World: Gen Z now drinks at nearly the same rate as older adults, survey finds
|
New consumer research from IWSR is challenging a common assumption in the alcohol business: Generation Z is not stepping away from drinking at the rate many in the industry had expected. According to the latest edition of the group’s twice-yearly Bevtrac survey, 74% of legal-drinking-age Gen Z consumers across 15 key markets now drink alcohol, nearly matching the overall adult participation rate of 76%, Vinetur reported on July 15.
The figure is up from 66% three years ago, suggesting that alcohol participation among young adults has moved closer to the broader drinking population. The findings were published Tuesday by The Drinks Business, citing new data from the global drinks analyst.
Marten Lodewijks, IWSR’s president and managing director, said the idea that Gen Z is defined mainly by moderation no longer fits the evidence. He said younger consumers are developing different ways of engaging with beverage alcohol, but that their overall participation now sits at roughly the same level as the rest of society.

UK: Beer industry expects biggest summer for no- and low-alcohol beer
|
Britain’s beer industry expects this to be its biggest summer yet for no- and low-alcohol beer, with more than 64 million pints projected to be sold during the season, according to new research released by the British Beer and Pub Association, Vinetur reported on July 15.
The trade group said that would be more than eight million pints above the level recorded in the summer of 2025, extending a sharp rise in demand that has turned the category into one of the fastest-growing parts of the country’s beer market. The BBPA said about 200 million no- and low-alcohol beers were consumed last year, making 2025 the strongest year on record for the segment.
The figures come as brewers and pub operators in Britain report stronger consumer interest in moderation, especially during warm-weather drinking occasions tied to pub gardens, parks and sports viewing. The association said the category’s volume has grown 870% since 2013, a pace it described as evidence that no- and low-alcohol beer is now a lasting part of the beer business rather than a short-lived trend.

The World Cup has been a bonanza for beer in the U.S. Bars in Boston reported needing emergency deliveries to keep taps from running dry on some game days. Fans downed a total of 290,000 stadium beers during the six matches in Philadelphia, FIFA organizers were quoted as saying by Press Telegram on July 17.
But all that frothy foam obscures a cold reality: Beer sales have been struggling globally, and it’s unclear if soccer’s world championship tournament can reverse the trend despite having three countries and 16 cities as co-hosts this year.
In the U.S., beer consumption has fallen steadily for a decade, according to the Brewers Association, a trade group for craft brewers. Canada has seen a similar decline, according to the national statistics agency. The Brewers of Europe trade association says the story is the same in the European Union.
Many consumers are cutting back on alcohol for health reasons. Last year was the first time in Gallup’s polling that a majority of Americans – 53% — said drinking “one or two drinks a day” was bad for one’s health.

Zimbabwe's beverage industry is entering a new phase in which the biggest challenge is no longer generating demand but keeping up with it, Bulawayo24 reported on July 15.
Delta Corporation says robust consumer demand is stretching its brewing and packaging capacity, prompting the country's largest beverages producer to accelerate investment as it works to eliminate product shortages and expand production.
In its 2026 annual report, the company said production capacity has emerged as the principal constraint on growth after years in which subdued consumer demand and macroeconomic instability dominated the operating environment.
Delta said sustained demand had placed significant pressure on its production facilities, resulting in intermittent shortages across parts of its product range.
"Supply remained constrained by extended capacity utilisation across brewing and packaging operations, resulting in intermittent gaps across certain brands and packs and some sub-optimal product allocations across markets and channels," the company said in its review of the lager beer business.
To mitigate supply shortfalls, Delta supplemented local production with imports of premium regional and international brands, including Corona, Stella Artois, Brutal Fruit and Flying Fish.

India: United Breweries commissions new canning line at Nizam Brewery in Telangana
|
United Breweries Limited (UBL), a prominent brewer and member of the HEINEKEN Company, has officially commissioned a new canning line at its Nizam Brewery in Telangana. This initiative is part of a ₹90 crore investment initially announced in 2025 and was completed in record time from the date of groundbreaking to the first product trial. The new facility has already begun production, having successfully completed a trial run of Kingfisher Ultra cans, the Telugu Times reported on July 17.
The expansion significantly boosts the brewery’s manufacturing capabilities, increasing its annual production capacity by 0.4 million hectolitres. This brings the total annual capacity of the Nizam Brewery to 0.9 million hectolitres. Australia: Kirin and Tasmanian Government working together on Boag’s Brewery

The Tasmanian Government says it has secured a series of commitments from Japanese beverage company Kirin Holdings as discussions continue over the future of the historic Boag’s Brewery site in Launceston, The Shout reported on July 17.
The commitments follow meetings between the Tasmanian Government and Kirin, the parent company of Lion, after the announcement of the brewery’s planned closure.
Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the Government had raised concerns from employees and the local community directly with Kirin.
“We have advocated for and on behalf of the hardworking Northern Tasmanians who have helped build the Boag’s brand,” Premier Rockliff said.
“I heard clearly from the workers about how this unexpected decision has impacted them and their families, and the need for more clarity from Kirin and Lion.
“After advocacy that reflected the community’s view during our meeting in Japan, Kirin has agreed to genuinely consider the further requests in relation to the worker support package.”
Rockliff said Kirin had also committed to working with the Government on the long-term future of the brewery site.

Adie Broswon Breweries (ABB), a division of The Adie Broswon Group, has entered a long-term manufacturing arrangement with United Breweries Limited (UBL). The deal, announced on July 14, 2026 in New Delhi, leverages ABB’s 12 million-case brewing facility to support large-scale brewing requirements in North India, The Whiskey Ways reported.
The partnership strengthens ABB’s role in the region’s brewing and manufacturing ecosystem.
Its brewing facility is described as one of the region’s largest and is powered by German brewing technology from Ziemann.
In FY2025–26, the facility crossed its highest-ever annual production milestone of more than five million cases.
ABB says the plant operates entirely on renewable-energy-powered systems. The facility also maintains FSSC 22000 and QMS-certified manufacturing standards.
According to ABB, this reflects “its focus on quality, operational consistency and sustainable manufacturing.”
The company positioned the arrangement within a broader industry shift.
“As India’s beer market continues to evolve, brewers are increasingly leveraging specialised manufacturing arrangements to optimise regional production networks, improve asset utilisation and strengthen supply resilience,” the company said.
It added that large-scale facilities “with advanced technology, globally certified quality systems and operational flexibility are playing an increasingly important role in supporting the industry’s next phase of growth.”

Australia: Malting and feed barley exports down in May
|
Australia exported 826,954 tonnes of barley and 410,470t of sorghum in May, according to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data, Grain Central reported on July 17.
Malting barley comprised 170,534t and feed barley 656,419t, with the malting figure being down 21 percent and the feed figure half the April totals respectively.
Major destinations for feed barley in May were China on 589,184t, with the United Arab Emirates on 41,000t and Saudi Arabia on 19,000t in second and third.
China on 79,096t was also the major market for malting barley, followed by Mexico on 30,270t and Peru on 21,000t.
China on 404,938t was the destination for 99pc of Australia’s sorghum exports, with Taiwan on 3736t and The Philippines on 1724t a long way behind for second and third.
In its barley supply-and-demand report released June 12, Lachstock Consulting said current season exports continue to exceed expectations, tightening eastern Australian stocks and supporting demand.
“Globally, China remains the key driver with imports forecast around 12.95 million tonnes,” the report said.
“Further downside in Australian barley values appears limited, with exporters re-engaging and export parity largely achieved.”

The India-UK Free Trade Agreement has brought cheer to Scotch whisky makers with a sharp reduction in import duties, but consumers may have to wait before seeing a significant fall in bottle prices, Firstpost reported on July 15.
Under the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), India has reduced customs duty on UK whisky from 150 per cent to 75 per cent from July 15, with the tariff set to gradually fall further to 40 per cent over the next 10 years.
The move is expected to improve market access for Scotch whisky and other qualifying UK spirits in India. However, industry experts said the reduction in import duty alone will not translate into an equivalent decline in retail prices.
Import duties are only one component of the final price paid by consumers. State excise duties, registration fees, distribution margins, logistics costs and retailer margins will continue to influence the price of imported whisky across Indian markets.
