Brewery news Vietnam: Sabeco sticking to plans to expand capacity at its Cu Chi brewery
Ho Chi Minh City-headquartered Sabeco, controlled by Thai Beverage, is sticking to plans to expand capacity at its Cu Chi brewery despite repeated regulatory delays, The Investor reported on August 21.

According to its latest environmental impact assessment (EIA) report, Sabeco (HoSE: SAB) is seeking approval to raise the HCMC-based plant’s annual capacity to 350 million liters from 264 million.

The expansion, with an estimated investment of VND855 billion ($32.4 million), also includes construction of rental workshops for production, Sabeco said.

Sabeco has pursued the upgrade for several years. The brewer first filed an EIA in 2020, but the submission was returned for revisions. The plan was shelved during the pandemic before being resubmitted and also rejected in 2023. In June 2025, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment again disapproved the proposal and requested further amendments.

The 50-hectare Cu Chi facility, designed in 2002 and completed in 2007, currently produces about 264 million liters annually, including 118 million liters of bottled beer and 146 million liters of canned beer. The proposed expansion would lift canned beer output to 250 million liters while reducing bottled production to 100 million liters.

Actual output has consistently fallen short of design capacity, with 179 million liters produced in 2023 ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: Alken-Maes brewery names Belgian CEO
Belgian Kenny Willems will take over as CEO of brewery Alken-Maes on October 1, the company announced on August 21. Willems says his goal is to make beer more attractive again, as the sector struggles with falling sales and declining bar visits, Belga News Agency reported.

Alken-Maes, the Belgian subsidiary of Dutch brewing giant Heineken, is the one of the country’s biggest beer player after market leader AB InBev. Earlier this summer, Heineken reported weaker sales, including in Europe — mirroring the difficulties faced by other brewers amid inflation and broader economic headwinds.

“Our challenge is to get people back to the bar and to the beer shelves in the supermarket,” Willems said. “The Belgian beer landscape needs a breath of fresh air. Our sector is under pressure, and some brewers have even had to close their doors.”

The struggles were underscored on August 21 by Haacht Brewery, which reported an 8.6 per cent drop in half-year turnover to 30.7 million euros in what it called an “uncertain and challenging” market. The company did see small signs of progress, and is betting on a relaunch of its flagship brand Primus with lower- and no-alcohol beers to return to profitability.

Next to financial strain, the ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Oriental Brewery’s Cass beer ranked 23rd in the “2025 World’s Top 50 Beer Brands by Value” list
Oriental Brewery, a subsidiary of AB InBev, has announced that its brand Cass has ranked 23rd in the “2025 World’s Top 50 Beer Brands by Value” list released by the global brand valuation agency Brand Finance.

This year, Cass was the only Korean beer brand to make the list. It has continued its upward trend, moving from 36th place in 2023 to 32nd in 2024. In this survey, Cass’s brand value was assessed at approximately $1.4 billion (about 1.9 trillion won), a 75% increase from the previous year.

In this evaluation, Cass stood shoulder to shoulder with world-renowned brands, outranking famous beers representing various countries such as Brazil’s Brahma (25th), Thailand’s Chang (29th), Germany’s Beck’s (30th), and Singapore’s Tiger (34th). Among the 14 Asian beer brands included in the Top 50, Cass received the 7th highest valuation, establishing itself as a representative Asian beer alongside China’s Snow, Japan’s Asahi and Kirin, and the Philippines’ San Miguel.

Cass’s position in the domestic market remains solid. In the second quarter of this year, “Cass Fresh” captured a 48.8% market share in the home beer market based on brand sales volume, ranking first. The light beer “Cass Light” recorded a 4.9% market share, ranking third. With ...More info on site
