Germany: Landsberg family brewery to cease production at the end of this year
|
Germany’s Landsberg family brewery will cease production at the end of this year, diesachsen.de reported on September 19.
"The developments of recent years and the outlook for the future unfortunately no longer hold any positive prospects for us," said the head of the family business, Jenny Thormann. "We will continue to produce until the end of the year and then the sale will take place."
The first beer was bottled there in March 1997 - for Thormann's 14th birthday. Today, the market is different, the brewery boss knows: "Above all, very high energy costs, a sharp decline in beer consumption and the fact that we cannot pass on the massive increase in costs in almost all areas in recent years to the necessary extent are reasons that have led us to make this decision."
Thormann had taken over the management of the brewery and the malt factory in 2019 when her father died.

World: Molson Coors names insider Rahul Goyal as new CEO
|
Molson Coors named insider Rahul Goyal as its CEO on September 22, to succeed Gavin Hattersley who retires this year, as the beer maker battles weakening demand and tariffs in the United States, Yahoo Finance reported.
Goyal, currently chief strategy officer at the Coors Light maker, is set to assume the role on October 1. He has been with the company for more than two decades, having served in roles including finance chief for the company in India.
The new CEO will be tasked with steering the company at a tough time for the industry, with alcohol consumption among American adults falling to its lowest level on record.
"Few executives know Molson Coors better than Rahul Goyal. His cross-company experience and role in pushing the brewer beyond beer position him to meet fast-changing consumer demands," said EMarketer analyst Zak Stambor.
"But with many consumers turning away from beer and alcohol altogether, guiding the company's path forward won't be easy."
Demand for alcohol in the U.S. also remains uncertain, as discretionary spending among consumers is pressured due to inflation and tariff-driven uncertainty.

USA: Michelob Ultra overtakes Modelo Especial as the best-selling beer in the US
|
Michelob Ultra has overtaken Constellation Brands’ Modelo Especial as the best-selling beer in the United States, CNBC reported on September 22.
Michelob Ultra claimed the top spot as the best-selling beer in retail channels in the 52 weeks ended Sept. 14, parent company Anheuser-Busch announced on September 22, citing data from Circana. The light lager is also the top seller in bars and restaurants, according to Nielsen IQ data for the 52 weeks ended July 12.
For brewer AB InBev, Michelob Ultra’s triumph reverses the company’s struggles from two years ago. Modelo Especial unseated Bud Light in the wake of conservative backlash over the flagship beer’s partnership with transgender social media influencer Dylan Mulvaney. Bud Light had previously held the title as the top-selling beer in the U.S. for more than two decades.
Modelo’s declining popularity comes as Constellation faces key challenges to its business, including tariffs on aluminum and Mexican imports and weaker demand from Hispanic consumers.
Historically, Hispanic beer drinkers have accounted for roughly half of Constellation’s customer base, although growing demand from non-Hispanic consumers helped fuel Modelo’s rise. Executives have said that President Donald Trump’s immigration policies and related job losses have weighed on Hispanic consumers’ spending.

India: Mount Everest Breweries enters Karnataka market through acquisition of Cheers Breweries Ltd

Mount Everest Breweries Ltd (MEBL), part of the Associated Kedia Group, has announced its entry into Karnataka through the acquisition of Mysuru-based Cheers Breweries Ltd, Enterpreneur reported on September 10.
This move marks the company's 12th state of operations and comes with an investment of around INR 300 crore funded through internal accruals and structured debt. The outlay covers acquisition, capital expenditure and working capital.
The Cheers facility has an annual production capacity of 1.5 million hectolitres. With production beginning in the first week of September, MEBL's total capacity has expanded from 2.0 million to 3.5 million hectolitres, reflecting a nearly 75 per cent increase.
The company expects the acquisition to generate incremental revenue of INR 350–400 crore by FY28 and contribute to a 15–18 per cent topline growth over the next three to four years.
The expansion forms part of MEBL's plan to establish four key brewery hubs across the country. The Mysuru unit will reduce reliance on plants in central and northern India and ensure faster supply to markets in Karnataka, Pondicherry, Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala by the third quarter of this year.

World: AB InBev agrees ‘unprecedented’ marketing arrangement with Netflix
|
AB InBev has announced a marketing arrangement with Netflix that the brewer believes is “unprecedented in the global reach and scale of activations” across its portfolio, Global Drinks Intel reported on September 22.
The deal, announced today, will lead to co-marketing campaigns between the two for brands including Budweiser, Corona (outside of the US), Michelob Ultra and Stella Artois. Also lined up are “consumer activations, title integrations, limited-edition packaging (and) digital promotions”.
Financial details behind the multi-year partnership were not disclosed.
The co-branding aspect will feature later this year during Netflix’s ‘NFL Christmas Game Day’ coverage of two American football fixtures on Christmas Day. Also earmarked is the streaming service’s 2027 Women’s World Cup soccer tournament coverage.
The agreement is an improvement, geographically speaking, on AB InBev’s partnership for Corona Cero with the Olympic Games, which was announced at the start of last year. The alcohol-free extension of Corona, which AB InBev said at the time was available in 180 markets worldwide, is handled in the US – along with the rest of the former Modelo portfolio – by Constellation Brands.

Taiwan: Taiwan Customs confirms anti-dumping duties on Chinese beer, steel
|
Taiwan’s Customs Administration on September 24 confirmed that beer and certain hot-rolled flat steel products imported from China would continue to be subject to anti-dumping duties, adjusting the rates for specified companies starting the same day, Taipei Times reported.
The agency said imports of beer from Chinese companies would face duties of 19.13 percent to 51.94 percent and designated hot-rolled flat steel products from 16.10 percent to 20.15 percent.
Provisional duties have been in place since June, but the agency’s announcement — following the conclusion of its investigation into the unfair trading practice — confirms the factual basis of Chinese dumping in these product categories.
According to the Customs Administration, the anti-dumping duties targeting several Budweiser-affiliated breweries are set at 31.3 percent, down 2.55 percentage points from the provisional rate in June.
A Chinese brewery producing Kirin beer products was assigned a final dumping duty of 19.13 percent, an increase of 6 percentage points, while other beer manufacturers or exporters were given 51.94 percent, down 12.2 percentage points.

Australia: Malting barley shipments up 37% in July
|
Australia exported 633,879 tonnes of barley and 400,469t of sorghum in July, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Feed barley exports for July totalled 302,528t, down 42 percent from the 519,651t shipped in June.
China on 257,727t was the major destination for July shipped feed barley, with Japan on 33,708t followed by Thailand on 4606t the second and third-biggest markets.
On malting, July shipments at 331,351t were up 37pc from the June total of 242,034t.
China was the major destination, taking 70pc, or 233,377t, of the total, followed by Mexico on 34,800t and Vietnam on 33,109t.
Reflecting the availability new-crop out of Central Queensland, sorghum exports in July were up 68pc from the June total of 240,219t.
China on 393,611t was the destination for 98pc of July sorghum shipments, with Taiwan on 4818t and The Philippines on 1897t the second and third-biggest markets respectively for the month.
Compass Grain director Sam Roache said China-focused barley exports into July continued to track strongly, and shipping stems indicate close to 500,000t will show up for August.
