Slovakia: Malt from Trnava wins EU protected status
|
Slovakia has achieved a new milestone in its food and agricultural sector after Trnavský slad (Trnava malt) received Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status from the European Union, the press agency SITA reported on June 27.
The recognition places Slovakia at the forefront of the EU's malt industry, making it the only member state with two geographically protected malt products.
The registration process, initiated by the Trnava-based producer Lycos Malt, took over four years and involved cooperation with experts and the Slovak Industrial Property Office.
“It was a long and demanding process, but the result confirms the strong reputation of Trnavský slad,” said Juraj Krajčovič from Lycos Malt. “The high quality of our malt is based not only on the unique soil and climate conditions of the Trnava Plain but also on centuries of tradition and the dedication of local farmers and malt producers,” he added.
Trnavský slad is a light, Pilsner-type barley malt primarily used in beer production. It is made from certified two-row barley grown exclusively in the region around Trnava, which is known for its favourable soil and climate. The malt is characterised by its high starch content of up to 66 percent and extract yield, often exceeding 83 percent.

China: China Resources Beer CEO resigns
|
Hou Xiaohai has resigned as executive director and chairman of China Resources Beer to focus on “other personal engagements”, Yahoo! Finance reported on June 27.
Xiaohai will also step down as a member of three of the brewer's committees, the company said in a Hong Kong stock-exchange filing.
Xiaohai, who served as the company's CEO since 2016, assumed the role of chairman in April 2023.
Zhao Chunwu, an executive director and China Resources Beer’s president, will “temporarily” assume the chairman’s duties during the transition period.
China Resources Beer, which owns the Snow beer brand, is a subsidiary of state-owned China Resources (Holdings) Company Limited (CRH). It focuses on the manufacturing, sales, and distribution of alcoholic beverages.
In 2024, the company reported a consolidated turnover of 38.63bn yuan ($5.39bn), down 0.8% on a year earlier.
China Resources Beer makes the bulk of its revenue from brewing but the turnover of its beer division dipped 1% to 36.49bn yuan. Nevertheless, the company said its "sales volume and turnover performance outperformed some of the peers".
Turnover from baijiu grew 4% to 2.15bn yuan.
Excluding impairment losses, earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) rose by 2.9% to 6.34bn yuan.
Profit for the year stood at 4.76bn yuan, down from 5.21bn yuan in 2023.

Taiwan: Taiwan slaps anti-dumping duties on Chinese beer and hot-rolled steel
|
Taiwan’s Ministry of Finance said on June 26 that it would slap anti-dumping duties on Chinese-made beer and hot-rolled steel for four months from Thursday next week (July 3), claiming “substantial damage” to Taiwan’s industry, Taipei Times reported.
The finance ministry in a statement said that it and the Ministry of Economic Affairs “have preliminarily determined that there is dumping [of these products] and it has caused substantial damage to domestic industry.”
The finance ministry said that the duties would be imposed for four months to “prevent our industry from continuing to suffer damage during the investigation.”
The levies on Chinese-made beer would range from 13.13 percent to 64.14 percent, while for steel they would be either 16.9 percent or 20.15 percent, it said.
The finance ministry in March launched anti-dumping probes into Chinese-made beer and some steel products following complaints of unfair competition.
Taiwan has anti-dumping duties on 10 products, including eight from China, which is its largest trading partner, official data showed.
China was the biggest source of beer imports to Taiwan last year, with shipments topping US$125 million, Bloomberg News reported.
The nation was also looking at whether low prices of certain Chinese hot-rolled steel products resulting from “long-standing overcapacity” in manufacturing were harming

UK: Government rules out ban on alcohol advertising
|
UK’s government has ruled out a ban on alcohol advertising in upcoming plans to improve the health of the nation, Yahoo! Finance reported on June 26.
The Department of Health and Social Care said it is “exploring options for partial restrictions”.
Officials are finalising the 10-Year Health Plan, which is expected in the coming weeks.
A draft version of the document, seen by Sky News, implied a total or partial ban on adverts for alcohol has been considered.
However, a total ban has now been ruled out.
A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: “The 10-Year Health Plan will not include a ban on alcohol advertising.
“We are exploring options for partial restrictions to bring it closer in line with the advertising of unhealthy food.”
In 2024, the Government announced plans to ban TV adverts for junk food before 9pm from October, but this has since been delayed until the New Year.
Campaigners said a partial restriction on alcohol advertising is a “real opportunity to move alcohol out of the spotlight”.
A spokesperson for Portman Group, which represents the alcohol industry, said it is not in favour of “broad, sweeping measures that impact that moderate majority whilst ignoring the needs of those who drink at the most

Hungary: Production of hops and malting barley has a serious future in Hungary, Minister of Agriculture says
|
The production of hops and malting barley in Hungary has a serious future, as breweries operating in the country are able to purchase much larger quantities of these than at present – the Minister of Agriculture announced on June 26 in Kastélyosdombó, Somogy County, TradeMagazin reported.
István Nagy reminded the press conference organized by Heineken Hungária Zrt. (HH) and the Ecumenical Aid Organization (ÖS) at the professional open day on hop production that the cultivation of hemp in the southern Somogy settlement started five years ago with the cooperation of the two actors and the government.
The cooperation ensured work, livelihood, survival and development in Kastélyosdombó, starting from a bold idea, a “miracle” happened in the small settlement – the Minister said, emphasizing that the first five years will enter the history of Hungarian hop production as a new beginning.
He drew attention to the fact that the hop cultivation in Kastélyosdombó responded to needs, just as the ministry must continuously respond to changing climatic conditions, social and economic needs.
The daily work of the Ministry of Agriculture is also about finding where there is a suitable growing area or growing region for the cultivation of a given plant, labor, knowledge, economic needs, and

India: Suntory revives bid to buy India’s Imperial Blue whisky
|
Suntory has revived its bid to buy entry-level Indian whisky Imperial Blue after showing initial interest in the brand last year, the Economic Times has reported.
Suntory refused to confirm whether rumours of its renewed bid were true, telling db that the company does not comment on speculation as a matter of policy.
However, it did not deny the claims made by local media over its interest in Imperial Blue.
Rumours of Suntory’s renewed bid come just days after it was reported that Indian distiller Tilaknagar Industries, which has been the frontrunner in the race to purchase Imperial Blue, is suffering from funding woes.
Tilaknagar Industries is reportedly looking to raise US$500 million to acquire the brand from Pernod Ricard. The financing strategy is expected to involve a mix of debt and equity, with a larger portion coming from debt.
Suntory dropped out of the race to buy the Indian whisky last year after Pernod Ricard asked for US$1 billion for the brand. Since then, the French multinational is reported to have cut its asking price to US$600-$650m.
Imperial Blue, launched in 1997, is a blend of Indian grain spirits with imported Scotch malts. The whisky brand is currently the third largest in India, but its
