Australia: Shoppers buying less liquor but demand more value
|
Australia’s liquor shoppers are drinking less but demanding more value, according to new research from Shop! ANZ and Vypr.
The Australian Liquor: What Shoppers Want Instore Now report shows 47 per cent of consumers have reduced or stopped alcohol consumption in the past year, signalling a shift toward selective, value-driven drinking.
While cost-of-living pressures remain the biggest factor (58 per cent), health and wellness motivations (49 per cent) are also shaping long-term behaviour.
Despite reduced consumption, wine (56 per cent), beer (53 per cent) and spirits (51 per cent) remain close in popularity, creating a highly competitive retail environment.
Carla Bridge, GM at Shop! ANZ, said shoppers are now prioritising both value and flavour.
“Australians choose their alcohol based on occasion, mood or price. But taste is still the decisive factor for wine (78 per cent), beer (71 per cent) and spirit (68 per cent) drinkers,” she said.
“Almost two-thirds (66 per cent) say price is the most important factor in bottle shops, outweighing brand story, packaging or provenance.”
Brand loyalty continues to weaken, particularly in wine and spirits.
Only 22 per cent of wine shoppers buy the same brand consistently, and 72 per cent of spirit drinkers rotate between brands based on availability, price or flavour

South Korea: Terra beer sets record for sales in South Korea
|
Hite Jinro's beer Terra set a record for sales at the fastest pace, surpassing 1 million boxes in 39 days since its launch in March 2019, Maeil Business Newspaper reported on November 24.
Terra used 100% clean malt. For the cleanliness of malt, the main ingredient in beer, we tested all malt worldwide and used clean malt from Australia, the number one air quality country.
Since 2019, as part of clean activities, we have been working with eco-friendly fashion brand PleatsMama to promote value consumption by conducting clean collaborations with university students.
In addition, Terra became the first beer in Korea to win NON-GMO certification for the fourth consecutive year at "NON-GMO PROJUSTMENT," a global non-profit organization established in the U.S. This means that naturally cultivated and harvested seeds were used as raw materials, not genetically modified crops. It was verified as a non-genetic modified material after seven months of screening to obtain certification.
Terra uses 100% carbonic acid generated during the fermentation process without any other carbonic acid infusion. You can feel carbonated without artificial tingling.

Germany & South Korea: Paulaner switches South Korea distribution to Heineken
|
Paulaner Brewery has lined up a change of distribution partner in South Korea in time for the start of 2026, Global Drinks Intel reported on November 25.
The German brewer will transition in the country from Hitejinro to Heineken’s domestic unit, a move it said was “not due to operational issues but part of a long-term internal strategy”. Paulaner, which is part-owned by Heineken, expects the change to create closer alignment between the two businesses and streamline its international routes to market.
Heineken holds a 30% stake in the Paulaner Brewery Group, while Schörghuber Unternehmensgruppe owns the remaining 70%.
“This was not an easy decision for us,” said Paulaner CEO Jörg Biebernick. “We achieved a great deal together with Hitejinro.”
Heineken Korea said it plans to use its experience in premium imported beer to support Paulaner’s next phase of growth in the market.
Founded in 1634 in Munich, Paulaner is one of Germany’s best-known traditional brewers. The company produces a portfolio that includes Paulaner Weissbier, Münchner Hell, Salvator and other classic styles exported to 70 markets worldwide.
Last week, Heineken agreed to transfer ownership of its brewery in Bukavu, in the eastern part of the embattled Democratic Republic of Congo.

Canada: CMBTC releases its 2026–27 Recommended Barley Varieties List
|
|
The Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) released its 2026–27 Recommended Barley Varieties List on November 24 to support growers as they plan for the 2026 season.
The Recommended Barley Varieties List shows where growers and end-users are aligning as the market evolves.
AAC Synergy remains the leading variety, accounting for 35 per cent of seeded acres in 2025 and maintains broad acceptance among maltsters and brewers.
Newer varieties like AAC Connect and CDC Fraser are gaining traction with growers and processors seeing strong performance and long-term supply potential.
With growing interest in newer varieties, CDC Copeland—the oldest variety on the list—continues to decline.
The CMBTC develops the list with input from maltsters, brewers, exporters, seed companies and growers.
It says growers planning for the 2026 season should check with their grain buyers or malt barley buyers to ensure their variety choice aligns with market opportunities.
