Brewery News
China: SABMiller invests US$35.3 million in a new brewery in Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province

China Resources Snow Breweries Limited (“CR Snow”), an associate of SABMiller Plc and a subsidiary of China Resources Enterprise Limited (“CRE”), announced on May 04 that it will invest US$35.3 million in the construction of a new brewery in Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province.

Construction of the brewery has commenced and is expected to complete in 18 months with an initial production capacity of 2.3 million hectolitres. The brewery will be used mainly to produce CR Snow’s national brand, “SNOW”, targeting the Harbin area and the western region of the province. CR Snow’s existing brewery in Shangzhi, a city in the south-eastern region of Heilongjiang, will service the eastern part of the province.

Heilongjiang Province reported total beer sales in 2005 of 15 million hectolitres and annual consumption per capita of 39 litres, significantly above the national average of 23 litres. The new brewery will provide a production, distribution and marketing platform to support the national brand strategy of SNOW and cater for the increased demand of CR Snow products. Total sales volumes of SNOW brand increased 47% in 2005 to 15.8 million hectolitres. Over the past two years CR Snow has increased sales volume by approximately ...

Thailand: Thai Beverage plans to market S$1.8 Bln of stock in Singapore

Thai Beverage Pcl, Thailand's largest brewer, is planning to sell as much as S$1.8 billion ($1.1 billion) of shares in an initial offering in Singapore, the biggest stock sale in the city-state in more than a decade, Bloomberg reported on May 05.

Thai Beverage will sell 4.88 billion shares, half of which is new stock, at between 26 Singapore cents and 36 Singapore cents a share, according to a preliminary prospectus filed to the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Thai Beverage is owned by Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, Thailand's richest man.

The brewer of Chang Beer and Mekhong whiskey is selling shares in Singapore after anti-alcohol protesters blocked a sale in its home market. The sale helps boost Singapore's efforts in drawing more foreign share sales, crucial to its effort to remain a major financial center in Asia as competition increases from Shanghai to Mumbai.

“In terms of proximity to its home market, Singapore would feature quite prominently,'' said Steven Lim, who helps to manage $300 million of assets at Daiwa SB Investments in Singapore. “The Singapore market would probably give them more visibility than, say, Hong Kong, which is a prominent market for Chinese stocks.''

Bangkok-based Thai Beverage's offering may be the biggest ...

On the same date “Pikra” has finished one of stages of the investment program of 2006 and has commissioned 8 new conic-piston tanks (CPT) of known German company "Ziemann ". Daniil Briman, vice-president of Baltika Brewing Company and the chairman of board of directors of “Pikra” says: “The introduction of new capacities represent a new stage in the development of the company. Canada: Small beer brewers say 'cheers' to tax cut

Canada's small beer makers expect to create 1,500 new jobs over 10 years as a result of the federal government's promise to cut the excise duty on their suds, CBC communicated on May 03.

In their first budget revealed May 02, the Conservatives said they will cut excise rates on beer by anywhere from 15 per cent to 90 per cent for brewers producing up to 75,000 hectolitres a year.

The Canadian Association of Small Brewers, which represents over 90 brewers across the country, applauded the move.

The brewers currently employ about 2,000 people, but they expect the tax cut will let them create about 1,500 new jobs in the next decade.

"The tax reduction will allow Canadian craft brewers to achieve important tax parity with small brewers in the U.S. and around the world, who enjoy significant tax advantages in their home markets," John Hay, director of the brewers association, said. "This will give us room to grow and compete in the highly competitive beer market," Hay added.

The association expects that about 45 per cent of the money saved from the excise tax cut will be invested in production and sales jobs.

Small brewers are defined as those producing less than 300,000 hectolitres of ...

USA: Anheuser-Busch to buy Rolling Rock

Anheuser-Busch Cos., the world's largest brewer, may be close to buying Rolling Rock beer from InBev NV as the brewer tries to attract new drinkers with craft-style beers, a UBS Securities analyst wrote in a research note, Orlando Sentinel posted on May 04.

Belgian brewery giant InBev SA said it has started examining options "both inside and outside" the company for its beer brand Rolling Rock and its US-based brewer. The group said it is analysing "how to optimise the full potential of Rolling Rock and the Latrobe Brewing Company".

It added that InBev USA last year made a business decision to focus its sales and marketing resources on "high-profit speciality import brands", including Stella Artois, Bass Pale Ale, Beck's, Brahma and Labatt Blue.

InBev said that while Rolling Rock and Latrobe continue to have "great potential", it has not made a final decision on the brand. Earlier, daily De Standaard reported that US brewer Anheuser-Busch Cos Inc is close to purchasing Rolling Rock, citing a UBS analyst.

Anheuser-Busch wants to add Rolling Rock because it costs 16 percent more than the Budweiser and Bud Light brands, analyst Caroline Levy wrote on MAay 02.

InBev, the world's third-biggest brewer, said in ...

Malt News
EU: Overview of EU malt market standing

EU Barley malt production in 2005 was still 8,4 Mill. Tons, but factory closures in France, Germany, Slovakia, Sweden and the U.K. plus temporary shutdowns of some German industries will reduce EU malt production substantially.

According to analysts’ data, the estimated EU 2006/07 malt production amounts for about 8,035 Mill. Tons, compared to 8,768 Mill Tons total EU malt capacity, thus indicating a severe malt surplus. An uncertain figure is the average malt use in beer, which is very different from country to country.

The figures officially provided do not take into account the temporary closure of the Weissheimer in Hungary and the risk of a temporary shutdown in Germany as well. Any longer production pause could bring EU production down to dangerously low levels.

Hops News
New Zealand: Researcher says NZ is attracting overseas interest with organic beer

A New Zealand hop researcher says Nelson hop farmers are attracting world-wide attention because of their ability to produce unique tasting and organically-grown hops, according to Radio New Zeeland reports on May 03.

Ron Beatson, a hop breeder for HortResearch, says because New Zealand's environment is relatively free of pests, hops are able to be grown without pesticides.

Dr. Beatson says there has also been a worldwide increase in demand for boutique or craft beers, which the local industry has responded to by investing in research for new hop varieties.

He says the unique attributes of New Zealand hops have attracted the attention of big overseas beer companies such as Anheuser Busch, which owns the Budweiser brand.

He says the company is looking at buying New Zealand hops which could be used in specialised craft beers.

Measuring barley kernel colour and size to predict end use malt quality
M. J. Edney, Marta S. Izydorczyk1, S. J. Symons and N. Woodbeck (Industry Services/Grain Research Laboratory collaborative study on valuing barley)

Abstract: The effectiveness of the grading system of the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) in predicting end use quality of malting barley was compared to machine-based methods. A series of malting barley samples from the 2003 harvest were analysed for grade, colour and size. The barley was malted and the malt analysed for quality. Results supported the grading system with barley grading Special Select showing the best overall malting quality. Statistically, the grades, based on one inspector’s observations, showed the same ability as colour measurement by imaging to predict several barley and malt quality parameters. However, the machine-based method was better at several parameters. The imaging system also offered the potential of more objectivity over time compared to grades determined by different inspectors on different days. These findings were based on the quality of a limited number of samples from one harvest and need to be repeated using additional samples with varying degrading factors. Plump barley was found to produce, under standard processing conditions, adequately modified malt with good levels of malt extract. In contrast, intermediate sized kernels had significantly lower malt extract and the malts were over modified using standard processing conditions. Thousand kernel weight, a specification frequently used to indicate malt barley quality, gave a good indication of potential malt extract of plump barley but with intermediatesized barley, it only gave an indication of processing requirements. Thousand kernel results were compared to those from the Single Kernel Characterization System (SKCS), which measures and calculates the mean weight, diameter, hardness and moisture of 300 kernels per barley sample. Both methods correlated similarly with malt quality Variability of size among 300 kernels of sample, as indicated by SKCS’s standard deviation of Degrading factors and malt barley kernel diameter and weight, explained additional variability in final malt quality, in particular malt modification.
