Mexico: 80% of Mexicans choose beer over other alcohol, survey shows
|
According to a survey conducted by the global consulting firm Appinio, 80% of Mexicans over the age of 18 will choose beer over other alcoholic beverages in 2024, FreshlyBottled.com reported on November 17.
This trend is even more pronounced among millennials (27-42 years old), reaching 88%, followed by Generation X (43-57 years old) and baby boomers (58-65 years old).
Customers are seeking new flavors, such as Indio Agave beer, which offers a unique experience: fusing the great taste of Indio beer with a delicate touch of blue agave.
The survey confirms that incorporating agave into beer not only enriches the flavor with sweet and distinctive notes but also connects with Mexico's cultural identity.

Canada & Saudi Arabia: Canada resumes barley exports to Saudi Arabia
|
Canadian barley growers have another market to sell to in 2025-26, The Western Producer reported on November 28.
Canada shipped 72,000 tonnes of the crop to Saudia Arabia in September, the first exports to that market since 2016-17.
The country stopped buying Canadian grain in 2018 in response to a diplomatic dispute between the two countries after Canada’s foreign affairs minister criticized the arrest of activists in Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia was once the world’s biggest barley importer. The Middle Eastern country often bought eight to nine million tonnes of the cereal crop in any given year, with sales peaking at 11.2 million tonnes in 2015-16.
However, it is importing far less these days. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is forecasting 3.8 million tonnes in 2025-26.
Peter Watts, managing director of the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre, said the Saudi government used to heavily subsidize imports of feed barley.
The country’s large Bedouin population regularly fed the crop to their sheep and goats.
However, that source of demand has subsided.
“They realized that buying raw barley and feeding it to the animals is not the most efficient way to feed livestock,” he said.
The government started encouraging importers to bring in compound feeds instead, which have a more balanced

USA, WI: Nicolet Ale Works to move into a permanent new home
|
A De Pere brewery will move into a permanent new home that will combine production, a taproom and an outdoor beer garden in one place, the Green Bay Press-Gazette reported on December 1.
Nicolet Ale Works, a nano-brewery (very small-scale brewery), which operates at the N.E.W. Kitchen Co-op, 500 Main Ave., will expand operations at 301 Main Ave., the current building of Credo, a higher education consulting firm. Jeremy Voss and Ben Rank, owners of the brewery, said they expect to open by fall of 2026.
Voss and Rank are nearing final contracts with designers and brewery equipment specialists to begin construction. When it opens in 2026, Nicolet Ale Works will be downtown De Pere’s first brewery.
The duo announced the news in a joint news conference on Nov. 19, with the presence of several public figures including Mayor James Boyd; David Vander Bloomen, CEO of the De Pere Chamber of Commerce; and Tina Quigley, executive director of Definitely De Pere.
Rank said they brew many different types of beer, including stouts, ales and IPAs. But, as they both have German heritage, they have a lot of different German and Belgian styles. They will start with a flagship of four, but increase it to

Canada, ON: Workers reach final deal as Diageo closes Crown Royal plant in Amherstburg
|
The union representing workers at the closing Diageo Crown Royal plant in Amherstburg says it’s reached a final deal for its members who will be out of a job next February.
Members of Unifor Local 200 met Sunday, November 30 to ratify the company’s final offer. That means the plant closure plan is irreversible, says John D’Agnolo, Local 200 president. The roughly 160 unionized workers there have the option to leave now, or stay until the plant closes.
He says that workers voted 89 per cent in favour of the deal on November 30.
Premier Doug Ford has said the provincial government will protest the closure by pulling Crown Royal off its shelves at the LCBO next year. The union urged the province to "fight like hell" to keep the plant open.
But D’Agnolo says he believes the closure was always a done deal.
“I think the decision was already made, to be quite frank with you,” he said.
“We were hoping with the loss of sales that they'd look at it different, and they did not … They had made their mind up and they were not changing it.”
For its part, the company said Crown Royal whisky will continue to be mashed, distilled and aged

Canada: Oldest brewing school in the Americas relocating from the US to Canada
|
The Siebel Institute of Technology, the oldest brewing school in the Americas (established in 1872), is officially relocating its operations from Chicago, Illinois (USA) to Montreal, Québec (Canada) effective January 1, 2026, The New School reported on November 25.
The new location address will be 3035 rue Sainte-Catherine E, Montréal (Québec), near Molson’s original brewery site (1786), the oldest brewery in North America. Siebel will be co-located with the new Lallemand Baking Academy and Application Technology Training Facility.
This move marks a significant milestone in Siebel’s evolution, aligning with the changing dynamics of the global brewing industry and the need for the business to remain competitive and sustainable far into the future. The decision follows a comprehensive review of operational costs, industry trends, increased student visa challenges to enter the United States and is fully supported by Siebel’s longstanding partners and stakeholders.
“Lallemand has proudly owned the Siebel Institute since 2000 and has consistently supported its autonomy as the center for world-class brewing education," said Antoine Chagnon, CEO of Lallemand Inc. "we are excited about the opportunities this relocation brings for the future of brewing education."
Throughout its history, Siebel Institute has maintained a reputation for excellence in brewing science and education. During the

USA, MN: Schram Haus Brewery to close its doors at the end of the year
|
A Chaska brewery has announced it will close its doors at the end of the year, Bring Me The News reported on November 29.
Schram Haus Brewery said the cost of running a small brewery at 3700 Chaska Blvd. has become "unsustainable for us moving forward."
"This decision did not come easily, but it is a necessary one," owners Aaron and Ashley Schram announced on social media, adding: "We are incredibly proud of what has been built on this bluff, and we’re deeply grateful to the community that has supported us. We’ve been through a lot together."
The Schrams opened Schram Haus in 2018 on a bluff overlooking Chaska Creek, just to the southwest of downtown Chaska. It was an addition to the couple's 32-acre winery, Schram Vineyards, which they opened in Waconia five years earlier.
The couple say Schram Haus' beer will live on at its Waconia winery, though details on the when and how will follow later.
"We will remain open through the end of the year, and all scheduled December events are still on, including the Holiday Haus Market, live music, comedy night, trivia, and bingo," the couple said. "We hope you’ll join us as we celebrate this final month together."

UK: Alcohol duty rise in line with RPI draws strong criticism from producers, trade associations
|
The UK government’s decision to raise alcohol duty in line with the Retail Price Index has drawn strong criticism from the country’s alcohol producers and trade associations, Vinetur reported on December 1.
The announcement came as part of the Autumn Budget, presented by Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves to the House of Commons on November 26. The new rates will take effect from February 1, 2026.
According to the government, the increase is intended to balance the economic contributions of alcohol producers and the hospitality sector with public health goals aimed at reducing alcohol-related harm. The policy paper released alongside the budget stated that all alcohol duty rates would be “uprated” with inflation, as measured by the RPI, which currently stands at 3.66%. This means consumers will see duty rise by 11 pence on a bottle of Prosecco, 13 pence on a bottle of red wine, and 38 pence on a bottle of gin.
The government also announced an uprating of Small Producer Relief discounts, but this has done little to ease concerns within the industry. Miles Beale, chief executive of The Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA), described the budget as “a death by a thousand cuts” for wine and

France: State of soft wheat and winter barley crop slightly down
|
The state of recently sown French soft wheat and winter barley crops declined slightly last week, though nearly all crops remained in good condition, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on November 28.
For soft wheat, France’s main cereal crop, 97 percent of emerged crops were rated as being in good or excellent condition by November 24, down from 98 percent a week earlier but well above the 87 percent recorded a year ago, the office said in a cereal report. For winter barley, the good/excellent rating fell to 96 percent from 98 percent the previous week but was still above 84 percent a year earlier. France, the European Union’s biggest grain producer, experienced its coldest spell of the autumn so far last week, with frosts across the country. However, traders said the negative Celsius temperatures were unlikely to have damaged crops.
Farmers are wrapping up sowing of soft wheat and winter barley, with planting 98 percent and 99 percent complete, respectively, by Monday, FranceAgriMer said. Sowing of durum wheat, the variety used for pasta, was 80 percent complete versus 69 percent a week earlier, it said.

UK: First report on winter crops shows very good prospects for winter wheat, barley, oats and oilseed rape
|
AHDB’s first report on the condition of crops for harvest 2026 shows very good prospects for winter wheat, barley, oats and oilseed rape in the UK.
Nationally, drilling conditions were much better than last year and drilling almost, with only 3% of winter wheat crops remaining to be drilled as of 24 November. Most crops have also emerged, and many have seen rapid development. A large carryover of nitrogen from fertiliser applied between April and June has been reported, which may have contributed to this rapid development so far. Management of dense, forward crops may be required if mild conditions persist throughout the winter.
An estimated 83% of the 2026 winter wheat crop was rated as in good or excellent condition by Monday 24 November 2025. Meanwhile, 89% of winter barley, 87% of winter oats and 82% of winter oilseed rape (WOSR) crops were also in good or excellent condition.
This comes in stark but very welcome contrast to last year, when wet weather delayed drilling and hampered early growth, especially for the main winter cereal crops. For example, at this point last year, with 18% of winter wheat crops still to be planted or emerge, just 44% of crops were rated as

South Korea: Hyundai Motor Securities lowers its target price for Hite Jinro
|
On November 28, Hyundai Motor Securities lowered its target price for Hite Jinro from 27,000 won to 25,000 won. The firm maintained its buy investment rating.
Ha Heeji, a researcher at Hyundai Motor Securities, stated, "A challenging business environment continues," explaining the decision.
In the third quarter, Hite Jinro posted sales of 669.5 billion won (a 2.4% decrease year-on-year) and operating profit of 54.4 billion won (a 22.5% decrease, with an operating margin of 8.1%). Researcher Ha analyzed, "Due to the overall slump in the alcoholic beverage market and unfavorable weather conditions, the results fell short of market expectations."
She further explained, "In particular, as demand was pulled forward in response to the beer price hike in the second quarter, Hite Jinro's beer sales volume appears to have declined by 9% in the third quarter. Due to the increased burden of fixed costs from the decrease in sales volume, profit in the beer division also fell by 49% year-on-year," she said, adding, "Soju sales volume is estimated to have risen by 2%, and the soju market share in the third quarter remains in the high 60% range."
The outlook for the fourth quarter also remains conservative. Researcher Ha stated, "While the domestic alcoholic beverage

Brazil: Dispute between Heineken and Ambev gains new momentum
|
The dispute between Heineken and Ambev at the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) regarding the market leader’s exclusivity contracts with bars has gained new momentum. On November 26, Heineken submitted new evidence to the authority accusing its competitor of violating the 15% exclusivity ceiling in central areas, Valor International reported.
According to the study, made public on the CADE’s website, one of the most critical areas is Leblon, in Rio de Janeiro, where exclusivity reportedly exceeded 60%. Ambev denies any irregularities and says it is complying with the agreement reached with the CADE.
Competition between the two giants has intensified, particularly in the premium segment. Moreover, next year is expected to be a strong one for beer consumption, with more favorable weather and an additional boost from the World Cup, which typically fills bars across the country.
The investigation into Ambev at the CADE was launched in March 2022 following a complaint by Heineken. The allegation was that Ambev was abusing its dominant position through exclusivity agreements in “cold channels,” which are points of sale offering cold beer for immediate consumption, such as bars and restaurants.
A Cease-and-Desist Commitment (TCC) was signed by Ambev at the end of 2023. The company was

Vietnam: Carlsberg Vietnam outlines new steps towards net-zero emissions
|
Carlsberg Vietnam has outlined new steps towards net-zero emissions at the Green Economy Forum 2025. The Danish brewer joined a panel on direct power purchase agreements to discuss how foreign investors can support Vietnam’s green transition, Vietnam Investment review reports.
Managing director Andrew Khan said Carlsberg Vietnam has used I-REC certified renewable electricity since 2022 and plans to join Vietnam’s DPPA scheme. The company is also preparing on-site solar projects to help reach net-zero production emissions by 2028, in line with Vietnam’s 2050 targets.
Carlsberg’s Phu Bai Brewery in Central Vietnam now runs on renewable electricity and biomass-powered steam. New equipment and automation have cut water use by 20 percent and energy consumption by 15 percent, while supporting goals of zero waste to landfill by 2025 and fully recyclable or reusable packaging by 2026.
Khan noted that long-term power purchase agreements are already central to Carlsberg Group’s strategy in Europe and Asia. He said DPPA in Vietnam can strengthen clean energy infrastructure, modernise the power market, and deepen technology and knowledge exchange between Vietnam and Europe.
Carlsberg Vietnam also highlighted its social programmes in Central Vietnam, home of the Huda brand. The company’s water and Tet initiatives have supported tens of thousands of people,

Africa: SCADS beer formally enters African market
|
SCADS, a European beer label recognised for its intense flavour profile and outdoors-inspired brand persona, has formally entered the African market, launching two strong beer variants to meet rising demand for premium imported beers, Food Business Middle East & Africa reported on November 28.
The expansion marks SCADS’ first push into East, West, and Central Africa, where imported brews are attracting new consumer segments, particularly younger legal-age drinkers seeking high-strength lifestyle brands.
The brand said the rollout reflects a strategic response to evolving preferences within Africa’s premium beer landscape.
The Africa launch introduces two products: SCADS 12%, a smooth, fuller-bodied formulation positioned for nightlife and social occasions, and SCADS 18%, a high-potency strong beer targeted at the premium extreme-strength category.
Both are brewed and packaged in Europe, featuring updated quality controls and shipping from European stock points to African import partners.
The company said the brand architecture has been adapted for African channel dynamics, including bars, clubs, entertainment venues, retail trade, and influencer-led campaigns. Marketing for the Africa entry builds on the global slogan “Born to Travel”, supported by lifestyle-driven can designs and experiential messaging.
SCADS’ announcement aligns with strong-beer momentum across several African economies. Markets including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda,

Pakistan: Murree Brewery restarts beer exports for the first time since prohibition imposed in 1977
|
Pakistan brewer Murree Brewery, the country’s oldest brewhouse, has restarted beer exports for the first time since a government prohibition was imposed in 1977. The Pakistani authorities granted Murree an exclusive licence earlier this year to export alcoholic beer to non-Muslim markets, thus ending a ban on alcoholic imports and exports that had endured for nearly five decades, Asia Brewers Network reported on November 24.
The permission renders Murree Brewery effectively the only Pakistani producer currently authorised to ship alcoholic beverages abroad. Even though export volumes remain modest, with the firm reports shipping around US $30,000 worth of beer overseas in September, the company has already dispatched shipments to Portugal and the United Kingdom, and has active orders pending for Japan. The brewer anticipates volumes to grow steadily as its international distribution network is built up.
The company has also been granted approval for a 10–15 % domestic price increase in recognition of its capacity investment and export expansion efforts.
Within Pakistan, Murree has long operated a highly constrained domestic business. In the Islamic republic of approximately 241 million people, alcohol sales are licensed only to non-Muslim consumers, a population numbering about nine million, and to a tightly regulated set of outlets with price
