Brewery news USA, OH: Starflyer Brewing Co. ready to open its doors in Canton
Starflyer Brewing Co. is ready to open in Canton, The Repository reported on November 27.

The brewery, located at 500 Cleveland Ave. NW downtown, announced on social media that its first day will be Dec. 3 — the same day as Canton's Light Up Downtown festivities.

"YES we are aware that our first week open will occur during both Light Up Downtown and First Friday," the brewery posted Nov. 26 on Facebook. "YES we are aware of the chaos that will ensue. But I guess to that we’re saying 'bring it.' We have our DORA cups, and a phenomenal space to come in from the cold for a while. We’re basically all set."

The brewery — which is using a two-barrel brewing system — will be open from 4 to 10 p.m. Dec. 3, Dec. 4 and Dec. 5; and 1 to 10 p.m. Dec. 6.

Brewer Andrew Archer, his wife Bailey, and her brother Ethan Comfort founded Starflyer. Archer previously brewed at HiHO Brewing Co. in Cuyahoga Falls.

“We’re excited about this location,” Archer told the Canton Repository in September. “It’s close to the action downtown, with good parking and room to grow.”

The name Starflyer was inspired during lightning bug season and is meant ...More info on site

Brewery news Mexico: Heineken’s Baja California plant becomes its first to meet long-term water balance goals
Heineken México is touting its water management programs as its Baja California plant has become the beer company’s first to meet long-term water balance goals, the Mexico News Daily reported on November 24.

Last week, Heineken Mexico CEO Oriol Bonaclocha announced the Tecate Brewery’s water balance achievement, explaining that it was replenishing nature with water in an equal amount to what it uses to make its product.

“The Tecate plant has achieved water balance, which means that all the water we use to make our beers is being returned,” said Oriol Bonaclocha.

Heineken’s “Delivering a Better World” sustainability strategy seeks to integrate economic growth with responsible practices, including the company’s commitment to water efficiency.

“A company’s economic growth does not have to be disconnected from growth that is sustainable and responsible,” Bonaclocha said.

Heineken México Sustainability Director Inti Pérez said the goal is for all operations located in water-stressed areas to replenish 100% of the water used in making its beers.

Speaking at an event linked to the Colorado River Basin restoration project, Bonaclocha said the 80-year-old Tecate plant is the first Heineken plant in Latin America to achieve water balance.

“All the water we use to build and brew our beers is being returned,” Bonaclocha said ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Scotty’s Bierwerks in Cape Coral announces sudden closing
The surprising news spread quickly around Cape Coral.

Scotty’s Bierwerks, the only brewery in the Cape, is unexpectedly closing. And soon.

“It is with profound sadness, and the heaviest of hearts, that we must announce we are closing our doors indefinitely at the end of the day this Friday, November 28th,” a post on its Facebook page read.

Scotty’s has been part of the community since owner Scott Melick opened the popular brewery off Pondella Road in March 2017.

“It's so much more than just a brewery; it is a home away from home,” the post continued. “If you know, you know.”

It hosted trivia nights, celebrations in a private room off the taproom, brought in food truck after food truck, had live music, yoga classes and so much more. And Brewmaster, the brewery’s photogenic cat, always drew attention whenever it popped up.

“We’ve watched our community flourish,” the post read. “We are truly all family now… We are devastated to close these doors knowing we will not share these daily moments with you any longer, but the memories… they are all we have left, and they will live on.”

Melick was a home brewer long before Scotty’s opened.

“I started the brewery because I could make better ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Port Jeff Brewing Company to close its doors by the end of the year
Port Jeff Brewing Company, a longtime staple of Long Island’s craft beer scene, will close its doors by the end of the year, owner Mike Philbrick confirmed on November 26 to Greater Long Island.

Philbrick, who has operated the brewery and taproom for the past 15 years, said the decision comes as both the craft beer landscape and the economy have shifted.

“It made a lot of sense to just move on before we get to a spot where we really have to make a tough decision,” he said.

For Philbrick, what he’ll miss most isn’t the beer itself but the community that built up around it.

“It’s been a staple in Port Jefferson. The music events, the gatherings, the milestones — people met their husbands here, their wives here. There are just so many connections,” he said.

Philbrick said most patrons have been “incredibly supportive” of his decision.

The brewery will remain open through the holidays, including its annual Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning and during the town’s upcoming Dickens Festival. Philbrick anticipates hosting a final closing event some time in December.

After closing, Philbrick plans to step away from the brewery business and return to “a civilian life,” he said with a smile. He has ...More info on site

Brewery news Burkina Faso: Burkina Faso state brewery resumes operations after 17 years of inactivity
The Société nouvelle Brasserie du Faso, a state-owned brewery outside Ouagadougou, has resumed operations after 17 years of inactivity, Ecofin Agency reported on November 27.

The plant, located in the commune of Komsilga, was inaugurated on November 25 by President Ibrahim Traoré, alongside several members of the government and local officials. The relaunch required 17.9 billion CFA francs, or about $31.7 million, to modernize the facility. With an installed capacity of 600,000 hectolitres, the brewery will produce two brands, Braf’or and Brafaso.

The reopening marks a new chapter for a company that struggled for nearly two decades. Founded in 2004, SN Brafaso shut down four years later. The state acquired the plant in 2012 for 40 billion CFA francs, but rehabilitation work only began in earnest in March 2024, according to a government statement.

The brewery returns to a market that looks very different from the one it left. Brakina, the longtime leader and a subsidiary of the Castel Group, has strengthened its grip. Another competitor has emerged as well: Libs Brasserie Sarl, owned by Indian businessman Vaswani Lakhi. The company set up a 3.9-hectare facility in Gampéla in early 2019 with a capacity of 430,000 hectoliters and now sells two brands, Marina ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Asahi says personal details of 1.52 million customers may have been leaked in cyberattack, delays release of Q3 results
Japan's Asahi Group on November 27 said it aims to normalise logistical operations by February after a cyberattack in late September forced widespread suspension, though not all products will be available to ship by that time, Reuters reported. The beverage maker, known for its flagship Super Dry beer, also said the personal details of 1.52 million customers may have been leaked in the September 29 attack.

Information on 114,000 contacts and 275,000 current and former employees and their families may also have been exposed, none of which has appeared online, Asahi said.

The attack caused widespread outage in areas including order processing, shipping and call centres as Asahi became the latest victim among companies worldwide targeted by hackers.

Earlier this year, automaker Jaguar Land Rover was forced to close factories while retailer Marks and Spencer had to suspend online orders.

Asahi said it pushed the release of its July-September earnings scheduled for November 12 to more than 50 days after the end of the quarter, extending postponement from 45 days.

"We can't avoid forecasting a deterioration in our results but our mid-to-long-term management plan is unchanged," CEO Atsushi Katsuki said at a press briefing in Tokyo.

The disruption saw restaurants, bars and stores in Japan run low ...More info on site

Hops news Brazil: Technology boosts hop production in Brazil
Despite being the third-largest producer and consumer of beer worldwide, Brazil depends almost entirely on hop imports. Less than 1% of the ingredient responsible for the bitterness, aroma, and flavor of beer is grown locally. However, a new project involving Brazilian scientists and producers in the Vale do Ribeira region of the state of São Paulo seeks to change this scenario. The project aims to make domestic hop production more efficient and viable while boosting the development of new bioproducts, Agencia FAPESP reported on November 26.

The project was born within the Center for Research on Biodiversity Dynamics and Climate Change (CBioClima), one of the Research, Innovation, and Dissemination Centers (RIDCs) supported by FAPESP and based at São Paulo State University (UNESP). The project is investing in supercritical extraction with carbon dioxide (CO₂), a technology that is already well-established in countries such as Germany and the United States. This method efficiently extracts aromatic and bioactive compounds from hops, reducing logistics costs and improving beer quality.

“Brazilian hops are normally sold in pellets [dehydrated and pressed flowers] to breweries. However, with this technology, hops can be marketed in oil form, which, in addition to logistical gains, yields beer production results that are far ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Diageo Belfast brewery workers vote to strike ahead of Christmas
Workers have voted to strike at Diageo’s production plant in Belfast but the drinks giant insists there will be no shortages of Guinness ahead of Christmas, Yahoo Finance reported on November 28.

Unite announced on November 28 around 90 workers have agreed to walk out for eight days from 5 December after what the union called an “inadequate pay offer”. The Belfast facility on Marshalls Road is used as a canning plant.

Guinness fans may well reminisce, harking back to last December when Diageo experienced an upsurge in sales partly linked to key sporting events, resulting in weekly limits imposed on supplies to UK customers.

Unite regional officer Michael Keenan said the Belfast factory “is the world’s biggest producer of Guinness Zero and claimed the strike action "will severely disrupt production lines in the run-up to Christmas”. Diageo played down those claims.

“There will be no disruption to the supply of Guinness or Guinness 0.0 over the Christmas period,” a Diageo spokesperson said via a statement. “We have contingency plans in place to manage any potential impact at our can packaging site in Belfast.”

Unite added in a statement staff in Belfast are demanding a “substantial” pay increase to close the gap with what Diageo ...More info on site

Brewery news The Dominican Republic: AB InBev to brew Corona beer in the Dominican Republic
Dominican President Luis Abinader met with executives from Anheuser-Busch InBev, producers of Corona beer, who announced that the Dominican Republic has been chosen as a new production site for the global brand, The Dominican Today reported on November 28.

The decision represents a major foreign investment and reflects strong confidence in the country’s legal stability, economic performance, and institutional strengthening in recent years.

Abinader congratulated Jean Jereissati, CEO of AB InBev’s Middle Americas Zone; Fabián Suárez, president of CND; and executives Luis Álvarez and Jochi Pérez. He emphasized that investments of this scale are possible thanks to the nation’s climate of economic, legal, and social stability. The establishment of Corona beer production, he noted, will drive economic growth and create new jobs.

The visit highlights the strong collaboration between the public and private sectors and reaffirms Anheuser-Busch InBev’s confidence in the Dominican Republic. The meeting took place at the National Palace.

Brewery news Australia: Industry body calls on government to extend beer tax freeze to tap spirits
Spirits industry body Spirits & Cocktails Australia announced on November 26 a proposed amendment to the Excise Tariff Amendment (Draught Beer) Bill 2025 that would extend it to include tap spirits served in Australian venues, the Drinks Trade reported.

The proposal follows on from the start of the two-year beer tax freeze at the time of the August bi-annual increase.

Since then, two independent members of parliament have moved new amendments advocating for its extension, with Member for Kooyong Monique Ryan seeking a permanent draught beer excise freeze and member for Bradfield Nicolette Boele calling for a freeze on the indexation of packaged product made by Independent Brewers Association members.

The proposed change simply calls on the addition of “and tap spirits” after the two instances beer is mentioned. This would include all bulk containers of spirits and premixed drinks designed to be connected to tap systems and would exclude standard bottles of full-strength spirits and packaged RTDs.

“Tap spirits are a growing part of the product mix for pubs, clubs and small bars and appeal to a wide variety of customer demographics,” said the newly-appointed Executive Director of Spirits & Cocktails Australia Steven Fanner.

“Spirits are taxed more heavily than beer or wine, and ...More info on site

Brewery news Taiwan: Taiwan imposes anti-dumping duties on China-made beer and hot-rolled steel
Taiwan has imposed anti-dumping duties on China-made beer and hot-rolled steel for five years after a probe found the domestic industry had suffered “substantial harm,” the Ministry of Finance said on November 27.

An investigation was launched in March following complaints of unfair competition and levies were applied in July for an initial period of four months.

The finance ministry yesterday said that it and the Ministry of Economic Affairs had “finally determined that the companies involved had engaged in dumping, and that such dumping had caused substantial harm to the domestic industry.”

Companies cited by the ministry included the Chinese subsidiaries of Budweiser and Kirin beer.

The levies on Chinese-made beer would range from 19.13 percent to 51.94 percent, while for steel they would be either 16.1 percent or 20.15 percent.

They would be in place for five years, starting from July.

Some beer importers likely knew “that foreign exporters were engaging in dumping likely to cause harm” between April 4 and July 2, and those goods would also be hit with duties, the ministry said.

China was the biggest source of beer imports to Taiwan last year, Bloomberg News reported previously, with shipments topping US$125 million.

Taiwan currently has 13 cases of anti-dumping duties on products, ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Diageo India reports 93 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
Diageo India (United Spirits Ltd) has reported a 93 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions since 2020 in its fourth annual ESG index, achieving 99 per cent renewable energy use well ahead of its 2030 targets, the Press Trust of India reported on November 26.

The Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) index, aligned with Global Reporting Initiative standards, UN Sustainable Development Goals and Sustainability Accounting Standards Board disclosures, covers fiscal year 2024-2025 and highlights water conservation, low-carbon initiatives and community impacts in water-stressed regions.

Jitendra Mahajan, Diageo India's Chief Supply and Sustainability Officer, said the agenda builds a business that "grows responsibly, leads with integrity and creates long-term value".

Brewery news South Korea: Lotte Chilsung to stop producing Cloud and Crush draft beer
South Korea’s Lotte Chilsung Beverage will stop producing Cloud and Crush draft beer products. The move is interpreted as a result of the prolonged slump in the entertainment market and the high cost burden unique to premium beer, Maeil Business Newspaper reported on November 26.

According to the liquor industry on the 26th, Lotte Chilsung Beverage recently confirmed the end of production of two draft beer products, Cloud 20L and Crush 20L. The product was mainly supplied to restaurant and entertainment channels such as pubs, restaurants, and chicken restaurants, and the company plans to complete the reorganization of production facilities and manpower relocation as early as the first half of next year.

The decision is limited to draft beer products. Lotte Chilsung Beverage said, "We will reorganize our beer business and focus on our main products to repay them with better products and services," adding, "We will operate canned and bottled products the same as before, and speed up the strengthening of functional beer such as non-alcoholic."

The worsening profitability is behind the withdrawal of draft beer lines. Cloud is a premium lager that uses 100% malt (mac) and 100% aroma hops, and the cost burden is higher than that of ordinary products. ...More info on site
