USA, ME: Rail Yard Brewing to launch in former Bissell Brothers location in Milo
|
John Riitano and Tracy Bonney-Corson have taken over the former Bissell Brothers location in Milo where they plan to launch Rail Yard Brewing and the Rusty Rail restaurant, Portland Food Map reported on October 9.
Corson has extensive experience in the healthcare field and will be leading operations. Riitano is the brewer and co-owner of Two Knights Brewing in Sangerville and will head-up brewing at Rail Yard as well. They hope to launch the business by the end of year.

USA, IL: Chicago’s Maplewood Brewery & Distillery announces plans for second location in Glen Ellyn
|
Chicago’s Maplewood Brewery & Distillery announced plans to open a second location in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, bringing its signature Lounge vibes, award-winning beer and spirits, and a new kitchen-forward concept to the western suburbs, Craft Brewing Business reported on October 16.
The Glen Ellyn space, located at 486 Pennsylvania Ave., will take over the former Two Hound Red Brewery footprint. It comes complete with a 15-barrel brewhouse, outdoor patio, and plenty of room for Maplewood to stretch out with:
• Expanded food options,
• exclusive small-batch beers,
• morning coffee service,
• cocktails,
• and even THC seltzers.
“We’ve always dreamed of growing beyond the city, but in a way that still feels like Maplewood,” said founding brewer and CEO Adam Cieslak. “Glen Ellyn gives us that perfect blend of community, walkability, and small-town charm.”
The new location is slated to open in spring 2026 after renovations to brighten the space, enhance indoor-outdoor flow, and add signature Maplewood design flourishes. USA, SD: Remedy Brewing Co. now brewing in Sioux Falls
|
Roundhouse Brew Pub is now brewing its beer in Sioux Falls instead of Minnesota, Siouxfalls.Business reported on October 14.
Remedy Brewing Co. has taken over production for locally owned Roundhouse, which has ties to Roundhouse Brewery in Nisswa, Minnesota.
The Minnesota brewery gave up its license to sell beer in other states so it could have a liquor license for its second-floor hall that hosts weddings and other gatherings, said Jason Walsh, who has an ownership stake in both. It also has a taphouse license now that allows it to brew beer to sell on-site.
That left the Sioux Falls brew pub with a decision – switch to selling other brands of beer or figure out a way to make its own beer.
“We talked to our customers, and people liked our beers,” Walsh said.
Rather than investing in brewing equipment, Walsh acquired the recipes, and Roundhouse Brew Pub contracted with Remedy to make the beer.
The first of those beers, the golden ale Pontoon, was tapped last week at the brew pub, which is at 1515 E. 69th St.

USA, CO: Never Summer Brewery hosting a goodbye party on October 18
|
Never Summer Brewery in Granby is hosting a goodbye party on Oct. 18 before closing its doors indefinitely, Sky-Hi News reported on October 15.
Kirk Main has owned and run the business at 62 E. Agate Ave. for more than a decade. Now, he plans to retire and take a much-anticipated solo roadtrip across the nation in his camper with no return date or itinerary.
“There is no guarantee that I will reopen in a few years but I’m keeping my options open, so don’t hold your breath,” Main wrote in a Facebook post announcing the closing.
Never Summer has become notorious for its unique locally-focused brews, such as the Kill Dozer E.S.B., a strong English pale ale inspired by Granby history. In the nearly 40 years he has lived in Grand County, Main said he has built countless strong connections with his patrons and neighboring business owners. He partners with neighbors such as Maverick’s Grille, occasionally providing them with kegs to serve his brews at their restaurant.
“Kirk’s been an important part of the community, bringing great beer to Granby for years, and he will be sorely missed,” said Sean Richardson, owner of Maverick’s Grille.

USA, WA: Blewett Brewing’s new Wenatchee location to become its primary brewery
|
When Badger Mountain Brewing closed its business in Wenatchee at the end of 2024, ending a ten-year run, the building’s landlord went looking for a new tenant. The Chelan Douglas Regional Port Authority, which owns the building in downtown Wenatchee, considered three proposals, the Washington Beer Blog reported on October 13.
Without going into details, two of the proposals were from breweries already operating in Washington that were looking to add an additional location. The third proposal came from what would be a new brewery. In the end, the Port Authority selected the proposal from Blewett Brewing, which hoped to take over the space and operate a brewpub.
Blewett Brewing opened in Leavenworth in 2013. More accurately, it originally opened as a pizzeria operating as Idlewild Pizza, but three years after opening the owners decided to fulfill their dream of adding a brewery to the business. Now Blewett Brewing will bring its pizzeria-brewpub concept to Wenatchee.

Smartmouth Brewing Co. is closing shop in Norfolk after 13 years at the original Chelsea location, Wavy.com reported on October 13.
The brewery opened its tasting room at 1309 Raleigh Ave. in 2012.
They posted this message on their website about the decision to close at the end of this year:

Africa: Diageo fined over anti-competitive practices in African markets

Global beverage firm Diageo has agreed to pay $750,000 (Sh96.9 million) to settle a four-year competition investigation by the COMESA Competition Commission (CCC) over alleged restrictive business practices across several East and Southern African markets, Capital Business reported on October 14.
The settlement follows a probe launched in June 2021 into allegations that Diageo’s distribution agreements in Eswatini, Seychelles, Uganda, and Zambia breached Article 16(1) of the COMESA Competition Regulations.
The Commission’s inquiry centered on practices such as market allocation, price fixing, and single-branding restrictions that allegedly limited trade within the regional bloc.
According to the Commission, Diageo’s agreements included clauses restricting distributors from operating beyond allocated territories, as well as provisions against selling to customers who might re-export products.
The investigation also flagged instances of minimum resale price maintenance in Seychelles and Uganda, as well as single-branding obligations in Uganda, which the regulator said constrained competition.
“However, restrictions on passive sales are a very serious offence and would always be considered a breach of the Regulations because they are an affront to the overriding Treaty objective of the single market integration.”
To resolve the case without admitting liability, Diageo entered into commitment negotiations in May 2025, agreeing to remove restrictive clauses within 180 days.

Australia: Western Australia’s grain harvest could smash record set three years ago
|
Western Australia’s grain harvest could smash the record set three years ago with a big crop planted and a boom in barley-growing, The Countryman reported on October 17.
The latest industry forecast estimates the State’s farmers could harvest 25.4 million tonnes of grain between now and February, challenging the 26Mt record set in 2022.
The forecast, released by the Grain Industry Association of WA, was up 2Mt on last month’s estimate and comes as harvest kicks off in the Esperance area.
It will be the fourth time in five years WA grain farmers have harvested a crop bigger than 20Mt, after breaking through what many thought was an unachievable barrier in 2021.
Driving this year’s bumper harvest is the additional 500,000ha of crop planted compared to three years ago, as farmers continue to prioritise cropping over sheep.
GIWA crop report author Michael Lamond, an agronomist at York, said the amount of land cropped in WA has increased by about 15 per cent in the past four years, partially driven by the Albanese Government’s plan to ban live sheep exports.

World: Diageo faces investor pay revolt

Diageo, the struggling owner of Guinness and Johnnie Walker whisky, is facing an investor backlash next month over nearly £8.5m in stock awards handed to the frontrunner to become its next chief executive, Sky News reported on October 17.
Sky News has learnt that investors in Diageo are being urged to vote against its pay report at its annual meeting in early November because of disquiet over the lack of performance conditions attached to shares awarded to Nik Jhangiani.
Mr Jhangiani joined the company, which also owns Baileys and Smirnoff, as its finance chief just over a year ago.
In July, he was elevated to become interim chief executive following Debra Crew's ousting over the company's lacklustre performance.
Glass Lewis, one of the leading proxy advisers which makes recommendations to institutional shareholders on voting decisions, has called on them to oppose Diageo's pay report because of Mr Jhangiani's recruitment awards.
"Given the significant quantum of the awards, approximately £8.48m, we believe that shareholders may reasonably have expected greater clarification as to the determination of the conditions associated with such awards," Glass Lewis said.

Faced with exclusive contracts, rent hikes, and the threat of reprisals, bar owners across Luxembourg describe a market dominated by two major breweries, which the competition authority now accuses of restricting competition, RTL Today reported on October 14.
In mid-September, Luxembourg's competition authority publicly accused two major breweries of dominating and restricting the beer market.
While not officially named by the authority, the breweries in question are understood to be Brasserie de Luxembourg (producer of Diekirch) and Brasserie Nationale (producer of Bofferding). They are alleged to use exclusive contracts that compel bars, restaurants, and hotels to purchase and serve primarily their brands.
According to a 2019 report from the competition authority, cited recently by the Luxemburger Wort, these contracts can require establishments to sell at least 80% of a specific brand. They may also set minimum sales quotas and turnover targets, offering discounts or providing equipment like taps and refrigerators in return.
This dynamic was confirmed by multiple bar owners who spoke anonymously to RTL, citing fear of reprisal from the breweries. India’s craft beer maker Bira 91 is reportedly grappling with serious financial and operational challenges. The company’s latest audit report, combined with mounting employee unrest, highlights deep structural issues that threaten its stability, according to a report by The Economic Times.
The FY24 audit by Walker Chandiok & Co, part of Grant Thornton International, revealed that B9 Beverages, the parent company of Bira 91, faces significant market, credit and liquidity risks. The report noted that the group’s net worth has fully eroded, with liabilities surpassing assets by ₹619.6 crore as of March 31, 2024. Negative cash flows of ₹84 crore and accumulated losses of ₹1,904 crore were also recorded.
The auditors said that these conditions suggest a material uncertainty that could cast doubt on the company’s ability to continue. Despite this, founder Ankur Jain stated that it is not uncommon for growth-stage businesses to have higher current liabilities than current assets, the news report said.

Trinidad and Tobago: Carib Brewery reveals significant increase in prices due to 100% excise duty hike
|
Carib Brewery revealed on October 16 a significant increase in prices of several popular beverages, including Carib, Stag and Guinness, following the government’s 100 per cent hike in excise duties on alcoholic drinks announced in the 2026 budget, the Newsday reported on October 16.
Effective immediately, the company’s new price list shows a suggested retail price of $13 per bottle for Carib, Stag and Pilsner, up from $10-$11 previously.
Stouts such as Royal Extra Stout now retail for $15, while Guinness and Heineken have both moved to $22 per bottle.
Non-alcoholic products Malta and Shandy have increased to $10. There are no price changes for Smirnoff Ice, Caribe Hard Cider, Vitamalt, Ginseng-Up, Smalta, Heineken 0.0, and Rockstone Tonic Wine.
The increases are tied to Legal Notice No 376, which doubled the excise duty on alcoholic beverages from $5.14 to $10.28 per litre.
That change took immediate effect on locally produced alcohol – including Carib Brewery’s products – as excise duties are payable when goods leave bonded warehouses for sale.
Imported products will face similar increases later, pending review by the Solicitor General’s office.

Peroni has ditched a much-loved lager just two years after launch - even though customers say it’s the “perfect summer” beer, The Sun reported on October 13.
Beverage giant Asahi UK unveiled the Peroni Nastro Azzurro Stile Capri in March 2023 to entice younger customers.

Drinkers particularly appreciated having a lighter 4.2% ABV alternative to the standard 5.1% Azzuro product.
