USA: Alcohol consumption at its lowest level on record, survey shows
|
Alcohol consumption among adults in the U.S. is at the lowest level on record, a survey by analytics firm Gallup showed on August 13, as most Americans, for the first time, view even moderate drinking as harmful.
Gallup's latest Consumption Habits survey, conducted annually, showed that about 54% Americans reported drinking alcohol, compared with 58% in 2024 and 62% in 2023.
The figure falls below the previous record low of 55% in 1958 in the nearly nine decades of tracking by Gallup.
Alcohol sales have been falling since the pandemic drinking binge, as inflation and interest rates stretch consumer wallets. Spirit makers now also face growing warnings from public health authorities who say drinking even small amounts of alcohol is associated with at least seven types of cancer.
A majority of Americans — 53% — say moderate drinking is bad for health, Gallup found, up from 45% last year.
Fewer U.S. drinkers are consuming alcohol regularly, with a record-low 24% saying they had a drink in the previous day and 40% reporting more than a week since their last — the highest share since 2000, the survey found.
Average intake over the past seven days fell to 2.8 drinks, the lowest since 1996 and down from

USA, IL: 93 Octane Brewery opening new location in Elmhurst next week
|
93 Octane Brewery, a gas station inspired brewery located in St. Charles, is opening a new location in Elmhurst next week, the Daily Herald reported on August 14.
Founded inside a Pride store selling BP fuel, 93 Octane began as a 20-seat nano-brewery in St. Charles. Since then, the momentum of the brewery hasn’t slowed, expanding their craft beer selection, and developing a regionally sourced food menu to be served alongside their drinks.
Last spring, 93 Octane opened a production facility and expanded its taproom to try to accommodate for this growth. But, they still needed more space, and found that in Elmhurst.
The new brewery, at 171 N Addison St. in downtown Elmhurst, is a two-story space that blends indoor and outdoor seating with the capacity to welcome over 400 guests. They will serve brunch, lunch and dinner alongside 20 draft lines. The new location opens Thursday, Aug. 21.
“This expansion is proof that we’re creating something special that can compete with the best in local brewing,” said Mario Spina, CEO of Parent Petroleum. “It could be easy to write off 93 Octane as just ‘gas station beer,’ but we’ve assembled an all-star team with years of experience in both the craft beverage

USA, CT: New England Brewing Co. ready to open new facility this month
|
After years of planning for a second location, New England Brewing Co. (NEBCO) will finally open the doors on a new facility this month,CTInsider reported on August 13.
NEBCO's new waterfront facility at 5 Indian Neck Ave. in Branford will have its grand opening on Aug. 29, a spokesperson for the brewery said.
The building was previously home to the Stony Creek Brewery. NEBCO announced that it acquired the facility in July after spending over half a decade looking for a new location. In 2024, a deal for a new location in West Haven fell through after roughly two years of public hearings, lease negotiations and litigation prevented plans from moving forward.
NEBCO serves a variety of IPAs, American lagers, ales, stouts and other brews.
Since acquiring the new location, NEBCO has worked on renovations, including refinishing furniture, repainting tables, repainting the walls and new murals, according to NEBCO Director of Sales and Marketing Jamal Robinson. NEBCO's original location at 175 Amity Road in Woodbridge will remain open.
Robinson said that the brewery's kitchen will have a limited selection of items prepared by North Branford's Supreme Seafood Restaurant's owners, Robert Marcarelli and Jared Schulefand. The grand opening will also have food trucks from restaurants like

USA, TN: Memphis Made Brewing Company files for bankruptcy
|
Memphis Made Brewing Company, one of the larger craft beer makers in the city, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, News3Channel reported on August 8.
The filing would allow the company to reorganize its finances and pay creditors. The paperwork, filed Thursday, says the company has between $1 million and $10 million in assets.
But Memphis Made may not fade away, according to a post made on the brewery’s social media Saturday.
“We’re working on a plan that will enable us to continue brewing beer and serving our community. After the reorganization process, we believe we’ll be a better brewery on the other side,” the brewery said.
Memphis Made, known for styles including Fireside amber, Junt cream ale and Cat Nap IPA, is one of several breweries that opened in Memphis around 2013.
Owners Andy Ashby and Drew Barton originally opened the brewery, and later a taproom, in the Cooper-Young neighborhood. They moved the operation to a larger space on Madison in the Edge District last year. The company also operates a bar in the Memphis airport.
Memphis Made told the Memphis Business Journal they are exploring the possibility of selling the business.
The brewery released a statement on social media August 9, assuring the public they

Australia: Barley exports total 799,530 tonnes in June
|
Australia exported 799,530 tonnes of barley and 243,394t of sorghum in June, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
For the month, China on 413,340t followed by Japan on 127,983t and Vietnam a distant third on 6328t were the major markets for June-shipped feed barley.
On 208,974t, China was also the biggest market for June-shipped malting barley, followed by Thailand on 23,707t and Vietnam on 3772t.
Likewise, China on 237,838t bought the vast majority of June-shipped sorghum, with Taiwan on 4036t and The Philippines on 1428t being the second and third-biggest markets.
While June sorghum shipments were less than half their May total, and feed barley exports fell 15 percent over the month, malting barley exports surged 29pc.
New-crop sales start
Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said the strong run of barley exports into June were part of Australia’s second-largest barley program on record.
“Strong Chinese demand continues to underpin barley exports, leading to expectations of 600,000t months for both July and August, before a steep drop-off into September as we run to the tightest carry on record,” Mr Roache said.
“New-crop barley demand has begun to fire up, with Chinese buyers active in the last week, and the market trading relatively

Japan: Kirin develops technique to create heat-resistant hops
|
Abnormal weather conditions and rising global temperatures are threatening world-wide production of hops, the key ingredient in beer, The Asahi Shimbun reported on August 14.
However, Kirin Holdings Co. has developed a technique to create heat-resistant hops during the seedling cultivation process without sacrificing their aroma, bitterness and flavor.
The company has filed a patent for the method and presented its research at a conference of the International Hop Growers’ Convention (IHGC) held in Germany in June.
Kirin hopes to put into practice its method of strengthening hops’ heat tolerance to ensure quality as the number of hop farmers in Japan continues to decline.
In 2022, Kirin developed the world’s first technology for mass producing hop seedlings. It will combine this technology with the heat-resistant cultivation method.
Hops, often called the “soul of beer,” normally thrive in cool climates.
“We have found a strong possibility of maintaining hop yields even in high temperatures,” said Riko Imahori of Kirin’s Research and Development Division. “From next fiscal year, we plan to start similar field trials overseas.”
The project began three years ago, focusing on a phenomenon called “heat acclimation,” where plants exposed to mild temperature stress beforehand can survive in high-temperature environments that are not lethal.
The company applied this
