Vietnam: Carlsberg’s expansion plant in Vietnam scheduled to officially come into operation in September
|
The expansion of Carlsberg’s brewery in Hue city, central Vietnam, with an investment of over VND3.4 trillion ($129.66 million), has entered trial runs and is scheduled to officially come into operation in September, according to a Carlsberg Vietnam report.
The new production line will boost capacity from 410 million liters to 600 million liters per year. The expansion will make the Phu Bai Industrial Park-based plant Carlsberg’s largest in Asia and position it among the Danish brewer’s highest-output facilities worldwide.
Speaking at a working session with Hue authorities on Thursday, Carlsberg Vietnam said that H1/2025 remained challenging for the beer industry amid weak demand, shifting consumer trends, and mounting competitive pressure. Its total sales volume hit about 133 million liters, down year-on-year.
However, the company has maintained stable employment for more than 1,600 workers and contributed over VND1.5 trillion ($57.2 million) to the budget - a figure city officials called commendable given the broader context.
The brewer proposed that the city support to put the new production line into operation as scheduled, boost traditional product consumption, and crack down on unlicensed craft beer, counterfeits, and knockoffs.

USA, CA: Boston Beer to ‘phase out’ operations in Los Angeles
|
The Boston Beer Co is set to “phase out” its operations in Los Angeles, including the Truly LA taproom and Angel City Brewery.
In a statement on August 7, the Samuel Adams owner said it will “gradually slow down” Truly LA’s operations over the coming months, with the site moving to Friday and Saturday service only by year-end. The space will then be repurposed for overflow and rental use.
The Boston-headquartered company added it will work to reassign as many Truly LA employees as possible to Angel City, while seeking a buyer for the brand and location before its lease expires in April 2026.
Despite noting Angel City Brewery is “doing well”, Boston Beer said the brand “no longer lines up with our long-term growth strategy”.
Earlier this month, it was revealed that Boston Beer CEO Michael Spillane will step down from the role this month to focus on “important personal matters”.

Germany: Government mulls increasing drinking age for beer and wine to 18
|
The German coalition government has announced its intention to curb what it sees as a high level of alcohol consumption in the federal republic. Several proposals are being weighed up, including raising the drinking age for beer and wine to 18, IamExpat.de reported on August 8.
The German government is taking aim at alcohol consumption among those under the age of 18, and has promised “concrete measures” to bring it down, according to a report in the Rheinische Post.
Currently, although you need to be 18 to buy “hard liquor”, young people between the ages of 16 and 18 are allowed to buy and drink beer, wine and sparkling wine in public, unless they are visibly drunk, while young people between the ages of 14 and 16 are allowed to consume alcohol in public if they are accompanied by a legal guardian - what is known as “supervised drinking”.
All that could be about to change, however, with Federal Health Minister Nina Warken telling the Rheinische Post that she is in favour of banning supervised drinking. Christos Pantazis, a spokesperson for the SPD, also told the newspaper that the government was considering raising the legal drinking age for wine and beer.

Monaco & UK: Monte Carlo Beer enters UK distribution and production agreement with Molson Coors
|
Monaco's Monte Carlo Beer has entered a distribution and production agreement in the UK with Molson Coors Beverage Company, Yahoo! Finance reported on August 7.
The partnership sees Molson Coors launch a new 4.8% abv lager for Monte Carlo Beer. Brewing of the product takes place at the Blue Moon brand owner's Burton and Tadcaster breweries.
It is being sold on draught in "select UK venues", the brewing major said. It launched onto the market at the end of July.
Molson Coors confirmed to Just Drinks that it has also bought Monte Carlo Beer’s “trademark portfolio” for the UK market as part of the agreement.
William Scheffer and Anthony Orengo, co-founders of Monte Carlo Beer, are still the owners of the Monégasque-based company, the Miller Lite brewer said.
Commenting on the news, Orengo said: “Molson Coors has a proven track record when it comes to working with partners across Europe to bring new innovations to the UK market.
"They’ve had huge success with brands such as Rekorderlig, Madri Excepcional and Staropramen. So, working with them to create this special addition to the portfolio was an opportunity we simply couldn’t pass up.”
Founded in 2019, Monte Carlo Beer Monaco is distributed mostly in Monaco and the French Riviera.

UK: UK drinkers believe multinationals are making it hard for small brewers
|
A new YouGov poll shows two-thirds of the UK public believe multinational brewers are making it harder for small, independent breweries to survive — echoing calls for urgent market reform, The Drinks Business reported on August 8.
Sixty-eight percent of UK adults think large brewers are limiting the survival chances of independent breweries, according to new polling from YouGov.
The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) says the findings show public concern that market dominance is reducing consumer choice and putting local beer production at risk. The group has renewed calls for fairer access to pubs and greater transparency in the supply chain.
Pubs tied to large chains and brewing companies often cannot stock beers from outside a pre-approved list, restricting opportunities for smaller producers.
CAMRA chairman Ash Corbett-Collins said: “These results are a wake-up call for politicians and regulators to tackle anti-competitive practices and give a level playing field to independent brewers.
“We’ve been banging on for ages about how global brewing conglomerates are locking out competition and stifling consumer choice. Now the public are backing that message loud and clear. People want to drink quality, independent beer in their local pubs, but many small brewers can’t get their foot in the door.

UK: Winter barley harvest completed, early spring barley yields encouraging
|
AHDB's third harvest 2025 report, published on August 8, shows yields improving as harvest continues - particularly for winter wheat - despite stop-start progress over the last couple of weeks, caused by short spells of often heavy rain.
The winter barley harvest in the UK is now complete, with the final hectares cut this week. Yield is one per cent down on the five-year average.
The spring barley harvest is 19 per cent complete. Early yields are encouraging; up 21 per cent on the five-year average. However, more data is needed to draw precise conclusions, as the areas harvested are mostly in eastern and southern regions, so not representative of the UK.

Ireland: Irish whiskey makers close and cut production under Trump’s trade tariffs
|
A clutch of independent distilleries in Ireland have closed or cut production in recent months, with giants like Diageo Plc and Pernod Ricard SA also impacted, The Hindu BusinessLine reported on August 8.
When the Killarney Brewing & Distilling Co. expanded in 2022, it boasted of being Ireland’s largest independently owned beer and whiskey producer, replete with visitor center. Last month, it closed down, the latest casualty of a short-lived boom.
The company, which started as a tap room in Kerry a decade ago before launching its blended whiskey last year, was already grappling with rising costs and supply chain disruptions. But Donald Trump’s global trade war hastened the end of the line for Killarney.
“Tariffs on Irish whiskey exports to the US and wider economic uncertainty have further impacted the business,” the company said as it shuttered with the loss of about 50 jobs.
Killarney’s troubles are a microcosm of the industry’s wider woes in Ireland. Tariffs are a further hit to a sector already beset by oversupply, faltering US demand and the soaring cost of everything from energy to labor.
