China: China’s holiday beer sales fell more than 5% from a year earlier
|
Beer sales in China appear to have declined by more than 5% from a year earlier during the combined Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday period in 2026, according to a report published by National Business Daily, a business newspaper, citing channel checks and analyst estimates rather than official industry data.
The reported drop points to weaker beer consumption during one of the country’s important seasonal selling windows. The estimate compares sales during this year’s holiday period with the same festive stretch in 2025. The report did not provide an absolute sales volume, which means the size of the decline in barrels, tons or cases cannot be calculated from the information released.
National Business Daily said the weakness was concentrated in cheaper beer products priced below 8 yuan. At the same time, it said the overall sales mix and average price per ton remained relatively firm, suggesting that demand held up better in higher-priced segments even as total volume softened.
That distinction matters for brewers and investors because China remains the world’s largest beer market by volume. A decline in shipment or retail volume during a major holiday season can signal pressure on broad consumer demand, but a stable product mix and pricing

Belgium: Flemish hops recognition aims to encourage breweries to use local ingredients
|
Hops and hop shoots from the Aalst, Affligem and Asse area have been recognised as a Flemish regional product by the Flemish Centre for Agricultural and Fisheries Marketing, known as VLAM. The designation acknowledges the area’s agricultural heritage and the continued work of local growers and producers, the Brussels Morning reported on October 15.
According to reporting by VRT NWS, hop cultivation in the region dates back to the 15th century. The crop has a longstanding connection with local agriculture and brewing, with hops serving as an important ingredient in beer production.
The recognition covers both hops and hop shoots. While hops are widely used by brewers, hop shoots are the young edible growth of the plant and are associated with regional food traditions.
The designation places these products within Flanders’ regional food heritage. It also provides a way to identify agricultural products connected to a particular area and the people who continue to produce them.
TV Oost reported that the recognition represents acknowledgement for local farmers and producers who have maintained this longstanding tradition. The broadcaster also noted that the designation could encourage regional breweries to use locally grown hops in their beers.
One of the stated aims associated with the recognition is to

USA: Idaho hops industry stabilizes after challenging 2026 growing season
|
Idaho remains one of the country's leading hop-producing states, ranking behind Washington in acreage. But as demand for hops has shifted in recent years, Idaho and Oregon have traded places for second and third on the list, Yahoo reported on October 16.
This year brought another set of challenges for growers, including an unusually warm winter, drought conditions and smoke that affected harvest timing.
At Gooding Farms in southwest Idaho, the harvest is now complete, and the work to prepare for next year's crop is already underway.
For Enrique Albor, the end of harvest means a return to other work on the farm. He spent years working in hops before moving to vegetables this season.
"This is my first year working on the vegetables," Albor said.
Hops are a labor-intensive crop, requiring more hands-on work than many traditional commodity crops, according to Diane Gooding, who helps manage the family operation with her sisters.
Gooding is also the chair of the Idaho Hop Growers Commission.
"So, it's a lot more labor-intensive than, say, corn or wheat or other commodity crops," Gooding said. "Very more reminiscent of grapes and grape harvest, where you have a lot of hand labor."
Gooding said 2026 was one of the most difficult growing seasons

France: Whisky producers seek national rules requiring 85% French cereals
|
France’s whisky industry is moving to formalize a national geographical indication that would set stricter origin rules for products sold as “Whisky de France,” including a requirement that 85% of the cereals used be French and that 70% of malting take place within the defined area, Vinetur reported on October 13.
The application is due to be filed with France’s National Institute of Origin and Quality, or INAO, on Oct. 15 after five years of negotiations among producers, according to industry representatives cited by Terre de Vins. The proposal is scheduled to go before the INAO national committee in November, with approval expected in February 2027, followed by a two-month opposition period.
The project would create a legal definition for French whisky at a time when the category is expanding and producers are trying to draw a clearer line between genuinely domestic production and products that undergo only limited processing in France. Under the proposed rules, a whisky seeking the geographical indication would have to be brewed, fermented, distilled and aged in mainland France.
Backers of the plan say the goal is to protect the name while preserving room for different production styles. Dominique Ribereau-Gayon, president of the Syndicat de Défense du Whisky
