Brewery news Canada: 41% of Canadian say they reduced alcohol consumption last year, report reveals
From restaurants to retail, a shift in Canada’s drinking habits is taking hold, CityNews Everywhere reported on September 25.

A new report from Restaurants Canada reveals that 41 per cent of Canadians say they’ve reduced their alcohol consumption over the past year, a trend that’s forcing the restaurant industry to adapt.

“There is a concern,” said Milena Stanoeva, a spokesperson for Restaurants Canada. “Alcohol is one of the highest-margin items for restaurants, so they’re now exploring ways to better serve those demographics.”

That’s where the rise of mocktails comes in. More bars and restaurants are introducing alcohol free beverage menus.

“Honestly, a lot of them are really good,” said one Toronto diner. “Some of the mixologists in the city are fantastic.”

The trend isn’t only in restaurants. At the Village Grocer in Markham, president of the store, Brad Fletcher says sales of non-alcoholic beer and wine are on the rise.

“Non-alcoholic beer and wine is really taking hold,” he said. “We are seeing great trends in that in our store.”

He says there’s a financial benefit for someone who sells all kinds of products.

“The margin on non-alcoholic wines, it completely exceeds what we get in beverage alcohol,” said Fletcher.

One person who spoke to CityNews says the shift ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: AB InBev’s new investment in Los Angeles brewery to fuel increased production of Michelob ULTRA
Anheuser-Busch InBev, a leading American manufacturer and maker of Michelob ULTRA, Busch Light, Budweiser, Bud Light, Stella Artois, and Cutwater Spirits, announced on September 25 a new $7.4 million investment in its Los Angeles, CA Brewery. The investment will go toward upgrading brewing and packaging equipment to fuel increased production of Michelob ULTRA, America's #1 top-selling and fastest-growing beer.

This latest $7.4 million investment in its Los Angeles Brewery is part of Anheuser-Busch's ongoing Brewing Futures initiative, through which the company is investing more than $300 million in its U.S. facilities to create and sustain U.S. manufacturing jobs.

Brendan Whitworth, CEO, Anheuser-Busch, said: "Investing in our Los Angeles Brewery enables us to brew and deliver more of the highest-quality beers and beyond that consumers love – including Michelob ULTRA, the #1 top-selling and fastest-growing beer in America. Investments like this one strengthen our position as a leading American manufacturer, allowing us to continue driving economic growth and creating and sustaining jobs in the communities where we operate."

Anheuser-Busch opened its Los Angeles Brewery in 1954. The company has invested $180 million in the brewery over the past five years, part of the nearly $2 billion it has invested in its ...More info on site

Whisky news USA, TX & TN: Diageo halts whisky production at two distilleries in the US
British alcohol conglomerate Diageo has temporarily halted whisky production at its Balcones and George Dickel distilleries, The Spirits Business reported on September 24.

The pause has resulted in the loss of 17 jobs at the Balcones distillery in Waco, Texas, while staffing at Dickel's Cascade Hollow distillery in Tullahoma, Tennessee, remains unaffected for the time being.

A 2011 article reported that the George Dickel distillery was responsible for 33 employees. According to online estimates, Balcones had a staff of between 27 and 51 prior to this week's layoffs.

Diageo says all team leaders at Balcones will remain in their current positions, including head distiller Jared Himstedt, blender Emma Crandall, blending manager Gabriel RiCharde, brand education manager Alex Elrod and national brand ambassador Charlie McRae. Both facilities will remain open to the public for tours and tastings.

“Every year we run standard temporary slowdowns or shutdowns across our operations to support our efficiency and productivity goals," a spokesperson for Diageo North America told The Spirits Business.

“Since we are ahead of schedule with the volume we produce at the site, this year we decided to temporarily pause our distilling operations and barrel-filling activity through June 2026."

“During this time, employees will work ...More info on site
