USA: Beer sales climb sharply during the 2026 FIFA World Cup
|
Beer sales in the United States have climbed sharply during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the biggest gains showing up in host markets and in bars, restaurants and taprooms, according to new data released by the Beer Institute, Vinetur reported.
The trade group said on-trade beer sales in host markets are up 15.4% during the tournament. Across the country, on-trade beer sales have risen 5.5%, suggesting that the event is lifting demand well beyond the cities staging matches. The increase comes at a notable moment for brewers, who have faced several years of declining volumes and are now seeing a major international sports event drive traffic back into hospitality venues.
Brian Crawford, the Beer Institute’s president and chief executive, said the World Cup has become a broad social occasion centered on bars, stadiums and home viewing. “This is more than a soccer tournament. It is a global event where people from all over the world come together at bars, stadiums and in living rooms to cheer on their home countries over a cold beer,” Crawford said. He added that “beer continues to be the drink fans choose to celebrate the moment and connect.”
The strongest gains have come from draught beer. In

USA: AB InBev announced a $4 million investment in its Idaho Falls operations
|
Anheuser-Busch, a leading American manufacturer and maker of Michelob ULTRA, Busch Light, Budweiser, and Bud Light, announced a $4 million investment in its Idaho Falls operations and a $50,000 grant to the University of Idaho through the Anheuser-Busch Foundation to support barley research, WebWire reported on July 15.
The investment in Anheuser-Busch’s Idaho Falls operations will support the company’s malt plant, seed facility, and barley elevator, strengthening efficiency, supporting local jobs, and fueling economic growth across Idaho’s agricultural community. Since 2021, the company has invested more than $11 million in its Idaho facilities, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the region.
Damola Oshin, Chief Procurement Officer, Anheuser-Busch said: “Idaho plays a critical role in our supply chain and in the future of American agriculture. Today’s investments reflect our commitment to the farmers and communities we’ve partnered with for generations, as their ingredients are the foundation of our high-quality beer.”
The University of Idaho grant will fund research focused on fertilizer and nutrient management for barley, helping optimize yields while maintaining the high-quality standards essential to brewing. This work builds on a decade-long partnership between Anheuser-Busch and the university to advance soil health, evaluate emerging technologies, and improve agronomic practices.

UK: Alcohol-free beer boom threatened by official definition, trade body warns
|
Pubs and brewers are being prevented from capitalising on Britons’ record-breaking thirst for non-alcoholic beer because of guidelines about which brews count as booze-free, The Guardian reported on July 14.
More than 64m pints of low- and no-alcohol beer is forecast to be sold over the summer, an increase of 8m compared with 2025, the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) said, citing the figures as proof that the category is “not just a fad”.
The trend comes amid lower rates of alcohol consumption among younger people and a more short-term trend towards moderation, with the UK in the grip of multiple prolonged heatwaves.
However, the BBPA warned that further growth in “no and low” beer, a category sometimes known as “nolo”, could be curtailed by the UK’s definition of what constitutes alcohol-free beer.
The current definition is an alcohol by volume content of 0.05% or lower, compared with many other countries where the threshold is 10 times higher, at 0.5%. Removing alcohol entirely from beer while retaining the drink’s signature flavour and aroma is extremely difficult.
Typically, the beer is brewed in much the same way, before going through a process of dealcoholisation, through a variety of methods, including the use of pressure or

South Korea: Non-alcoholic beer showdown heats up between Hite and Cass
|
According to a ranking analysis based on purchasing deep data by market research firm Embrain, the estimated purchase amount for the non-alcoholic beer market over the most recent year (MAT) in South Korea, as of May 2026, was calculated at 73.3 billion won. This represents a 32.6% increase compared to the 55.3 billion won estimated for the year from June 2022 to May 2023, the Asia Business Day reported on July 14.
Three years ago, women (31.1 billion won) outspent men (24.2 billion won) on non-alcoholic beer purchases, but since last year, the situation has reversed, with men's combined estimated purchases (40.0 billion won) surpassing women's (33.3 billion won) over the past year.
Under Korea's current Liquor Tax Act, beverages with less than 1% alcohol by volume are classified as drinks, while those with 1% or more are considered alcoholic beverages. Among beverages with less than 1% alcohol, those with an alcohol content below 0.00% (calculated to two decimal places) are classified as non-alcoholic, while those between 0.0% and less than 1% are classified as alcohol-free. The rise of non-alcoholic beers—beer-flavored drinks containing no alcohol—can largely be attributed to changing consumption habits among younger consumers who prioritize health and wellness.

India: India poised to emerge as one of the world's most important premium alcoholic beverage markets over next decade
|
India has the potential to emerge as one of the world's most important premium alcoholic beverage markets over the next decade, and United Spirits Ltd (Diageo India) intends to play a key role in shaping that evolution, Managing Director and CEO Praveen Someshwar was quoted as saying by the Economic Times on July 14.
Expressing confidence in India's long-term growth prospects, Someshwar said the country's next phase of economic expansion would create enduring opportunities for companies that combine scale with agility, ambition with discipline, and growth with responsibility, according to the company's latest annual report.
"India is already the world's largest whisky market and is increasingly emerging as a source of innovation and premium brands recognised well beyond its borders," he said, addressing the company's shareholders.
Someshwar said the company is particularly encouraged by the structural shift taking place in the Indian alcoholic beverages market, where consumers are not only trading up to premium brands but are also engaging with them in new ways.
Someshwar said India remains one of the most attractive consumer markets globally and is poised to become a major growth engine for premium alcoholic beverages, supported by rising aspirations, favourable demographics and an increasing preference for premium products.
He added that

China: Alcohol industry group urges tougher regulation of online spirits sales
|
China’s alcohol industry has called for stronger regulation of online liquor purchases, claiming that existing rules have failed to keep pace with the rapid growth of e-commerce platforms, The Drinks Business reported on July 13.
In a statement published on its WeChat account last week and translated by Bloomberg, The China Alcoholic Drinks Association first acknowledged that online sales platforms had benefited businesses – expanding market access and sparking new opportunities for businesses and employment.
However, the organisation then went on to warn that the websites had also brought challenges, including price distortions, high commission fees and other practices that were placing pressure on both producers and distributors.
The association urged regulators to strengthen oversight of commission structures, pricing, and platform traffic allocation, while increasing enforcement of antitrust and unfair competition rules.
The group also called on e-commerce platforms to invest in technologies such as artificial intelligence-powered consumer insights, blockchain-based product traceability and digital supply chain systems. It said platforms should provide greater support for smaller producers and help Chinese alcohol brands expand overseas through cross-border e-commerce.
In 2025, Chinese alcohol brands were priced at US$123.4 billion – built on years of strategic building and increasingly sophisticated campaigns, according to Brand Finance data.
