USA: AB InBev to invest $15 mln in ist St. Louis brewery
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev said on August 19 that it would invest $15 million in its U.S. brewery, at a time when President Donald Trump is pushing to boost domestic production.
The company's stock price rose 1% before the bell on August 19.
This move is part of Anheuser-Busch's $300 million investment announced in May to create and sustain manufacturing jobs in the U.S. this year.
Several businesses across the globe have been ramping up investments and expanding their presence in the United States to avoid tariffs and align with the Trump administration's "Made in America" push.
AB InBev said the investment includes funding for supply chain infrastructure to transport its domestically grown ingredients to the St. Louis, Missouri brewery, and to get beer brands, including Budweiser and Bud Light, to consumers.
In July, the company saw a decline in sales volumes due to tepid demand in Brazil and China, adding to investor woes over the industry growth.

Kenya: Diageo could exit Kenyan market amid new proposed alcohol regulations

British beverage giant Diageo has appointed Goldman Sachs and Bank of America to assess the future of its majority stake in the Nairobi-based East African Breweries Limited (EABL) in light of the company's growing challenges in Kenya, its largest East African market, MSN reported on August 15.
This follows the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA)'s proposed tough regulations for the sale of alcohol in the country.
If implemented, the regulations would restrict the sale of alcohol to pubs, bars, and licensed stores, and raise the legal drinking age from 18 to 21.
The company's operations in Kenya also face frequent policy changes, including tax uncertainties.
Higher taxes have accelerated the departure of global corporations like Johnson & Johnson and Procter & Gamble in recent years, and analysts predict that Diageo could follow suit.
"Large corporations frequently complain about the volatility of Kenya's tax system. Given the pressure Diageo's investors are putting on the company to sell off assets, all of this could pave the way for Diageo to sell its stake in EABL," Ian Mwangi, an economist, told Semafor.

Alcohol-free beer is gaining more and more followers in the Czech Republic: according to a recent survey by the IPSOS agency, carried out on behalf of the Czech Brewers’ and Maltsters’ Association (Český svaz pivovarů a sladoven), around 85% of the adult population reach for the alcohol-free variant at least now and again. The main reasons are the taste of flavoured varieties, conscious consumption and a healthier lifestyle, Prague Daily reported on August 17.
Production of alcohol-free beers, including flavoured versions, has been rising continuously in the Czech Republic for twelve years. Last year, more than 1.6 million hectolitres were brewed – almost 14% more than in the previous year and more than twice as much as in 2019. The share of total domestic beer consumption also rose to almost 10%; in 2019 it stood at 6.3%, and in 2013 at just 4.4%.
“We have been observing for years how the popularity of alcohol-free beers has been growing steadily. It is no longer just a drink for drivers or athletes. Czechs like the taste, they have their favourite varieties, and alcohol-free beers are now a firm part of breweries’ portfolios,” explains Tomáš Slunečko, Managing Director of the Czech Brewers’ and Maltsters’ Association.

Australia: Coopers Brewery launches its first non-alcoholic beer
|
Coopers Brewery has launched the first non-alcoholic beer under its iconic roundel, Coopers Zero, Drinks Digest reported on August 19.
Packaged in a striking silver can, Coopers Zero is the latest permanent addition to the Australian family brewery’s portfolio since Coopers Australian Lager was unveiled in 2023.
Coopers said the launch of Coopers Zero was designed to meet rising consumer demand for beer and beverages with no or lower alcohol (NOLO).
NOLO is the fastest growing beer category in Australia, now exceeding light beer in volume and retail value, according to market research firm Circana.
Appealing to health-conscious drinkers, Coopers Zero contains only 49 calories per 375ml can with all the flavour of a full-strength beer, minus the alcohol.
According to Coopers’ market research by TRA, younger Australians – aged 18-44 – are twice as likely to consume NOLO beverages compared to those aged 45+.

UK: UK crop production costs look set to rise in 2026
|
The Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board (AHDB) is forecasting a rise in crop production costs in the UK during 2026, Agriland reported on August 19.
For winter wheat, a 3% yearly climb in the full economic cost of production is expected for the 2026 crop at £1,659/ha, according to the board.
The cost of production for winter oilseed rape (OSR), winter barley, and spring barley is estimated at £1,509/ha, £1,495/ha and £1,268/ha respectively.
However, the key factor driving the anticipated climb in cost of production for harvest 2026 is the rise in fertiliser price.
The latest analysis carried out by AHDB confirmed that the costs of UK manufactured nitrate-based fertilisers increased by 14%, year-on-year, during the months of May and June 2025.
On the other hand, little change is currently expected in terms of overall crop protection or seed costs.
While variable costs look to be on the rise, current forecasts suggest there is more stability for overheads.
There are anticipated increases in rental value, administration costs, and labour.
However, a decline in costs for machinery and equipment costs – due to cheaper fuel – property and energy, and finance means total overheads for 2026 are forecast to increase slightly on 2025 levels.
