Brewery news UK: Premium cask beer brands proving “far more resilient” amid ongoing decline in wider cask category
Despite ongoing decline in the wider cask category, premium brands are proving “far more resilient”, Asahi UK marketing director Rob Hobart told The Morning Advertiser (The MA).

Recent figures from the Society of Independent Brewers & Associates (SIBA) showed cask consumption has slipped, with just over a quarter of beer drinkers now choosing it.

Among younger consumers, the drop was even more pronounced. However, the situation is more nuanced than the top-line numbers, Hobart suggested.

While standard ale has borne the brunt of the decline, is proving “far more resilient”, he told The MA, adding the segment is “far from insignificant”.

“Six million consumers still drink cask - twice as many as stout drinkers.

“While the overall cask category is in decline, this is largely driven by standard ale. Premium cask brands are performing far more resiliently”, Hobart continued.

The head of marketing said cask drinkers are also highly influential when it comes to choosing venues for their wider social group, adding cask drinkers typically visit the on-trade more frequently and spend more per head.

However, Hobart warned consistency and quality were critical for operators, particularly when it comes to charging a premium price point for cask.

He described quality as the single biggest challenge ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev completes sale of Newark brewery
Anheuser-Busch InBev has closed the $361 million sale of its longtime brewery in Newark, NJBIZ reported on May 7.

California-based Goodman Group acquired the 3.2 million-square foot property. Now it plans to redevelop the site for industrial manufacturing and logistics uses.

Commercial real estate advisor Newmark Group Inc. announced the deal in a May 6 press release.

However, CoStar reported May 1 that the transaction was finalized in March. According to the outlet, the industrial real estate developer paid $43.6 million for the roughly 75-year-old brewery’s buildings and about $317.4 million for the land they sit on.

In a statement, Newmark described the property as “one of the largest industrial redevelopment opportunities in the New York metro area.” The firm served as exclusive advisors to Anheuser-Busch in the sale.

The 86-acre property falls within the EWR (Airport) and EWR-S (Airport Support) zoning districts. The location supports “a wide range of industrial, logistics, airport-related, data center, commercial and hospitality uses,” Newmark said.

Newmark Executive Vice Chairman Adam Doneger commented, “Few sites offer this level of scale, connectivity and zoning flexibility. These characteristics, combined with its location within one of the nation’s most critical logistics corridors, position it to support the next generation of industrial and infrastructure users.”

Brewery news India: Brewers seek permission from state governments to increase beer prices
The ongoing tensions in West Asia have led to a surge in the prices of various commodities. First, they caused a rise in the prices of daily-use items, and now reports suggest that India Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) companies are facing difficulties because of it. They have now sought permission from state governments for a slight increase in beer prices. According to beer manufacturers, rising glass prices and shortages have created major problems, India.com reported on May 7.

The situation has become so difficult that even after agreeing to pay higher prices, they are not receiving bottle supplies on time.

Vinod Giri, Director General of the Brewers Association of India, an organisation that represents the beer manufacturers in India, told NBT that after brewing beer, delivering it to consumers is a major task. Beer is packaged either in glass bottles or aluminum cans.

In India, nearly 80 percent of beer is sold in glass bottles. Due to the war, producing glass in the country has become more expensive, while supplies have also declined.

Here are some of the key details: • Vinod Giri said that the cost of bottles accounts for nearly 40–45 percent of beer prices. • Empty beer bottles cost between Rs 12 and Rs 15 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Molson Coors to bring back Keystone Ice beer
Molson Coors plans to bring back Keystone Ice as part of a broad value-beer strategy this year, MSN reported on May 4.

The beer company signaled during its earnings conference call that it will reintroduce Keystone Ice after having previously cut the brand during a portfolio rationalization that was focused on “premiumizing” the product lineup. The relaunch of Keystone Ice is seen as timely amid renewed demand for low-priced, higher-ABV beers, with many consumers trading down while still seeking recognizable legacy labels.

The broader Keystone family traces back to 1989, when Coors introduced Keystone and Keystone Light as budget offerings aimed at price-conscious drinkers, using a separate brand identity from flagship Coors to avoid diluting the core franchise. Keystone, produced in Golden, Colorado, was initially rolled out in markets like Chico, California, before gaining wider U.S. distribution. The line became known for low price points and playful "bitter beer face" advertising. Keystone Ice arrived in the mid‑1990s amid the broader “ice beer” wave, in which major U.S. brewers introduced ice‑brewed extensions to appeal to young adults seeking more alcohol per dollar. Keystone Ice typically came in cans and kegs, and registered around 5.9% ABV.

Molson Coors announced in 2021 that it ...More info on site

Brewery news Mexico: Heineken Mexico launches its first operational decarbonization pilot
Heineken Mexico has launched its first operational decarbonization pilot in collaboration with biotechnology startup Bioram, marking a significant step toward integrated supply chain sustainability. The solution enhances nutrient absorption in crops while reducing reliance on conventional fertilizers, Mexico Business reported on May 5.

According to the company, the process lowers the carbon footprint of raw material production while improving crop quality and the profitability of the production cycle. Carlos Muñoz, Director of Biotechnology, Bioram, said preliminary results show positive impacts on waste transformation and field efficiency.

The project operates under a “venture client” model, positioning the brewer as a strategic customer that validates emerging technologies within real-world production environments. Bioram — winner of the decarbonization category in the Heineken Green Challenge, an initiative co-managed with incMTY at Tecnológico de Monterrey — is the first startup from the program to transition from acceleration to full operational deployment.

The partnership focuses on circular economy principles by repurposing brewery by-products into agricultural biostimulants designed for barley cultivation. “This first integration with Bioram is the most tangible proof of our commitment to applied innovation,” said Elena Montes de Oca, Sustainability and Social Responsibility Leader, Heineken Mexico. “We aim to move from entrepreneurship to systemic impact by integrating ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Heineken names new managing director for Beavertown brewery
Heineken has named Will Rice, who is currently on-trade sales director at the Dutch firm’s UK arm, as the new managing director for Beavertown, the Drinks Business (db) reported on May 1.

Speaking to db about his move to the helm of the north London brewery, Rice explained that he had big plans to continue the business’s growth and hinted at a “pipeline of innovation” to come, in what he called the “next phase” for Beavertown.

Rice told db: “The next phase is focused on building on Beavertown’s strong momentum – driving continued growth, deepening customer partnerships, and keeping a strong pipeline of innovation true to the brand.”

Rice’s appointment to the role will see its former managing director Jochen Van Esch stepping down after three and a half years at Beavertown and returning to the Heineken Group. In Rice’s place, Mick Howard, currently operations director for Star Pubs, will become the Heineken UK on-trade sales director.

Beavertown sold its final 51% stake of its business to Heineken in September 2022, the move followed the maker of Gamma Ray and Neck Oil having already sold a 49% stake of its business to Heineken back in June 2018 for £40 million.

Brewery news Cambodia: Government to ban prize promotions on beer and sugary drinks by October 2026
The Royal Government of Cambodia has decided to ban prize promotions for beer and sugary beverages, particularly energy drinks, through pull tabs, bottle caps, or other reward schemes by the end of the third quarter of 2026, with the measure set to take effect on October 1, Khmer Times reported on May 6.

According to a letter issued by the Ministry of Economy and Finance on May 4, the directive followed a high-level decision by Prime Minister Hun Manet. The ministry instructed the General Department of Taxation to implement the government’s policy to strengthen the management of the domestic beer and non-alcoholic beverage sector.

Under the measure, enterprises producing sugary beverages, especially energy drinks, must cease all prize-based promotional campaigns, such as hidden rewards under pull tabs or bottle caps, by the end of the third quarter of 2026. From October 1, companies will no longer be allowed to offer such prizes or to place new orders for, import, or produce packaging that includes promotional rewards.

The government has also ordered a complete halt to similar promotional schemes for alcoholic beverages, including beer, by the same deadline. After October 1, enterprises will not be permitted to produce or import bottle caps, pull tabs, ...More info on site
