India: Carlsberg told to close Alwar brewery in Rajasthan over pollution breach
|
Rajasthan's pollution control board has revoked Carlsberg India's operating consent for its Alwar brewery and ordered its closure, citing particulate emissions nearly eight times above the permitted limit, according to a regulatory order, adding a hurdle as the Danish brewer prepares to list its Indian business through a $700 million initial public offering, The Economic Times reported on October 12.
Supplies to Rajasthan will be affected, but the impact is likely to be limited as the closure comes after the peak summer season, a senior industry official said.
The brewery also transmitted only 35.12% of its required pollution-monitoring data to the central regulator, below the mandatory threshold of 85%, the order reviewed by ET said. The state board revoked the consent to operate granted to Carlsberg India's Alwar facility on April 24, 2024, which was valid until October 31, 2028, subject to compliance with prescribed conditions. It directed the company to shut the plant and warned that failure to comply could trigger further action under air and water pollution laws.
The order followed the central pollution regulator's inspection in July and its subsequent recommendation for closure in August. The state board also directed the local electricity distribution utility to disconnect power to the

South Korea: HiteJinro to domestically produce Japanese Kirin beer
|
South Korea’s HiteJinro will domestically produce Japanese Kirin beer, which it has previously imported and distributed. This marks the first instance in Asia where Kirin, known for its strict beer quality management, has partnered with an external company for technology collaboration and production, The Chosun Daily reported on October 12.
HiteJinro announced this during a press briefing held on the 8th at its Integrated Research Institute in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. The company signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Kirin in July for a technology partnership and began producing canned ‘Kirin Ichiban Shibori’ at its Jeonju factory starting the first week of this month. The product is expected to appear in distribution channels like convenience stores once existing stock is depleted. The company explained that while the design and taste of domestically produced Kirin products remain unchanged, shortened distribution times will allow consumers to access fresher products compared to previous imports.
As South Korea’s top liquor company, HiteJinro has imported and distributed Kirin’s beer since 2004. This collaboration now extends to technology partnerships. HiteJinro directly received Kirin’s proprietary yeast used in ‘Ichiban Shibori,’ a beer brewed with only the first malt extract, and Kirin’s technical team spent over a year establishing raw

Japan: Happoshu beer sales volume up 12% year-on-year in September
|
Sales figures for September released by Japan's four major beer makers on the 13th showed that overall happoshu sales volume rose 12% year-on-year. The increase was driven by last-minute demand ahead of the tax hike that took effect under the October liquor tax reform. Beer, which was subject to a tax reduction, had raised concerns about purchase holdback, but sales held firm with a 2% increase, Biggo Finance reported on October 13.
The liquor tax reform took effect on October 1, unifying the tax rate for beer-type beverages at a single rate per 350 milliliters. Beer received a tax cut of ¥9.1 (approximately $0.058), while happoshu and third-category beer saw tax increases of ¥7.26 (approximately $0.046). Third-category beer sales volume fell 5% year-on-year in September, reflecting front-loaded demand in anticipation of the tax rate being raised to nearly the same level as beer, followed by the subsequent pullback. Combined sales of beer, happoshu, and third-category beer rose 2% year-on-year.
Among the four major brewers' beer-type beverage sales results, Asahi Breweries, Ltd., which reports on a value basis, posted a 1% increase, while Kirin Brewery rose 3%. On a volume basis, Suntory fell 2% and Sapporo Breweries declined 1%. From October onward, beer

Malaysia: Brewers get reprieve from excise duty hike under budget 2027
|
Malaysia’s two main brewers are expected to benefit from the government’s decision not to raise excise duties on alcoholic beverages under Budget 2027, providing relief to brewers following last year’s tax increase and creating opportunities for stronger sales from the extended Visit Malaysia campaign, Business Today reported on October 10.
Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research said the absence of further excise duty hikes should enable brewers to capitalise on higher tourism-related spending, particularly through increased on-trade sales at restaurants, bars, hotels and entertainment outlets.
The government has allocated RM935 million to extend the Visit Malaysia campaign into 2027, targeting 47 million international tourist arrivals.
HLIB said the initiative could provide an additional boost to domestic beer consumption, particularly in tourism-driven establishments.
“We applaud the absence of excise duty hikes on alcoholic beverages in Budget 2027, which should allow brewers to better capitalise on the extended Visit Malaysia campaign through stronger on-trade sales,” the research house said in its sector review.
However, HLIB expressed disappointment over the lack of additional measures to address illicit alcohol trading, which continues to pose challenges to legitimate industry players.
Despite a subdued sales volume outlook for 2026, HLIB maintained its OVERWEIGHT recommendation on the brewery sector, citing attractive valuations and

India: United Breweries seeks to expand Heineken beer in Bengal, explores export to north-eastern states and overseas
|
United Breweries Ltd (UB) has sought a review of Bengal’s excise policy to expand production of Heineken beer in the state and explore exports to north-eastern states and overseas markets, CM’s adviser Subrata Gupta said on October 12.
UB was part of a Dutch business delegation led by the Netherlands ambassador Marisa Gerards that met state commerce and industries minister Tapas Roy and Gupta in Kolkata to explore investment opportunities in Bengal.
“Representatives of seven Dutch companies, which already have a presence in India, with some operating in Kolkata, are looking to expand their businesses. They have sought govt support for expansion. We discussed how the govt could address their requests. Some decisions were taken to further cooperation, and we look forward to expanding their operations,” Gupta said.
UB wants to expand its existing brewery in the state to supply more beer to north-eastern states and south-east Asian countries. The company has sought changes to the excise duty structure, Gupta said, adding that govt had asked it to submit a proposal for examination by the excise and finance departments.

Cameroon: Boissons du Cameroun expands its beer range
|
Boissons du Cameroun introduced a new beer brand on October 9, 2026, adding to its product range in a market where it holds a dominant position. The new brand, Mboa, has a recommended retail price of CFAF 500 for a 50-centiliter bottle, with distribution beginning in the Littoral Region before expanding to other parts of the country, Business in Cameroon reported.
At the product's unveiling in Douala, the company presented figures on its purchases from Cameroonian suppliers and reiterated its target of increasing local content in its operations to 60%.
According to figures presented by the company, Boissons du Cameroun purchased 3,000 tonnes of processed maize from local supplier MAISCAM, involving a network of 1,512 agricultural producers. It also reported purchasing 12,000 tons of sorghum from Cameroonian farmers. The company did not specify how much of these locally sourced materials would be used to produce Mboa.
The brewer has been expanding its agricultural sourcing operations for several years. According to Business in Cameroon, its sorghum purchases increased from 8,000 to 12,000 tonnes following the integration of Guinness Cameroon's assets. The company also produces glass packaging through its subsidiary, SOCAVER, which reports annual output of 45,000 tonnes.
Following its acquisition of Guinness Cameroon's assets, Boissons

Australia: Malting barley exports marginally up in August
|
Australia exported 619,445 tonnes of barley and 220,599t of sorghum in August, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Grain Central reported on October 12.
Feed barley accounted for 428,200t of the August barley exports, a drop of 27 percent from the 583,191t shipped in July.
Malting barley exports in August accounted for 191,245t, up marginally from July’s figure of 190,852t.
China was the biggest market by far for August-shipped barley and sorghum, and accounted for 87pc of feed barley, 94pc of malting barley and 98pc of sorghum.
In feed barley exports, Japan on 43,469t was the second-biggest market, followed by Vietnam on 3678t, while Vietnam on 7145t was the second-biggest malting market, followed by Singapore on 3440t.
Aside from China, Taiwan on 3489t, The Philippines on 850t, and Vietnam on 100t were the only markets for August-shipped sorghum.
McDonald Pelz senior broker Sam Roache said barley exports continued to fade into the back end of the year, in line with market expectations.
“This trend will continue into November, driven by a lack of availability from export areas into the close of the season,” Mr Roache said.
“Demand has also faded into the back end of the crop year, with China comfortable, and some

UK: Scotch Whisky Association challenges England’s new single malt rule
|
England’s new geographical indication for whisky has become a point of dispute across the British and Irish spirits industry, with English distillers welcoming a long-sought legal definition for their products and Scottish producers challenging one of its central rules in an appeal, Vinetur reported on October 12.
The UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, known as DEFRA, approved the geographical indication, or GI, for English whisky in September, completing a process that began in February 2022 when the English Whisky Guild submitted its application. The new protection gives English whisky an official product specification and legal recognition tied to origin and method, similar in principle to long-established systems used for wine and other spirits.
The approval is a major milestone for a whisky category that is still young by international standards. According to the English Whisky Guild, England had just over a dozen whisky producers about 10 years ago. Today, the number of active and planned whisky distillers is believed to have passed 70, ranging from small craft operations to larger names such as Cotswolds, the Lakes Distillery, Spirit of Yorkshire, and the English Distillery.
That fast expansion helped drive the push for formal recognition, but it also made agreement difficult.
