Brewery news USA, OR: Upright Brewing calling it quits
One of Portland’s landmark breweries is calling it quits, wweek.com reported on September 30.

Upright Brewing, long known as one of Portland’s highest-quality craft beer, announced on social media Sept. 30 that it will cease production in a couple of months.

“Well folks, it’s with a heavy heart that I have to say this, but the time has come to close the brewery,” Upright founder Alex Ganum wrote on Instagram. “Upright has been a proud part of the Portland beer scene for over sixteen years, a time that has been a bit of a roller coaster with change in the industry and the world at large. It has been an incredible experience on our end, and I hope that we helped people feel joy and stimulation, whether it was by way of a tasty beer or an honest chat in the taproom.”

According to the announcement, the brewery will cease production in a couple of months but the 240 N Broadway tap room will remain open through the end of December. Upright’s satellite location, the Beer Station at 7151 NE Prescott St., will remain open and gradually transition to serving all beers from other breweries.

In its 16 years of existence, Upright has won ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Winter barley seed sales progressing despite continuing pressure on crop prices
Many growers are sticking with winter barley this coming season, with seed sales progressing well despite the continuing pressure on crop prices, reports one seed merchant, Farmers’ Weekly reported on September 27.

“Seed volumes are only slightly down on the same time last year which, considering the year we have had, shows strong and ongoing support for the crop, plus there is still time for further uptake,” says Agrii seed specialist David Leaper.

“For 2-row conventional varieties, the top-yielders Caravelle and Tardis account for more than 80% of sales, but there are several good varieties behind these that have earned their place in grower portfolios.

However, he adds that the demand for winter malting-types, Craft and Buccaneer, is noticeably down due to lack of end-user contracts.

“Interest in hybrids remains strong with Kingsbarn, Quantock and Armadillo leading hybrid variety choice, with growing interest in Inys and the barley yellow dwarf virus-resistant Kestrel.”

Combined Agrii and AHDB trial data shows average yields of 9t/ha across the country, with yields reaching 11.5t/ha and higher, recorded further north and on heavier soils.

“Considering many growers experienced exceptionally wet conditions which made drilling and establishment difficult, the crop proved its resilience, and this has since been underlined by ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Asahi unable to resume production a day after cyberattack
Japanese beer and beverage giant Asahi Group Holdings has not been able to resume production at domestic factories a day after a cyberattack and cannot foresee when it can be resumed, a company spokesperson said on September 30, Reuters reported.

The company has 30 plants in Japan making beer, beverage and food products, but it is still investigating whether all of them have stopped production, the spokesperson added.

The maker of Asahi Super Dry Beer, Nikka Whisky and Mitsuya Cider said on September 29 its group companies in Japan suspended operations, including order processing, shipping and call centre functions, due to a cyberattack-caused system outage, although no personal information leakage has been confirmed.

Brewery news Malaysia: Kirin Brewery announces establishment of Malaysian arm to drive Southeast Asia growth
Japan’s Kirin Brewery Company, Limited has announced the establishment of Kirin Brewery Southeast Asia SDN BHD (KBSEA) in Malaysia as part of its strategy to strengthen its business foundation and capture growth opportunities in the region, Malay Mail reported on September 28.

Kirin Journal reported that the new entity will officially begin operations on Oct 1 and take over certain functions previously managed by Kirin Holdings Singapore Pte Ltd.

Kirin said the move would enable more agile decision-making and allow the company to respond more quickly to local consumer needs in the rapidly growing Southeast Asian alcoholic beverage market.

KBSEA will spearhead marketing strategies and brand development across Southeast Asia, work with local distributors to build a stronger regional presence, and expand Kirin’s product portfolio.

The company said it also plans to launch new products and promote original equipment manufacturing (OEM) operations to better meet consumer demand and boost competitiveness.

Brewery news UK: Non-alcoholic Guinness sales overtake original brand drink
Sales of no and low alcoholic alternatives of beers have overtaken their boozy originals for the first time as younger generations turn towards sobriety, GBNews.com reported on September 28.

Online grocer Ocado has reported that sales of non-alcoholic Guinness 0.0 have skyrocketed past sales of the traditional drink.

In fact, 53 per cent of Guinness deliveries across the UK are made up by the zero per cent drink, the Mail on Sunday has reported.

Shauna Clark Fitzpatrick, a drinks buyer at Ocado, said: "We've seen an uplift in no- and low-alcohol drinks for a while now as consumers become more mindful of their consumption.

"In the last year, we've grown the category by 56 per cent, making it easier than ever for customers to find a drink that suits their needs, whatever the occasion."

First launched in 2020, the brewer started selling the alcohol-free variant, which now makes up around 20 per cent of its total sales.

The brewer insists that the drink “boasts the same beautifully smooth taste, perfectly balanced flavour and unique dark colour” - just without the alcohol.

Guinness has been in good company as a range of Britain’s most loved beer brands have followed suit, with Heineken, Peroni, Moretti and Asahi launching similar ...More info on site

Brewery news Germany: Radeberger Group to distribute Estrella Damm beer in Germany from January
The Radeberger Group is to become the exclusive sales, distribution and marketing partner for Estrella Damm beer in Germany from January, Trade Magazin reported on September 30.

According to a statement from the German brewing group, Estrella owner Grupo Damm will be transferring responsibility for the national expansion of the brand to Radeberger.

The long-term cooperation agreement for Estrella covers all distribution channels, including bars and restaurants in on-trade and retail/supermarkets in the off-trade.

As a result, the Radeberger Group is strengthening its distribution portfolio of international brands, which already includes established names such as Guinness, Hop House 13, and Staropramen Premium Lager.

The Radeberger Gruppe currently produces brands such as Radeberger Pilsner, Jever and Schöfferhofer Weizen, as well as the Selters mineral water brand.

In March, parent company Oetker reshuffled Radeberger’s management which saw Dr Niels Lorenz join to oversee its beer and non-alcoholic beverages business unit.

Radeberger said Estrella will also be integrated into the group’s event and festival business and supported by sales promotion measures in Germany, including social media campaigns, with the aim of further building the brand.

Jörn Goertz, marketing director responsible for the international portfolio of Radeberger, said: “The successful development of international brands under our leadership has convinced Grupo Damm ...More info on site
