestic demand, especially for imported beer, is translated into significant growth of imports and reduced exports.

With import levels remaining mostly unchanged throughout the last several years, domestic demand for non-alcoholic beverages is mostly met with local production.

Export of non-alcoholic beverages has significantly increased in the past five years, exhibiting a 30% 4-year CAGR and reaching 150 mln litres in 2024.

Brewery news Germany: Brewery workers strike in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia region
Employees are walking out at several breweries in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia region this week in a spat over wages, Yahoo!Finance reported on May 27.

Workers took part in a "warning strike" on May 26 at Krombacher's brewery in Kreuztal.

Around 150 Krombacher employees downed their tools for a two-hour period, Isabell Mura, deputy regional chairwoman of the North Rhine-Westphalia branch of the Food, Beverages and Catering Union (NGG), said.

A "warning strike" acts as a "warning signal" to employers, Mura said.

Demonstrations were also taking place on May 27 at the Veltins brewery in Meschede, Hochsauerland, at the Dortmunder Actien Brauerei (DAB) in Dortmund, and Diebels brewery in Issum.

"A lot of trouble has been brewing in North Rhine-Westphalia's breweries – especially at Krombacher in Kreuztal. Employers are putting the brakes on wages. This is provoking a 'knot in the beer pipeline' – namely, a whole series of warning strikes in many North Rhine-Westphalian breweries," Mura said in a statement.

She added that the move across these German breweries could hit production.

"Summer thirst could also suffer: Reduced beer production would also make barbecues and summer festivals drier," Mura said.

The NGG union has called on brewery employers to give all staff a 6.6% wage increase this year.

Brewery news Asia Pacific: AB InBev cuts 16% of Budweiser workforce in Asia Pacific last year
AB InBev has confirmed that it cut 16% of its Budweiser workforce within the Asia-Pacific region last year, The Drinks Business reported on May 27.

According to company’s 2024 annual report, the APAC arm of the business employed just over 21,000 people by year-end, a figure that was down from approximately 25,000 in 2023.

The findings show a reduction of nearly 4,000 employees, or roughly 16% of those working for Budweiser APAC, according to reports via Vino Joy.

Despite market rumours suggesting that Budweiser APAC had planned to slash operating costs by 15% in 2025, a move that would include thousands of layoffs, the company denied such actions and instead cited a response from headquarters stating that the claims of large-scale job cuts were not accurate, and that it remains committed to long-term investment in China.

Irrespective of these recent job cuts, Budweiser APAC still bills itself as the largest beer company in the region. Plus, in China the beer company manages both local and international brands including: Harbin, Budweiser, Hoegaarden, and Corona, with all distribution and channel operations said to be handled by Budweiser APAC.

Despite denying plans for further layoffs in 2025, it is clear that the 2024 staff reductions have already taken ...More info on site
