Brewery news Malaysia: Carlsberg Malaysia lifts dividend as 1Q profit rises nearly 5%
Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd lifted its dividend payout as festive sales boosted net profit by nearly 5% in the first quarter from a year earlier, The Edge Malaysia reported on May 15.

An interim dividend per share of 24 sen was announced as net profit grew to RM98.94 million in the quarter ended March 31, 2026 (1QFY2026), a bourse filing showed. That compares to 23 sen per share declared in 1QFY2025 when net profit came in at RM94.52 million.

Carlsberg, the locally listed unit of the Danish multinational brewer, said it benefitted from a longer selling period ahead of Chinese New Year this year in both Malaysia and Singapore, sending revenue up nearly 10% year-on-year to RM705.95 million.

Looking ahead, the company said it is cautious amid geopolitical tensions, energy and input costs volatility, and broader macroeconomic uncertainty.

“The group’s priorities for financial year 2026 will centre on disciplined value management, cost optimisation and prudent resource allocation, while continuing to invest in our brands, brewery capabilities and digital transformation initiatives,” Carlsberg said.

Brewery news Thailand: Craft beer and local spirits producers oppose planned shift in excise tax calculations
Thailand's craft beer and local spirits producers have opposed a planned shift in excise tax calculations based on retail prices, warning the policy would disproportionately burden small operators already facing structurally higher production and distribution costs, the Bangkok Post reported on May 15.

Taopiphop Limjittrakorn, a People's Party (PP) MP and advocate for alcohol liberalisation, on Thursday received a petition from the Craft Beer Business Trade Association and the Thai Local Spirits Association urging the Excise Department to revise the tax structure before it takes effect on Friday.

The groups argue the retail price-based method does not reflect market realities and would raise the tax burden on smaller producers relative to major manufacturers.

Mr Taopiphop said efforts to liberalise Thailand's alcohol industry remained incomplete, with small brewers and distillers still constrained by advertising restrictions, unequal market access and taxation.

"The key issue is taxation," he said, referring to a March notification introducing new criteria for surveying retail prices and determining the most common "modal price" used as the tax base.

A representative of the Craft Beer Association said Thailand currently taxes alcohol based on both alcohol content and retail value, with the latter accounting for 22% of the retail price.

The association said smaller producers face ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya, Tanzania & Uganda: Asahi secures regulatory approval to acquire majority stake in East African Breweries
Japanese beverage company Asahi Group Holdings has secured regulatory approval to proceed with its acquisition of a majority stake in East African Breweries PLC without making a mandatory takeover offer to minority shareholders in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

The approvals were granted after Asahi announced plans to acquire 100 percent of the shares in Diageo Kenya Limited from Diageo Holdings Netherlands B.V..

The transaction will indirectly give Asahi control of approximately 65 percent of EABL’s issued share capital.

According to the company, exemptions were issued by Kenya’s Capital Markets Authority, Tanzania’s Capital Markets and Securities Authority and Uganda’s Capital Markets Authority under their respective takeover and mergers regulations.

EABL is listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange and cross-listed on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange and the Uganda Securities Exchange, making the approvals critical for the transaction to proceed across the three regional markets.

Despite the regulatory clearance, Asahi said completion of the deal remains subject to competition approvals from the Competition Authority of Kenya, Tanzania’s Fair Competition Commission and Uganda’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives.

The acquisition was first announced publicly on December 18, 2025, marking Asahi’s planned entry into Africa’s alcoholic beverages market for the first time. ...More info on site
