Malaysia: Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia sales to hold despite price hikes, analysts said
|
Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd is not expected to see a steep decline in sales despite higher product prices in the second half of 2026 (2H FY26), as its cost optimisation and marketing initiatives could mitigate the impact, The New Straits Times reported on August 30.
RHB Research analysts note that the overall consumption environment could get more challenging due to the impact from the Middle East conflicts on supply chain and production costs.
"Looking ahead, management focus will be on cost optimisation and prudent resource allocation to mitigate the challenging market environment," it said in a note.
It added that the brewer has observed a pick-up in contraband incidence, as the cautious consumer sentiment and spending may have given rise to a more conducive environment for illicit trades to gain market share.
This is also after taking into account the widened price gaps following the excise duty hike at the end of 2025.
"We understand that management is working closely with the relevant authorities to facilitate the clampdown efforts," it said.

South Korea: OB Beer accused of evading 16.5 billion won in tariffs
|
OB Beer has been indicted on allegations of evading approximately KRW 16.5 billion in tariffs by importing malt through partner companies. It has now been revealed that the transaction method was previously presented at an internal company workshop as a “best practice” for reducing tariffs, News Watch reported on September 1.
The 14th Criminal Division of the Seoul Northern District Court held a trial on August 26 for OB Beer, which was indicted on charges including violations of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (Customs Duties) and the Customs Act. In June last year, the Seoul Northern District Prosecutors’ Office’s Tax Crime Investigation Department indicted OB Beer CEO Ben Verhaert, a vice president in charge of procurement, referred to as A, as well as the company and its partner firms.
Prosecutors allege that OB Beer improperly utilized the FTA Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) system to evade approximately KRW 16.5 billion in tariffs. The company is accused of structuring transactions so that, although OB Beer was the actual importer of the malt, the partner companies appeared on paper to be the importers, allowing OB Beer to receive tariff benefits.

|
Heineken Ethiopia will launch a 4 billion birr energy project at its Kilinto brewery in Addis Ababa in October that will allow the plant to operate without heavy fuel oil, marking the company’s latest investment after 15 years of expansion in Ethiopia, Birr Metrics reported on September 1.
The project, which has taken about one and a half years to build, is already running the brewery entirely on green electricity, Bart De Keninck, managing director of Heineken Ethiopia, told Birrmetrics at an event marking the company’s 15th anniversary on Tuesday.
The facility will be formally inaugurated in the second half of October.
“Normally, to run a brewery, you need heavy oil to heat up the plant,” Bart said. “There has been new technology to use green electricity instead of oil, even though it requires huge investment.”
Brewing requires substantial heat, particularly during the boiling stage. The new system replaces heavy fuel oil used for heating with electricity, allowing the Kilinto plant to operate entirely on green electricity.

India: Bira 91 faces insolvency push as HNGIL seeks ₹11.8 crore
|
Hindusthan National Glass and Industries Ltd (HNGIL) has served a default notice on B9 Beverages Ltd, the maker of the Bira 91 range of beer, as it plans to drag the debt-ridden brewer to the insolvency tribunal NCLT, The Economic Times reported on August 30.
HNGIL, a container glass manufacturer, has issued the notice under Section 8 of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), a mandatory step before filing an application for commencement of the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP).
In the notice, HNGIL -- an operational creditor of B9 Beverages Ltd -- claimed default in payments and sought recovery of ₹11.77 crore for glass bottles manufactured against confirmed purchase orders but allegedly not lifted by B9 Beverages.
Last month, Bira 91 Founder Ankur Jain stepped down from the board and all executive positions at parent company B9 Beverages Ltd, along with members of his family, after settling with the company's lenders and investors, bringing to an end a prolonged financial crisis at the firm.

Ghana: Government rejects call to freeze revised excise duty rates on beer
|
The government has rejected Accra Brewery Limited’s call to freeze revised excise duty rates on beer, saying the company has not provided evidence for its warning of 2,000 job losses, News Ghana reported on August 31.
ABL had asked the government to leave the existing sliding-scale beer excise rates unchanged for the 2026 and 2027 fiscal years, arguing the pause would allow time for an evidence-based review of how the revised regime might affect local manufacturing, investment, competitiveness against imports and jobs across the beer value chain. The brewery estimated the change could cost its own budget $7.5 million based on implementation assumptions for FY27, and said the wider beer sector supported 52,000 jobs in 2023, about 0.4 percent of total employment, with roughly 98 percent of those jobs sitting outside the breweries themselves.
Under the previous regime, beer and stout made with more than 70 percent local raw materials qualified for a 10 percent excise rate under a three-band sliding scale meant to reward local content. The revised Excise Act keeps the three-band structure but raises the top band’s rate to 25 percent, alongside increases in the middle band.

North America: Diageo North America to axe 305 jobs
|
More than a third of staff at Diageo’s North America headquarters in New York will be laid off as part of the company’s restructuring, The Spirits Business reported on September 1.
A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice was issued on 30 June and posted on 21 August.
It affects 305 workers at Diageo’s headquarters at 3 World Trade Centre in New York, where 839 employees are not represented by a union. The layoffs mean that 36.3% of the site’s workforce will be cut.
The redundancy process will begin on 30 September this year, according to the notice, and end on 30 September 2027.
A Diageo spokesperson said: “As we shared at the start of August, we have been redesigning our operating framework to deliver a more competitive Diageo. We understand that this is a difficult time for colleagues, and we remain committed to supporting everyone through these changes.”
The owner of brands such as Don Julio and Johnnie Walker is undergoing a major restructuring that targets more than US$1 billion in cost savings over the next three years and aims to reverse the company’s revenue decline in previous years.
