Ukraine: Carlsberg launches new canning line at Lviv Brewery
|
Danish brewing company Carlsberg Group has launched a new canning line at the Lviv Brewery in Ukraine, investing nearly €12 million (610 million UAH) in the project, the Odessa Journal reported on May 5.
This was reported by the Head of the Lviv Regional State Administration, Maksym Kozytskyi.
The opening was also attended by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Denmark to Ukraine, Thomas Lund-Sørensen, and the CEO of Carlsberg Group, Jacob Aarup-Andersen.
The canning line itself occupies 1,000 square meters on the brewery site. It consists of eight machines, with a maximum capacity of up to 40,000 cans (20,000 liters) per hour. The new line supports 0.33-liter and 0.5-liter can formats.
Among the key challenges during the launch, the company cited integrating the equipment into existing production facilities and extensive preparation of the workshop. The line was transported from Germany using 63 trucks, and up to 20 specialists were involved in the installation works.
Three employees work on the line in a single shift.
“Since this is a new type of production, the company supported staff retraining and training: a two-week in-person training program in Germany, followed by an online course for full mastery of canning technology,” Carlsberg Group said.

UK & Belgium: UK sees a return to the trend for Belgian beer
|
Belgian beer has shown resilience, despite facing economic pressures, increasing costs, and geopolitical instability, the style still continues to prosper. Jessica Mason looks into its resurgence for The Drinks Business (db).
In a move marked by bottles of Belgian beer brand Duvel going into Mitchells & Butlers’ Castle pubs this week and the rise in fruit-led brews experiencing growth and a sustained interest in premium Trappist classics, there are indications that drinkers are leaning in towards more European brews.
Speaking exclusively to the Drinks Business, James Clay & Sons’ Belgian beer category manager Joe Dick said: “Across the past 12 months we’ve seen significant growth in Belgian beer, thanks in no small part to our Belgian Beer Week, [which was held in the last week of February in 2025 and 2026].”
Explaining more about the returning trend, he revealed that “one of the most curious factors of this growth is that it isn’t restricted to one or two brands, all of our significant volume brands are in growth, and almost all of the others in the portfolio are too”.
Visit Flanders director for the UK and Ireland Andrew Daines told db: “It’s great news for discerning beer lovers that such an authentic and truly

UK: Heineken to invest more than £44 million into hundreds of its pubs across the UK
|
Heineken has announced a substantial investment exceeding £44 million into hundreds of its pubs across the UK, a move expected to create approximately 850 jobs, The Independent reported on May 4.
The Dutch brewing giant’s Star Pubs operation, which manages 2,350 sites nationwide, is undertaking this significant financial commitment despite a challenging period for the pub sector.
The industry has faced considerable pressure over the past year, grappling with escalating labour costs and increases in national insurance contributions.
Concurrently, consumer spending has been constrained by concerns over inflation and rising unemployment, further impacting pub revenues. However, pubs did receive additional business rates support from the government last month, aimed at alleviating some of these financial burdens.
Lawson Mountstevens, managing director of Star Pubs, indicated that the investment strategy is partly designed to bolster revenues and help the group navigate the recent "sustained increases in running costs".
This year, £44.5 million will be allocated to upgrades for 647 pubs. A notable 108 of these venues are earmarked for particularly significant cash injections, with each transformation costing at least £145,000.
Heineken clarified that while the majority of its pubs are group-owned, they are independently operated by local licensees. A key focus for this investment, particularly in the lead-up

Ireland: Heineken adding two new flavours to Heineken 0.0 portfolio in Ireland
|
Heineken Ireland is adding two new flavours to the Heineken 0.0 portfolio: Lemon Elderflower and Nectarine Juniper, Hospitality Ireland reported on May 5.
Heineken 0.0 has been the most popular brand in the fast-growing non-alcoholic drinks category in Ireland since its launch in 2018, and offering new flavour options to consumers is aimed at widening the occasions in which they can enjoy alcohol-free beer.
“Our research shows that Irish consumers are curious, adventurous, and increasingly eager to explore new taste profiles,” said Heineken Ireland marketing director Fiona Curtin.
“As pioneers and leaders in the alcohol-free sector, we are responding directly to that demand with something fresh, flavourful and innovative, while staying true to the signature Heineken taste that our customers know and love.”
Heineken has invested over €30 million in the alcohol-free category in Ireland since 2018 and continues to invest heavily in the sector.
Heineken 0.0 is currently available on draught at more than 3,000 hospitality outlets, and it also has nationwide retail distribution.
Sales of non-alcoholic beer increased by 25% in 2024, according to the most recent report from Drinks Ireland, and have increased by 150% over a five-year period.
“Our new Heineken 0.0 non-alcoholic flavoured beer serves consumers who want to embrace moderation while
