UK: Alcohol free beer to be tracked for inflation for the first time
|
Alcohol free beer will be tracked for inflation in the UK for the first time after the Office for National Statistics added the product to its 2026 consumer price inflation basket, The Drinks Business reported on March 17.
According to the ONS, 27 items have been added to the Consumer Prices Index, including owner occupiers’ housing costs basket this year, while 19 items have been removed, bringing the total number of representative items to 760.
Among the additions are hummus, motorhomes, pet grooming services, dashboard cameras and alcohol-free beer.
The ONS explained that alcohol free beer has been included to reflect a part of the beer market that had not previously been directly represented in the basket. The product will contribute to a broader “beer, low and non alcoholic” consumption segment when inflation statistics are compiled.
Sales of alcohol-free beer have grown in recent years alongside a widening product range and greater shelf space in retail. The agency stated that adding the item helps ensure that price indices remain representative of current spending patterns.
The consumer price inflation basket functions as a model “shopping basket” of goods and services bought by households. Movements in the cost of this basket represent changes in inflation.

USA & Poland: Heineken launches sugar- and calorie-free non-alcoholic beer in the US and Poland
|
Heineken has launched a sugar- and calorie-free non-alcoholic beer in North America and Europe, Yahoo! Finance reported on March 16.
The brewer is launching Heineken 0.0 Ultimate in the US and Poland.
The launch follows a pilot of the product in Massachusetts and New Jersey in the US last year.
Heineken is planning to trial the beer in other markets including the Netherlands.
"We pioneered the US non-alcoholic beer category with the launch of Heineken 0.0 in 2019 and are continuing to grow and invest with our newest innovations," Maggie Timoney, the CEO of Heineken USA, said in a statement.
“Now, we’re raising the bar again. Heineken 0.0 Ultimate is our answer for the consumer who wants even more choice: world-class taste, zero alcohol, zero sugar, and zero calories, so you never have to compromise."
When asked to what extent Heineken had the rising use of GLP-1 medication in mind when it developed the Ultimate product, the group said: "Heineken 0.0 Ultimate represents our latest step in expanding the alcohol‑free category with great‑tasting options that meet evolving consumer preferences".
It added: "We continue to see strong global momentum behind alcohol‑free beer and remain committed to providing variety, taste, and quality across our portfolio."
The drink will be "line-priced

UK: Carlsberg Britvic brings Greek-style lager Mythos to the UK
|
Carlsberg Britvic is expanding its premium beer portfolio with the UK retail launch of Greek-style lager Mythos, as it looks to capitalise on growing demand for Mediterranean-inspired drinks, the Grocery Gazette reported on March 17.
The brand, which has long been popular with British holidaymakers, will land in Tesco stores and Booker depots from 18 March, before a wider rollout across grocery, convenience and impulse channels in September.
Positioned as the only Greek-inspired lager currently available in UK retail, Mythos is set to complement existing world beer ranges, where Spanish and Italian-style lagers have seen sustained growth in recent years.
Carlsberg Britvic said the launch taps into increasing consumer interest in Greek culture and cuisine, with 4.5 million Brits travelling to Greece last year and demand for Greek food rising by 17 per cent year on year.
Dharmesh Rana, brand director for premium brands at Carlsberg Britvic, said: “We’re seeing clear momentum in premium, world beers, with shoppers looking to trade up for authentic products with a compelling cultural story.
“Mythos is a leading Greek-style lager that brings something genuinely different to the world beer fixture, capturing the spirit of the Greek islands in a way that resonates strongly with UK shoppers.”
The supplier believes the

Nigeria: Nigerian Breweries, Guinness announce price hikes
|
The Nigerian Breweries (NB) Plc has announced an upward review in the prices of some products in its stock-keeping units (SKUs) to mitigate rising operational and input costs, The Cable reported on March 15.
In a notice to distributors, the company said the adjustments were driven by prevailing economic conditions that have significantly increased the cost of doing business.
NB, in a letter dated March 13 and signed by John Oloche Ademu, zonal business manager (west), said the new prices would take effect from March 20.
The company said the adjustment would apply to select SKUs, a unique identifier used to track inventory within a business.
The Nigerian Breweries is the producer of major alcoholic products like Star Lager, Gulder, Legend Extra Stout, Heineken, Goldberg, Life, Star Radler and others.
The brewer’s non-alcoholic portfolio includes Maltina, Amstel Malta, Fayrouz, Climax Energy drink, and Malta Gold.
“As the country’s economic landscape continues to evolve, we want to inform you about an upcoming price adjustment,” the company said.
“Due to increases in operational and input costs, we will be implementing a price increase on select SKUs, effective Friday March 20, 2026.”
The brewer said existing prices would be honoured for fully funded and confirmed orders placed in its system
