USA: Alcohol consumption at its lowest level on record, survey shows
|
Alcohol consumption among adults in the U.S. is at the lowest level on record, a survey by analytics firm Gallup showed on August 13, as most Americans, for the first time, view even moderate drinking as harmful.
Gallup's latest Consumption Habits survey, conducted annually, showed that about 54% Americans reported drinking alcohol, compared with 58% in 2024 and 62% in 2023.
The figure falls below the previous record low of 55% in 1958 in the nearly nine decades of tracking by Gallup.
Alcohol sales have been falling since the pandemic drinking binge, as inflation and interest rates stretch consumer wallets. Spirit makers now also face growing warnings from public health authorities who say drinking even small amounts of alcohol is associated with at least seven types of cancer.
A majority of Americans — 53% — say moderate drinking is bad for health, Gallup found, up from 45% last year.
Fewer U.S. drinkers are consuming alcohol regularly, with a record-low 24% saying they had a drink in the previous day and 40% reporting more than a week since their last — the highest share since 2000, the survey found.
Average intake over the past seven days fell to 2.8 drinks, the lowest since 1996 and down from

Malaysia: Heineken Malaysia’s net profit for Q2 falls 8.93%
|
Heineken Malaysia Bhd saw its net profit for the second quarter ended June 30, 2025 (2QFY2025) fall 8.93%, weighed down by slower sales and higher costs from ongoing investments, The Edge Malaysia reported on August 15.
Its bourse filing showed that quarterly net profit came in at RM83 million, down from RM91.13 million a year earlier, while revenue slipped 5% to RM539.73 million from RM565.5 million.
Heineken Malaysia declared a single tier interim dividend of 40 sen per share, with an entitlement date of Oct 9, to be paid on Oct 30.
For the first half of FY2025, the group’s net profit eased 3.96% to RM205.15 million from RM213.61 million, while revenue fell 3.79% to RM1.3 billion from RM1.35 billion.
Heineken Malaysia said it continues to invest in commercial initiatives and digital infrastructure through the implementation of HEINEKEN’s Digital Backbone, a digital transformation programme designed to unlock the power of data, streamline processes and boost innovation to support long-term growth.
The Digital Backbone initiative is part of the group’s EverGreen strategy to future-proof its business.
In a statement, Heineken Malaysia managing director Martijn van Keulen said the group remains agile despite a challenging macroeconomic environment, leveraging digital solutions and data-driven decision-making to stay relevant

Australia: Barley exports total 799,530 tonnes in June
|
Australia exported 799,530 tonnes of barley and 243,394t of sorghum in June, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
For the month, China on 413,340t followed by Japan on 127,983t and Vietnam a distant third on 6328t were the major markets for June-shipped feed barley.
On 208,974t, China was also the biggest market for June-shipped malting barley, followed by Thailand on 23,707t and Vietnam on 3772t.
Likewise, China on 237,838t bought the vast majority of June-shipped sorghum, with Taiwan on 4036t and The Philippines on 1428t being the second and third-biggest markets.
While June sorghum shipments were less than half their May total, and feed barley exports fell 15 percent over the month, malting barley exports surged 29pc.
New-crop sales start
Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said the strong run of barley exports into June were part of Australia’s second-largest barley program on record.
“Strong Chinese demand continues to underpin barley exports, leading to expectations of 600,000t months for both July and August, before a steep drop-off into September as we run to the tightest carry on record,” Mr Roache said.
“New-crop barley demand has begun to fire up, with Chinese buyers active in the last week, and the market trading relatively

Japan: Kirin develops technique to create heat-resistant hops
|
Abnormal weather conditions and rising global temperatures are threatening world-wide production of hops, the key ingredient in beer, The Asahi Shimbun reported on August 14.
However, Kirin Holdings Co. has developed a technique to create heat-resistant hops during the seedling cultivation process without sacrificing their aroma, bitterness and flavor.
The company has filed a patent for the method and presented its research at a conference of the International Hop Growers’ Convention (IHGC) held in Germany in June.
Kirin hopes to put into practice its method of strengthening hops’ heat tolerance to ensure quality as the number of hop farmers in Japan continues to decline.
In 2022, Kirin developed the world’s first technology for mass producing hop seedlings. It will combine this technology with the heat-resistant cultivation method.
Hops, often called the “soul of beer,” normally thrive in cool climates.
“We have found a strong possibility of maintaining hop yields even in high temperatures,” said Riko Imahori of Kirin’s Research and Development Division. “From next fiscal year, we plan to start similar field trials overseas.”
The project began three years ago, focusing on a phenomenon called “heat acclimation,” where plants exposed to mild temperature stress beforehand can survive in high-temperature environments that are not lethal.
The company applied this
