China: Budweiser to continue to invest in China
|
Budweiser China, a subsidiary of Budweiser Brewing Co APAC Ltd, will continue to invest in China - one of its largest markets globally - as the market increasingly shapes the group's production network and growth strategy, a senior executive was quoted as sayingg by China Daily on August 12.
One of its flagship sites, Budweiser Sedrin Brewery in Putian, Fujian province, is among the world's largest single-site breweries in terms of production capacity. Since its establishment 40 years ago, the facility has supported the city's economic development by attracting related industries, generating employment and promoting a "beer plus tourism" model through hosting festivals and visitor programs.
Craig Katerberg, chief legal and corporate affairs officer at Budweiser APAC, said that the Putian facility's role in developing local supply chains and industrial clusters align with its long-term strategy in China, where beer consumption remains one of the largest globally.
"We will continue our investment to develop and promote the growth of the local beer industry in Putian," said Katerberg, adding that the Budweiser Sedrin Brewery is one of its parent group AB InBev's key breweries.
After decades of development, Budweiser Sedrin Brewery, as a premium production base for AB InBev's eight major beer brands, has become

Spain: Spain takes number one spot in Europe for consumption and production of non-alcoholic beer
|
Spain has taken the number one spot in Europe for both the consumption and production of non-alcoholic beer, as drinkers increasingly swap traditional pints for alcohol-free options, Spanish News Today reported on August 11.
Industry figures show that sales of non-alcoholic beer grew by 4% in 2024, even as the overall beer market slowed slightly. Today, it accounts for 14% of all beer sold in the country and 16% of beer drunk at home. What was once a niche choice is now a mainstream part of Spanish life.
One of the reasons forthis shift is Spain’s Mediterranean drinking culture. Beer is often enjoyed with food in Spain, in company and in moderation. Around 81% of Spaniards drink beer socially, mainly in bars and restaurants, and more than one in four now choose the non-alcoholic version when the occasion calls for it, particularly if they are driving.
The Spanish Brewers Association says the change is also linked to a growing focus on health, education and responsible drinking.
“Today’s consumer values keeping their social and gastronomic habits without compromising safety,” the industry body explains.
This approach has attracted attention from international business schools, which are studying Spain as a case study in how to promote

Ethiopia: Habesha Breweries offers shareholders a 5,900 birr per share buyout
|
Habesha Breweries S.C. has officially extended an offer to its shareholders to sell their shares at 5,900 birr each, a move that comes amidst ongoing controversy over the company’s management decisions and its registration process on the Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX), Capital Ethiopia reported on August 10.
The offer—which includes a generous 34% premium above an earlier Deloitte valuation—is part of the majority shareholder Bavaria Overseas Breweries’ (BOB) request to purchase shares from local Ethiopian shareholders. According to company communications, the sale period has been extended until August 31, 2025, to allow interested shareholders more time to participate. Shareholders are urged to visit the company’s Shareholder Relations Division to sign sale and purchase agreements under the terms outlined.
This buyout offer follows sharp disagreements among shareholders about company actions during this transitional period. Local shareholders holding roughly 63.41% of the shares have signed contracts agreeing to the sale, but some Ethiopian shareholders have expressed serious concerns. Previously, shareholders were told that share transactions would be suspended until the company’s ESX listing—expected to be completed by November 2025 under the oversight of CBE Capital Investment Bank—is finalized.
The core of the dispute arises from allegations that while minority shareholders are restricted from converting dividends

Malaysia: Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia to raise beer prices in September
|
Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd will raise beer prices slightly on Sept 1, 2025, to protect profits amid rising costs and weak demand, as it expects beer sales volume to remain flat this year, The Edge Malaysia reported on August 12.
Managing director Stefano Clini, who said the increase would be in single digits, described the announcement as atypical because the company rarely shares pricing details publicly.
“Our objective is to protect our margin. We’re not aiming to expand them, but we are committed to ensuring they’re not eroded,” he said during a media briefing.
Clini noted that the lack of early stockpiling before Chinese New Year and lower festive demand will hurt sales, reducing annual volume by 3–4%.
He also warned that the price hike could cause a short-term dip in consumption for 2–3 months, but said it’s too early to predict the long-term effect.
That said, Clini expressed confidence in the group’s cost discipline, noting that despite investing hundreds of millions in infrastructure upgrades, the company has kept production costs stable — a rare achievement.
“That’s more than what most companies would achieve — typically, you’d expect costs to rise after such investment,” he said.
Clini added that weak consumer sentiment, inflation, and global
