Hops news USA: Idaho hop farmers reduce acreage this year
According to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Idaho hop farmers strung 5,109 acres of hops this year, down from 5,797 acres last year, AgInfo reported on June 25.

Oregon looks to re-pass Idaho this year as the No. 2 hop state, at least as far as total acreage goes. NASS estimates Oregon farmers strung 5,421 acres of hops in 2025, down 4 percent from 5,635 last year.

Idaho passed Oregon in 2018 to become the No. 2 state in total hop acres.

However, when it comes to total hop production, Idaho has been the No. 2 state for even longer because of higher average hop yields per acre.

Idaho hop acres typically average 100-400 pounds per acre more than Oregon hop acres.

For example, hop acres in Idaho averaged 2,273 pounds per acre in 2024 compared with 1,732 in Oregon, according to NASS.

However, there have been years when the two states were close in hop yields. In 2022, yields averaged 1,733 pounds per acre in Idaho and 1,729 in Oregon.

So, whether Idaho will hang onto the No. 2 spot in total hop production this year will come down to agronomic conditions and how yields fare in both states.

Washington is the unchallenged leader nationally in hop ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Seven Bridges Grille & Brewery abruptly shuts its doors for good
One of Jacksonville's best-known craft breweries has abruptly shut its doors after 26 years, with its owners saying the business was no longer financially sustainable, The Florida Times-Union reported on June 24.

Lunchtime customers arrived June 24 to find Seven Bridges Grille & Brewery, at 9735 Gate Parkway N. in Tinseltown, empty except for a few employees doing inventory and other final details, including preparing to hang up a "closed" sign.

"It's due to a lack of business," Jonathan Blair, chief operating officer of the Kelly Companies of Southern California, a private equity company which owns Seven Bridges and multiple other restaurants, told the Times-Union.

"I feel bad for our team, but we couldn't turn it around," said Blair, adding the company is reaching out to other restaurants in an effort to help former Seven Bridges employees find new jobs.

"We haven't gotten that far," said Blair when asked about the possibility of Seven Bridges reopening, relocating, or changing concepts.

Dating back to January 1999, Seven Bridges was known for its multiple craft beers on tap as well as its food menu, including steaks, burgers, wings, sandwiches, pizza, and salads.

The closure comes five months after another longtime microbrewery, Ragtime Tavern, shut its doors, ending nearly ...More info on site

Barley news Spain: Spain expected to reduce grain imports due to abundant crop this year
According to the report of the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Ministry of Agriculture, in the 2025/26 marketing year, grain production in Spain will exceed 24.1 million tonnes, which will allow for a reduction in imports. This was facilitated by the expansion of sown areas, heavy rainfall, and mild weather that began in March and was favorable for winter crops, as reported by agronews.ua.

It is noted that the spring of 2025 was characterized by abundant rains in Spain from early March to the second half of May, which replenished soil moisture levels, improved water reserves, and ensured high yields on rainfed lands. Currently, the country’s reservoirs are filled to 76.8% of their total capacity, and stable irrigation water supply has allowed for the expansion of corn acreage to almost 130 thousand hectares.

According to forecasts, corn production in Spain this year may exceed 3.6 million tonnes, wheat – 8.5 million tonnes, barley – 9.5 million tonnes, oats – 1.3 million tonnes. However, FAS notes that prolonged spring rains forced farmers in some regions to switch to short-cycle barley varieties with lower yields. Due to waterlogging of the soil, farmers were unable to carry out timely cultivation and fertilizer application, ...More info on site

Brewery news Thailand & Singapore: Billionaire leaves ownership of Thai beermaker to five children
Thailand’s richest man Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi distributed stakes in holding firms which control about 66 per cent of Thai Beverage to his five children, though he stopped short of handing over full control of the drinks giant, the Business Times reported on June 24.

The scions of the octogenarian billionaire put into effect a shareholders’ agreement which will confer on their father “the authority to manage and make all decisions in respect of the business and assets” of the entity, according to filings to the Singapore exchange late on June 23.

That move means that a key question over who will ultimately take over Charoen’s sprawling business empire remains unanswered, as a succession plan gathers pace. The tycoon is worth an estimated US$10.9 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. A cornerstone of that is Thai Beverage, the maker of Chang beer, which also operates distilleries across Scotland.

The share transfer is part of a longer term shift in the holdings of the patriarch and his late wife Khunying Wanna Sirivadhanabhakdi as succession beckons. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Thapana Sirivadhanabhakdi, his elder son, is ThaiBev’s current chief executive officer. The restructuring means he will share the ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: Trappist brewery Chimay offers three of its beers in cans for the first time
In response to changing beer consumption habits, the renowned Trappist brewery Chimay is offering three of its beers in cans for the first time. This launch coincides with the 175th anniversary of the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Scourmont, where Chimay beer has been brewed since 1862, Belga News Agency reported on June 24.

The Chimay Dorée, Rouge and Triple - ranging in alcohol content from 4.8% to 8% - are now available in 33cl cans. The heavier Bleue and Verte varieties will remain bottled for the time being. “You don’t drink those in just a few gulps,” said CEO Pierre-Louis Dhaeyer.

The abbey has been developing the canned versions for over three years, and has already conducted initial market trials in the United States and Japan, where canned craft beer is far more common.

Although canned beer accounts for around a third of beer consumption in Belgium, this is the first time that a Belgian Trappist beer has been released in this format. Dhaeyer emphasises that the decision goes beyond marketing. Cans offer better protection from light exposure, thus preserving the beer’s quality.

Nevertheless, this also reflects the broader trend of declining beer consumption. Chimay’s production dropped from almost 190,000 hectolitres before the pandemic ...More info on site
