USA: Wholesale beer purchasing improved in May for all segments except craft
|
The US have been tracking a dismal year in retail alcohol sales thus far in 2025. But as we enter summer selling season, the outlook for wholesale beer purchasing is improving for all segments — except craft — according to the National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA) Beer Purchasers’ Index (BPI) for May 2025.
The steadiest improvement can be seen in the flavored malt beverages (FMB) / seltzer category.
“The Beer Purchasers’ Index (45) and At-Risk Inventory (47) measures show sequential improvement over the preceding three months,” according the NBWA.
BPI is the only forward-looking indicator for distributors to measure expected beer demand. The index surveys beer distributors’ purchases across different segments and compares them to previous years. A reading greater than 50 indicates the segment is expanding, while a reading below 50 indicates the segment is contracting.
“The At-Risk Inventory measure dropped below the 50 benchmark for the first time since January. This combination of readings moves the industry from contractionary territory to a more cautionary state.”

Singapore: ThaiBev launches $2 bln debt issuance programme
|
Thai Beverage (ThaiBev) has established a US$2 billion ($2.57 billion) multicurrency debt issuance programme on June 4, The Edge Singapore reported.
The food and beverage (F&B) group will issue notes and perpetual securities denominated in any currency agreed upon between the group and relevant dealers under the programme.
The securities will be offered in Singapore under exemptions invoked under Sections 274 and 275 of the Securities and Futures Act 2001. Section 274 states that the exemptions refer to an offer of securities or securities-based derivatives contracts made to an institutional investor. Under Section 275, exemptions are made if the offer is not accompanied by an advertisement, does not have selling or promotional expenses paid or incurred and does not have a registered prospectus.
DBS has been appointed to act as the group’s sole arranger and dealer of the programme.
ThaiBev will be holding its 2025 annual information meeting for shareholders in Singapore on June 20.
Shares in ThaiBev closed 0.5 cents higher or 1.09% up at 46.5 cents on June 4.

|
U.S. craft breweries face growing financial strain as steel, aluminum, barley, and malt tariffs intensify. According to a new report from GlobalData, these trade barriers are inflating costs across the industry — from raw materials to essential brewing equipment. These added pressures come at a time when the industry is already struggling, Craft Brewing Business reported on June 2.
For the second consecutive year, more U.S. craft breweries closed than opened, according to the Brewers Association. With operating costs rising and consumer demand plateauing, especially among younger drinkers, many small brewers find themselves at a breaking point.
William Gould, Consumer Analyst at GlobalData, said: “The US craft beer industry is at a critical juncture, facing the dual challenges of rising production costs due to tariffs and shifting consumer preferences towards product origin. The historical growth of the craft beer sector has been remarkable, but the current landscape necessitates strategic adaptations to navigate these challenges effectively. Brands must be proactive in understanding the implications of political and economic changes while also aligning their messaging with evolving consumer values.”

India: United Breweries to shut its Mangaluru brewery
|
United Breweries Ltd. will shut its brewery unit situated in Karnataka's coastal town of Mangaluru by the end of June, the company announced on June 2.
"The closure of the Mangalore Brewery will not impact our business performance in the state," a stock exchange filing said.
The company is taking all necessary and responsible steps to support employees and workmen through this transition, the statement said.
Besides, UBL has initiated a strategic capacity consolidation and is pursuing expansion at its Nanjangud Brewery in Mysuru. It is making significant investments to scale up the supply chain efficiencies.
"This expansion will play a pivotal role in meeting the future demand efficiently and sustainably through enhanced operations within the State of Karnataka," UBL said.
During a post-earnings conference call last month, company executives noted a "rocky start to the year" in Karnataka because of the excise changes that had a big impact in sales.
UBL operates three breweries in the state, with one in Bengaluru.
United Breweries reported positive year-over-year growth in profit in the fourth quarter of the financial year 2024-25, even as it missed projections. For the whole year, the bottom bottom line rose nearly 8%.

South Africa: Excessive beer taxation driving illicit alcohol trade, BASA says
|
Excessively high beer taxation levels are driving consumers to support the illicit alcohol industry, a situation that needs to be rectified by lowering beer excise taxes as soon as possible, Beer Association of South Africa (BASA) CEO Charlene Louw was quoted as saying by Engineering News on June 3.
“Beer is one of those beverages that is highly taxed through excise. It's struggling and it's a global concern. High taxes are eating away at the margins of manufacturers and it's opening up a market for illicit alcohol and delegitimising the industry in many respects,” she told delegates at the 2025 Africa Brewing Conference, in Johannesburg, on June 3.
“We have very stern conversations with Finance Minister [Enoch Godongwana]. We're trying to sustain this industry, because this is an industry that sustains many jobs in South Africa, which is one of those countries that has a significant unemployment rate. If you did away with this sector, that would have a huge impact on our economy,” she said.
Louw noted that a recent study found that about 38% of the price of a 330 ml bottle of beer went toward taxation. This figure included both value-added tax (VAT) and excise duties.

Belgium: Chimay to issue an exclusive limited edition Trappist beer to selebrate Scoumont Abbey’s 175th anniversary

The Chimay Brewery will celebrate the 175th anniversary of the Scourmont Abbey this year with an exclusive limited edition Trappist beer, the brewery announced in a statement on June 3, The Brussels Times reported.
The Chimay Brewery describes its new Chimay 175 beer as "a blonde beer, both lively and refined, brewed in the spirit of monastic tradition."
The Chimay 175 has an alcohol content of 6.5%. Like the brewery’s other beers, it will bear the Authentic Trappist Product label.
This label ensures the beer is brewed within the Trappist abbey, supervised by monks, and that the majority of profits are dedicated to social assistance.
Founded in 1850, the Scourmont Abbey is a Cistercian abbey located in the heart of Hainaut, Belgium.

South Korea: Small breweries are leaving Seoul
|
Small breweries in downtown Seoul, which have emerged as "hot people" and changed trends in domestic drinking culture, are leaving Seoul. This is because the recent decline in consumption of traditional liquor and craft beer, which are the main types of small breweries, has become clear, facing management difficulties. It is interpreted that moving to the provinces can reduce rents and even online sales of liquor is possible if a "local specialty owner's license" is obtained, Maeil Business Newspaper reported on June 3.
According to the National Tax Service on the 3rd, the number of stores with small liquor manufacturing licenses in Seoul last year was 87, down 6.5% from 2023. This is the first time that the number of small breweries in Seoul has decreased compared to the previous year since 2020, when related statistics were compiled. A small liquor manufacturing license is a license obtained by a small liquor store that produces and sells traditional liquor or craft beer as it can manufacture takju, spirits, rice wine, fruit wine and beer at a lower facility standard and cost than a general license.

France: Crop conditions further decline in week to May 26 but less sharply than before
|
French cereal crop conditions declined in the week to May 26 but less sharply than in the previous week, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on May 30, suggesting showers may have tempered drought in northern regions, Business Recorder reported.
For soft wheat, France’s most produced cereal, the office rated 70% of crops as good or excellent by May 26, down from 71% a week earlier and following a two-point drop in the preceding week. The rating was still above a score of 61% a year ago, when torrential rain led to the smallest French harvest since the 1980s.
In contrast to last year’s soggy conditions, a very dry spring has parched crop belts in the north of France and a swathe of northern Europe, raising doubts about the extent to which production will recover from the poor 2024 harvest.
But traders expect showers and cool temperatures in the past week to give crops some respite ahead of a hot spell at the end of this week. For spring barley, the good/excellent rating decreased by one point to 74% after a six-point drop the prior week.
