Brewery news Canada, SK: Saskatchewan government updates craft beverage production levy
The Government of Saskatchewan has announced changes to the craft production levy for craft refreshment beverages aimed at reducing barriers for small producers, West Central Online reported on November 15.

Under the new rules, the threshold for producers to qualify as a craft operation has increased from 3,500 hectolitres to 30,000 hectolitres. The production levels tied to each levy rate within the threshold have also been raised, creating a more gradual progression as production volumes grow.

“Refreshment beverages such as hard seltzers and iced teas have become increasingly popular in recent years, with craft producers providing more choice for consumers than ever before,” said Alana Ross, Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA). “Modernizing our approach reflects this change and better aligns the refreshment beverage category with how other product categories are treated under the craft production levy system.”

The production levy is remitted to SLGA by eligible craft producers who choose to self-distribute rather than sell through SLGA’s warehouse. Levies are calculated based on production volume. Separate levy structures exist for beer, wine, cider, and spirits, each with their own thresholds for qualifying as a craft producer.

The changes were communicated to industry and took effect on Nov. 1.

Brewery news USA, PA: DilliGAF Brewing opens in Dilliner
Greene County had been without a brewery for 114 years – since Waynesburg Brewing made its last call in 1911, the Observer-Reporter reported on November 15.

That is no longer the case, following the Oct. 25 opening of DilliGAF Brewing in Dilliner, where beer is flowing as freely as the nearby waters of the Monongahela River.

Spouses Dave and Cheryl Browne, the owners, hopped to it and created a brewery and bar that ended a century-plus drought of locally produced brew.

Their marriage has resulted in a perfect marriage of professional aspirations. “I always wanted to own a bar,” Cheryl said. “When Dave and I met in 2015, he wanted to own a brewery. Together, we made DilliGAF.”

The couple repurposed a 32-year-old building at 940 Bald Hill Church Road, which previously housed Bobtown Market. “I saw this for sale and took the jump,” Dave said.

Transforming the interior was a formidable task, though. “We had to put in a handicapped ramp, an extra door, two bathrooms, new plumbing and had to build a bar,” Dave said Wednesday, during a telephone interview with the couple.

The foot rail at the bar was a train rail manufactured in 1926. The rail had been on a bridge at ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Shadow Grove Brewing to launch new brewpub in North Hollywood
Shadow Grove Brewing, a San Fernando-based brewery known for small-batch and experimental beers, is preparing to open a new brewpub called Where the Creatures Sleep at Shadow Grove in North Hollywood at 5249 Lankershim Boulevard, WhatNow reported on November 14.

The company’s potential second location is set to move into the former home of District Pub, according to a liquor license application filed by co-owners Ron Dembowski and Tom Clark. Although it’s unclear whether a taproom will be included, the duo has applied for a Type 23 Small Beer Manufacturer license, which is typically issued to small breweries that can sell their beer on-site and may serve food. Once open, Where the Creatures Sleep at Shadow Grove will bring Shadow Grove’s evolving beer lineup and immersive storytelling environment to North Hollywood.

Founded by longtime friends Dembowski and Clark, Shadow Grove Brewing combines a passion for beer, darts, and world-building with a commitment to crafting high-quality, innovative beers. The original San Fernando location operates a 2,600-square-foot standalone building with indoor and outdoor seating, offering a design that encourages guests to explore the brewery’s imaginative, narrative-driven concept.

Where the Creatures Sleep at Shadow Grove represents the company’s first expansion outside San Fernando. Permit filings suggest ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Old Bridge Planning Board approves plans for a microbrewery
The Old Bridge Planning Board has approved plans for a microbrewery, restaurant, event space and bridal suites adjacent to the Hampton Inn at Route 9 and Spring Valley Road, NJ.com reported on November 16.

Hook Mountain Associates received approval for the project, which will include a new 9,790-square-foot building next to the existing hotel.

The first floor will house a brewery and restaurant, while the second floor will feature event space and two bridal suites, according to architect Michael Testa.

Testa said the board felt there is a need for this type of business in the area.

The board initially had concerns about parking, but those concerns were addressed through traffic engineer testimony, Testa said.

The building will feature a stucco façade designed to match the adjacent building.

The township requested modifications at ground level to ensure the building clearly resembles a microbrewery and restaurant.

Testa said he hopes the structure will be complete within 18 to 24 months.

Brewery news USA, OH: DankHouse Brewing Company bringing its beers to Columbus
A beloved Licking County brewery is making its move into the capital city. Newark-based DankHouse Brewing Company is bringing its bold IPAs and fruited sours to Columbus, The Columbus Dispatch reported on November 17.

DankHouse Industries will open its second location in the Old Towne East neighborhood. The husband-and-wife team of Josh and Heather Lange teased the announcement in a Nov. 15 Instagram reel, two days before their 8th anniversary.

The reel also mentions Square Roots Restaurant Group — the team behind the popular Shakedown concept — suggesting the food service component will be a critical part of the new venue.

The post hints at 901 Oak St. as the likely site for the new location.

Founded in 2017 at 161 Forry St., in Newark, DankHouse is known for pairing craft beer with live music and laid-back games.

Brewery news USA, FL: Mathieson Brewing gearing up to take former Doc’s Hop Shop facility in Pensacola
While downtown Pensacola brewery Doc’s Hop Shop closed its doors in September at 500 E. Heinberg St., a new family-owned and operated brewery is already gearing up to take its place, the Pensacola News Journal reported on November 16.

The Mathieson family is working to transform the space into a warm-toned, family-friendly atmosphere filled with an interactive Dartsee dart room, social games, rotating food trucks and the star of the show, the custom house-made brews.

The brewery will be owned and operated by Ray Mathieson and his wife, Ashley Mathieson, their son, Chandler Mathieson, who will serve as their brewer, and Sarah Fehre, who will handle their marketing.

Since they signed on the dotted line for the brewery in October, they have been hard at work reimaging the space. While they hope to serve some guest brews by Thanksgiving, they don't expect their renovation to be complete until next spring.

“When you come in this the tap room, this will be where you can come in and watch a game on TV, or whatever we got going on that room," Ray explained as he showed off the brewery. "In there will be more of a speakeasy feel, leather couches, warm, and we're going to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Rogue Ales & Spirits suddenly closes operations in Newport and all its restaurants
Rogue Ales & Spirits closed its operations in Newport and all its restaurants — including the recently opened Rogue Salem Public House — suddenly on Nov. 14, the Statesman Journal reported on November 14.

The Lincoln Chronicle reported that the 37-year-old business owed $545,000 in back rent to the Port of Newport and up to $30,000 in taxes to Lincoln County.

The Rogue Salem Public House opened at the former Gilgamesh Brewing "The Woods" location in West Salem this spring.

It was the sixth brewpub Rogue had opened since its founding in 1988. Four remained, including the West Salem location, an Astoria location and a Portland location.

Employees reported receiving no prior warning about the closures and were suddenly without jobs.

Carinna Stanton, a manager at the West Salem location, told The Oregonian an all-employee message announcing the closures went out at 8 a.m.

“There was no warning, no heads up, just an announcement that said we were going to be paid until the end of today,” she said. “They wished everyone well ... two weeks before Thanksgiving.”

Brewery news USA, CT: Almost Famous Brewing to close its doors in late December
Almost Famous Brewing Co. is planning to close its doors in late December, the Patch reported on November 14.

The business, which is known for its beer, food trucks, car shows and live music, announced the decision Friday morning on Facebook.

Its last day of operations will be on Sunday, Dec. 28, according to the announcement.

The business’ owners said they came to the decision “after lengthy deliberation and reflection.”

“We want to thank each one of you for making our journey exciting and rewarding,” they said.

Business will continue as usual until then, and management encouraged customers to still come and enjoy its food trucks, music and upcoming calendar events through Dec. 28. Several bands are still scheduled to play, and there are open mic and jam sessions.

The business will honor reservations for private events which have already been booked. Customers with questions are urged to contact the business.

“We continue to explore different ideas and options for the brewery but can’t guarantee where it will take us,” the announcement said. “We have many things to consider and evaluate with this incredibly hard decision.”

The business invited customers to join them for the brewery’s “final cheers.”

“We met so many amazing people and made many new friends ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: Happy Basset Brewing Co to close its doors after nine years in business
After nine years, Happy Basset Brewing Co on 29th street in Topeka will be closing its doors, ksnt.com reported on November 16.

27 News talked to one bartender who tells us what he will miss most about the location.

Brewery news Japan & India: Kirin Holdings in talks to exit crisis-hit Bira 91
Japan’s Kirin Holdings, the largest investor in Bira 91 maker B9 Beverages, is in talks with founder Ankur Jain to exit the crisis-hit company, several people familiar with the matter told ET.

Kirin, one of Japan’s top three liquor companies alongside Asahi and Suntory, held a 20.1% stake in B9 Beverages as of June 2025, ahead of Jain’s 17.8%. When Kirin first invested in 2021, it was viewed as a long-term backer. But the company has since reconsidered its global strategy and is looking to divest some alcoholic beverage assets. The company has also hired EY to sell the debt it provided to B9 Beverages in two tranches.

Kirin initially invested about $30 million in January 2021 through a mix of debt and equity. It provided another loan last year along with Tiger Pacific. Alongside Kirin, major investors in B9 Beverages include Peak XV with a 14.6% stake and Sofina with 6.4%. The remaining shares are held by family offices and financial investors, reported ET.

B9 Beverages has been under severe pressure after a major business disruption last year. The company changed its legal name to ‘B9 Beverages Limited’ from ‘B9 Beverages Private Limited’ as part of its IPO plans. The shift required ...More info on site

Brewery news Italy: Assobirra calls for a reduction in beer excise duties
Budget law time and Italy’s Assobirra is back to call for a reduction in excise duties, last year achieved only for small breweries, to allow increased investments in a sector that is not losing its growth potential, in the face, however, of consumption that has been falling for a couple of years after a period of strong growth, Il Sole 24 Ore reported on November 17.

The request is to reduce excise duty on beer from 2.99 to 2.97 euro per hectolitre and Grado Plato, with an estimated cost of 4.7 million euro in 2026; according to Assobirra "a limited but strategic investment to support a sector that generates widespread wealth and skilled employment", recalling that "the industry generates 10.4 billion euros of shared value, employs around 112 thousand people and, to date, each production worker creates 31 jobs along the supply chain. In ten years, beer has produced 92 billion in wealth and 24 thousand new jobs, contributing around 4 billion euro a year to general taxation, of which 1.5 billion in VAT and 689 million in excise duties in 2024'.

In the last two years, however, there has been a decline in all parameters, aggravated by the increase in excise ...More info on site

Brewery news Democratic Republic of Congo: Heineken transfers brewery in war-hit eastern Congo to Mauritian firm
Heineken has agreed to transfer its brewery in Bukavu, the second largest city in war-hit eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, to a Mauritian company for 1 euro, the Dutch brewer said in a statement on November 19, after losing operational control of the facility earlier this year.

The handover of the brewery to Synergy Ventures Holdings Ltd is expected to be completed by the end of the year, the statement said.

The decision was "driven by a humanitarian objective to safeguard jobs and livelihoods, maintain vital community services and prevent misuse of the facility in a volatile security environment," it said.

Rwanda-backed M23 rebels staged a lightning advance in eastern Congo this year, seizing the region's largest city Goma in January, followed by Bukavu in February. The fighting has killed thousands of people and displaced hundreds of thousands more.

Rwanda has long denied helping M23 and says its forces act in self-defence.

The U.S., Qatar and African mediators are trying to broker a peace deal that would attract Western investments to the region, especially its minerals sector.

In June, Heineken said armed personnel had taken control of its facilities in Bukavu and elsewhere in the region. The company had previously said the Bukavu facilities employed around ...More info on site

Brewery news Thailand: Thailand tightens alcohol rules
People in Thailand wanting to quench their thirst with an afternoon tipple risk steep fines from Nov 8 under amended alcohol control legislation that strengthens enforcement and significantly tightens restrictions around marketing and advertising, the Straits Times reported on November 8.

Alcohol sales in Thailand have been banned at most retail outlets and supermarkets between the hours of 2pm and 5pm since 1972, but changes to The Alcoholic Beverage Control Act that take effect on Nov 8 now mean individuals can be fined 10,000 baht (S$402) or more for drinking or being served alcoholic beverages during prohibited times or in prohibited places.

Some media reports also say the prohibition runs from midnight to 11am.

Although there are exemptions for licensed entertainment venues, hotels, certified establishments in tourist areas and airports offering international flights, the onus has been shifted to consumers, and the tightened laws also prohibit advertising of alcoholic beverages unless the content is purely factual.

The use of celebrities, influencers or public figures to promote alcoholic beverages for commercial purposes is also banned.

The new regulations will have an adverse effect on restaurants because it is the customer that is now “restricted” by the stipulated sale hours, said Mr Chanon Koetcharoen, president of the ...More info on site
