Mexico: Hop growing industry making slow progress in Mexico
|
Mexico is the world’s number one beer exporting country and No. 22 in overall beer consumption. But while beer has been produced here in commercial quantities since the 1800s, until 14 years ago, 100% of the hops used in Mexican beer were imported from abroad, at a price tag of more than US $34 million a year, Mexico News Daily reported on June 11.
While the idea of a 100% Mexican beer has been dreamt of before, it’s taken a long time for it to become a reality.

USA, IL: Emmett’s Brewing Co. quietly closes its doors for good
|
A Downers Grove restaurant and brewery quietly closed its doors on June 1, a move that came as a bit of a surprise to its staff and longtime loyal customers, the Daily Herald reported on June 12.
“After 21 years and over a million beers together ...” Emmett’s Brewing Co. announced on Facebook that it was closing its location in downtown Downers Grove immediately.
Among those saddened by the closure was Sayard Rucinski, who had her “first Downers Grove beer” at the dining establishment.
“It was kind of our bar the whole time it was open," said Rucinski of Downers Grove. "Five or six years in a row, we did New Year’s Eve there."
Rucinski said she and her husband, Alex, enjoyed the brewery’s 1 A.M. ale years ago while attending Heritage Fest.
The sudden closure was something of a “shock” to Sayard Rucinski.
“We have gone to beer dinners there and other events there over time,” she said. “We would have thought there would have been a heads up or a goodbye celebration.”
On June 1, the restaurant announced its closure on Facebook, thanking its customers for an “unforgettable run.”

USA, MO: Wellspent Brewing to shutter for good on June 29

On June 29, St. Louis beer lovers will raise a glass to Wellspent Brewing (2917 Olive) one last time, STLmag.com reported on June 12.
After seven years of pouring some of the city’s most nuanced, quietly spectacular beers, the Midtown taproom is closing its doors.
The decision to close was years in the making. “All of the growth plans required significant investment, and with sales off year over year, I couldn’t justify it,” says owner Eben Shantz. “I also wanted to commit more time to family and streamline the rest of my life—it’s messy enough as it is.”
Kyle Kohlmorgen opened Wellspent Brewing in 2018. The brewery quickly became known for its balanced, barrel-aged styles and low-ABV beers packed with flavor. It was located inside a historic Midtown space that once housed the Bonanza Theatre. Restored marquees and salvaged balcony pieces gave the space a sense of history, and the beer quickly earned a devoted following.
“I went to Wellspent all the time when it first opened,” Shantz recalls. “It became my happy place.”

Ethiopia: Kegna Beverages to open a 3 mln hl brewery in Ginchi
|
Kegna Beverages is making a USD 250 million investment in the beer market, officially opening a 3 million hl brewery in Ginchi, a town some 80 km west of Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa in Oromia Regional State. The lager with the brand name Kegna (meaning “our”) is brewed with local barley and will hit the market immediately, Brauwelt reported on June 13.
Incorporated in 2017 by some 5,000 shareholders, including farmers, the company is controlled by the Oromia state government and backed by the Development Bank of Ethiopia (DBE). Kegna’s management has set its sights on high-volume production to compete with established breweries, including Heineken, BGI (Castel) and a host of others.
At the heart of Kegna’s plan is a sprawling production site in Ginchi. The site is huge, covering about 100 ha, half of which is dedicated to the brewery, with the rest housing offices, warehouses, and guest accommodations. On June 11, His Majesty King Willem-Alexander inaugurated the Dr. H.P. Heineken Centre, HEINEKEN’s new 8,800 m² Global Research and Development Centre in Zoeterwoude, the Netherlands.
Located next to the brewery in Zoeterwoude, the €45 million Centre is a key part of HEINEKEN’s global R&D network and the company’s growth and innovation strategy.
Research at the Centre focuses on enhancing brewing techniques and developing legendary new beers and beverages that meet evolving consumer trends.

Japan: Kirin to revise prices for certain products in October

Kirin Beverage Company, Limited (Kirin Beverage) has said it would revise the prices for certain products delivered from Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
“In order to deliver safe and high quality products at reasonable prices, we have been working hard to improve productivity and reduce costs in all aspects of our business, and have been making efforts to improve our corporate management and rationalize our operations. However, we expect that the uncertain and difficult business environment will continue in the future, as prices of raw materials, containers and packaging materials, and related costs such as energy and logistics continue to soar. Under these circumstances, we have once again decided, out of necessity, to implement price revisions for some of our products,” the company said.
Kirin Beverage also added it will continue its efforts to improve management efficiency through continuous corporate efforts to deliver safe, high-quality products that will delight consumers.

Denmark: Carlsberg launches Denmark’s first beer brewed entirely from regeneratively grown barley malt
|
Carlsberg has launched Grobund, Denmark’s first beer brewed entirely from regeneratively grown barley malt, marking a major step in its sustainability drive, New Food Magazine reported on June 13.
The announcement coincides with the 2025 Danish political festival, Folkemødet (12-14 June), where the beer will debut, signalling the start of Carlsberg Denmark’s ambition to brew all its beer from regenerative grain by 2040.
Produced at Carlsberg’s Valby Bakke brewery, Grobund is a symbolic introduction to the company’s wider strategy to embed regenerative agriculture – a method focusing on soil health, biodiversity and minimal environmental impact – into its supply chain. The beer will be available on tap and in cans during the festival and also at the Home of Carlsberg in Copenhagen.
“Grobund will be the symbol of a much larger movement for Carlsberg. We are already testing the barley malt in the regular Carlsberg pilsner. The goal is that by 2040, we will brew exclusively with regenerative grain across the entire Carlsberg group,” said Peter Haahr Nielsen, Managing Director at Carlsberg Denmark.

UK: UK distilleries embrace rye as consumers seek new profiles
|
Some UK distilleries are starting to embrace rye as their consumers seek new profiles, Drinks International reported on June 12.
While whisky can be shaped by a variety of factors during its creation, from the techniques used to the barrels it’s aged in, some Scotch producers are taking things back to the beginning and concentrating on the grain it starts from.
In Islay, Bruichladdich has, for a long time, focused on barley for the production of its whiskies, typically using organic barley from Aberdeenshire and bere barley from the University of Highlands and Islands in Orkney. But recently the distillery has started dabbling with rye. Before getting into the rye itself and how that came about, it’s helpful to understand the role of barley at Bruichladdich.
Prior to its foray into rye, the distillery began growing its own barley on the island, which isn’t typically done due to the harsh climate and flocks of seagulls that enjoy eating the grain, hence the imports from mainland Scotland. However, depending on production level, the distillery has been able to incorporate about 50% of Islay barley across its whole range.

Thailand: Thailand’s Prakaan whisky being rolled out globally
|
Following its domestic launch in Asian markets last year, Prakaan whisky is being rolled out globally, marking Thailand’s first-ever single malt whisky, Drinks Retailing News reported on June 3.
As part of the Tribura Series release, Prakaan has debuted three expressions: Prakaan Select Cask, Prakaan Double Cask and Prakaan Peated Malt. All of the products share tropical fruit notes and vanilla sweetness.
Distributors International Beverage have said that this launch aims to put Thai whisky on the global spirits map, with an initial focus on the UK, France and Germany in 2025, with America to follow.
Prakaan whisky comes from the province of Kamphaeng Phet, which sits in Thailand’s northerly Western Forest Complex. Here, the spirit is matured in a mix of American oak ex-bourbon casks and Spanish oak ex-sherry casks.
The expansion of Thai whisky comes at the same time as world whisky rises in popularity.
