Kenya: High Court temporarily halts completion of Diageo’s EABL sale to Asahi
|
Kenya’s High Court has temporarily halted the completion of Diageo’s proposed sale of its controlling stake in East African Breweries (EABL) to Japan’s Asahi Group Holdings, pending ongoing regulatory and legal proceedings, Food Business Middle East & Africa reported on September 3.
Justice Francis Gikonyo ruled that EABL’s ownership and control as of June 18, 2026, must remain unchanged until an appeal before the Capital Markets Tribunal is determined and the Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) completes its review of the transaction.
The case was filed by Christine Irungu, who has challenged the proposed transaction over disclosure of information, protection of minority shareholders and the role of market regulators.
A central issue is Diageo’s decision to increase its stake in EABL from about 50% to approximately 65% through a 2022-2023 tender offer before agreeing to sell its controlling interest to Asahi.
Irungu has questioned whether the earlier acquisition increased Diageo’s controlling stake ahead of the proposed sale and whether minority shareholders received adequate information.
“The petition raises constitutional issues including violation of specified constitutional provisions, rights and guarantees as well as exercise of mandates by statutory authorities concerned,” the court said.

Norway: Registered alcohol sales fall 1.8% in Q2 2026
|
Registered alcohol sales in Norway fell 1.8% year over year in the second quarter as weaker demand for wine and spirits outweighed a small decline in beer and another increase in ready-to-drink beverages, according to new data released on September 2 by Statistics Norway.
The country recorded 105.206 million liters of alcoholic beverages sold between April and June, down by 1.967 million liters from the same period in 2025. The figures come from excise tax returns filed by companies that pay alcohol duties to the Norwegian Tax Administration.
The sharpest declines came from wine and spirits. Wine sales fell to 21.052 million liters in the second quarter from 22.645 million liters a year earlier, a drop of 1.593 million liters, or 7.0%. Measured in pure alcohol, wine accounted for 2.616 million liters during the quarter, down from 2.812 million liters a year earlier. On a per capita basis for residents age 15 and older, wine sales fell to 4.45 liters from 4.83 liters, a decline of 7.9%.
Spirits followed a similar pattern. Sales fell to 2.573 million liters from 2.768 million liters in the second quarter of 2025, a decline of 195,000 liters, or 7.0%. In pure alcohol terms, spirits dropped to 1.003

World: Family battle for control of Castel continues to play out in public

Four of the five branches of the Castel family, owners of a €6.9bn ($8bn) global beverage and wine company, have ostensibly issued a statement on the 28th August 2026 distancing themselves from Romy Castel, daughter of founder Pierre Castel. For nearly a year, Romy Castel has attempted to oust the company’s first non-family CEO, Grégory Clerc, in a dispute over control of the business. The family statement has backed Clerc and asked for an end to the ongoing disruptions. However, Romy Castel has questioned its validity and it looks likely that a legal battle over control of Castel will continue to play out, TrendType reported on September 3.
Castel Group is the world’s third-largest wine producer and owns the Nicolas retail chain and extensive vineyards in France. In Africa, it is the second-largest brewer, holding market leadership in countries including Angola, Cameroon, and Cote d’Ivoire. Its operations are managed through regional subsidiaries, such as SBM (Société des Boissons du Maroc), in Morocco.

Mexico: Lawmakers consider raising beer taxes
|
Mexican lawmakers are weighing a tax increase of as much as 1 Mexican peso on each unit of beer as part of the early debate over the country’s 2027 economic package, a proposal that could raise about 6.451 billion pesos in additional revenue if it moves forward, Vinetur reported on September 3.
The measure was presented on September 2 in conclusions prepared by a working group created by the Finance and Public Credit Committee in Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies. Vanessa López Carrillo, a lawmaker from the Labor Party, said the proposal calls for increasing the excise tax applied to beer by between 0.60 pesos and 1 peso per unit.
The proposal is not approved and is not in effect. It would first have to be incorporated into the broader budget discussion that begins Sept. 8 in the Chamber of Deputies as lawmakers take up the 2027 economic package.
Supporters of the change argue that beer should bear a larger share of the tax burden because of its dominant role in Mexico’s alcohol market. USA: FIFCO USA acquired by Saothair Capital Partners, to revert to former name North American Breweries
|
Saothair Capital Partners has acquired CCR American Holdings, or FIFCO USA, from Distribuidora La Florida, a Heineken subsidiary, through a newly formed affiliate. Terms were not disclosed. The Rochester, New York-based brewer will revert to its former name, North American Breweries (NAB), Dealroom.co reported on September 4.
NAB is one of the leading US brewers, making and selling beer and ready-to-drink beverages including Labatt, Genesee, Seagram's Escapes, Lipton Hard Iced Tea, and Bubly Wine Refresher. Saothair is a private equity firm focused on middle-market manufacturing and industrial companies.
Saothair says it will invest in the Genesee Brewery — one of the oldest continually operating US breweries — and the company's brand portfolio. NAB employs over 700 people and is also one of the largest US providers of full-service contract brewing.
Peter Bodenham joins as chief executive officer, bringing more than 25 years across InBev, NAB, and Sleeman Breweries. He held senior marketing roles at NAB and its predecessor from 2007 to 2014, including vice president of marketing, before leading marketing for Sleeman. He replaces the leadership under Heineken's ownership.

Zimbabwe: Varun Beverages to begin first phase of partnership with Carlsberg on September 20
|
Varun Beverages Zimbabwe will begin the first phase of its much-anticipated partnership with Danish brewing giant Carlsberg on September 20, with the local company set to import and distribute the globally recognised beer brand ahead of the commencement of local production next year, The Herald reported on September 4.
The development will introduce a new player into Zimbabwe’s beer market, setting the stage for increased competition in a sector long dominated by Delta Corporation, the country’s leading brewer.
The arrangement forms part of a broader agreement between Varun Beverages Limited and Carlsberg covering the sale and distribution of the brewer’s products across Africa, with Zimbabwe identified as the first market in the phased rollout programme.
Varun Beverages Zimbabwe chief executive officer Mr Vijay Kumar Bahl said the company would leverage its extensive distribution network to make the Carlsberg brand widely accessible to consumers throughout the country.
“Over the years, Varun Beverages Zimbabwe has built a strong, multi-layered route-to-market and distribution network, supported by people, infrastructure and execution capabilities, reaching customers across the country,” Mr Bahl said.
“We now look forward to putting that distribution strength behind a globally recognised beer brand and bringing it closer to Zimbabwean consumers.”

USA: Idaho hop acres rebound 16 percent this year
|
After plummeting the past two years, Idaho hop acres rebounded 16 percent this year, although the increase may not be as much as reported.
According to USDA’s Aug. 12 crop production report, Idaho farmers harvested 5,932 acres of hops this year, a 16 percent increase over last year’s 5,102 total.
Idaho Hop Growers Commission Chairwoman Diane Gooding said Idaho hop acres this year may not be as high as reported for a variety of factors.
“It’s a false positive, really,” she said about Idaho’s reported hop acres in 2026.
Oliver Schroeder, who serves on the IHGC board and is the past chairman, agreed.
“Acres are pretty steady,” he said. “Those numbers are a little bit ambiguous. They’re pretty close, but they’re not perfect.”
Whether or not reported Idaho hop acreage is as high as USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service reported, it seems a lock that Idaho will remain the nation’s No. 2 hop-producing state in 2026.
Hops are used as a bittering and flavoring agent in beer production.
According to USDA, Idaho hop farmers will produce 12.64 million pounds of hops this year, up 9 percent over last year. Average yield is estimated at 2,130 pounds per acre, down from 2,281 pounds per acre last year.
