Brewery news Japan: Orion Breweries plans IPO on Tokyo stock exchange
Japan’s fifth-largest beer brewery, headquartered in Tomigusuku, Okinawa Prefecture, announces preparations for an initial public offering (IPO) on the Tokyo stock exchange this September, Asia Brewers Network reported on August 22.

Okinawa-based beer maker Orion Breweries is preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) in Tokyo as early as next month, according to a Reuters report.

The flotation would mark a significant exit for private equity giants Carlyle Group and Nomura Holdings, who jointly acquired Japan’s fifth-largest brewer in 2019 for approximately JPY57 billion (US$386 million).

A successful debut would provide much-needed momentum to Japan’s sluggish IPO market, which has seen limited activity since JX Advanced Metals’ listing in March.

Nomura Securities, SMBC Nikko Securities and Mizuho Financial Group have been appointed as lead underwriters.

The company is expected to announce listing details and offering size in the next few weeks, according to the report, though exact timing remains dependent on market conditions.

The planned IPO comes at a challenging time for Japan’s beer industry, which has faced persistent headwinds from changing consumer preferences and economic pressures.

Major brewers reported a 4% year-on-year decline in shipment volumes for June, as inflation-weary consumers increasingly opt for cheaper alternatives, including low-malt beer and canned cocktails.

Despite broader sector challenges, Orion’s ...More info on site

Brewery news Germany: Historic Lang-Bräu brewery to close after 172 years in business
The historic Lang-Bräu brewery in northern Bavaria, Germany, is closing its doors after 172 years in business. The family-owned brewery, located less than half an hour from the former East German border, has survived two world wars and the fall of the Iron Curtain. Now, it faces closure due to mounting financial pressures and changing consumer habits among younger generations, Vinetur reported on August 29.

Lang-Bräu’s owners made the decision last summer to cease operations. The brewery needed an investment of 12 million euros to modernize its equipment, a sum that proved unattainable for the small company. Richard Hope, director of the family business and now overseeing the shutdown process, explained that breweries can withstand many challenges, but when sales drop and costs keep rising, there is no room left for long-term planning.

Lang-Bräu’s situation is not unique. Across Germany, hundreds of breweries are under similar pressure. Inflation and rising energy prices have driven up operating costs. At the same time, beer consumption in Germany has been falling steadily. According to official statistics, per capita beer consumption dropped from 126 liters in 2000 to just 88 liters in 2025. In the first half of this year, beer production fell by 6.3 percent ...More info on site

WhiskyWhisky News Whisky

Whisky news Canada, ON: Diageo to shut one of its whisky bottling plants in Ontario
Diageo will shut one of its Crown Royal whisky bottling facilities in Ontario, Canada by February 2026, as part of efforts to improve North American supply chain, the world's largest spirits maker said on August 28.

The London-based company said its strategy is to shift some of its bottling volume closer to U.S. customers.

Diageo did not specify how many jobs will be lost, but said it will support impacted employees and work closely with labour unions.

The Amherstburg, Ontario plant bottled Diageo's Crown Royal Canadian whisky; the operations will be shifted to its Valleyfield, Quebec facility.

The maker of Johnnie Walker whisky and Smirnoff vodka reported a smaller-than-expected fall in annual profit in early August, soothing investor concerns in tough market conditions.
