EU: New study confirms Europe’s Brewers are World-Beaters

Europe is the most important beer producer in the world, according to a study conducted by Ernst & Young and launched by The Brewers of Europe in Brussels on May 11. Brewers of Europe represent the national brewing associations from 22 countries. The report entitled ‘The Contribution made by beer to the European economy’ is the first ever report to comprehensively quantify the economic contribution of the brewing sector in Europe, and the results are remarkable:

There are more than 3000 SMEs in Europe’s brewing sector. These help foster Europe’s regional development and the competitiveness of our agriculture, and make it the world’s largest producer (followed by China and then the USA),

Of the seven largest brewers in the world, four are European. These help make the European brewing sector the world leader in beer exports

The total employment effect generated by the brewing sector in the EU is 2.6 million jobs. This is equivalent to the total employment of countries such as Slovakia or Denmark.

The tax revenue national governments receive from the production and sale of beer amounts to 39 billion euros. This represents more than the total annual government expenditure of Finland or Poland.

The total contribution of the brewing ...

Canada: Sleeman releases first quarter 2006 financial results

Sleeman Breweries Ltd. released on May 11 its financial results for the first quarter ended April 1, 2006.

"I am pleased with the fact that our core volume growth strategies allowed us to deliver solid volume gains and grow our total revenues in the face of the expected difficult pricing conditions we experienced in the quarter," said John Sleeman, Chairman & CEO. "In addition, our focus on cost controls continued to bear fruit as we reduced our ongoing SG&A expenses and maintained our average cost of goods sold per hectolitre at the prior year's levels."

The Company successfully installed the sterile filtration equipment required to produce Sleeman Original Draught at its Guelph facility and now produces all of its eastern requirements there. This change in production source will generate significant freight savings for the Company in the future.

As previously announced, the Company implemented a second reorganization of its workforce during the quarter. This reorganization is expected to generate annual cost savings of $2.7 million.

In Ontario, the Company successfully executed its value brand growth strategy generating volume growth in excess of 30% in the quarter.

Malt News
France: IMC-France considers closing its Marquette-lez-Lille site

The International Malting Company France (IMC-France) is experiencing structural economic difficulties arising as a result of the new situation prevailing in the marketplace. Faced with this, the company's management this morning informed the unions and employees' representatives that it would be consulting the Works Committee concerning plans to close its Marquette-lez-Lille production site. This site produces 105,000 tonnes of malt per year and employs 53 people.

The malt industry needs to face up to a situation of global overproduction. Europe is particularly affected by this, due among other things to the recent construction of production sites in Spain, Holland and Scandinavia, but also in Russia, the Ukraine, Romania... This extra capacity reduces the number of outlets open to European malt producers who had previously delivered into these markets.

Additionally, the brewery sector (IMC France's main client) is undergoing concentration, with the five leading brewers now accounting for 45% of global production. This concentration process is today accelerating, and combined with the global overcapacity situation is now putting considerable pressure on prices.

The crisis in the malt market is a long-term one and is unprecedented. It is resulting in the closure of the least competitive and least well situated malt plants. Consequently, in 2005 malt works closed down in the United Kingdom, while in February 2006 an 80,000 tonne malt plant closed at Reims and the leading German malt producer recently ceased trading.

IMC-France's results have deteriorated sharply faced with such an extremely difficult economic environment. Year 2005 ended with important losses (the prospects for 2006 are even more worrying), despite the measures taken over several years both in terms of commercial positioning policies and investments (with ˆ7 million invested over four years for the water treatment plant, the boiler area and the dryer, etc). Due to its size, its production costs, its structure and its geographical location far from a port (since 80% of production is exported), the IMC-France site is extremely vulnerable.

For IMC-France's general manager Sylvain Caulliez: "if this project of closing is confirmed, we will do everything possible to enable every employee to find a solution adapted to his or her personal situation."

IMC France is the French subsidiary of the International Malting Company (IMC) group. It produces and markets malt for the brewing industry. The International Malting Company group is jointly owned in equal proportions by Archer Daniels Midlands (ADM), a listed American food group, and by the French family owned group Lesaffre et Cie. The IMC group is based in France at Marquette-lez-Lille, in the United States, in Canada, in Australia and in New Zealand. It employs 300 people and produces 900,000 tonnes of malt per year.

USA: The planned $350 million industrial park will include an expanded Cargill malt plant

Gov. John Hoeven, along with industry executives and city and county officials, announced on May 8 plans for the Spiritwood Industrial Park, a new $350 million industrial complex in Jamestown.

The park will include a 100 million gallon ethanol plant; an expanded Cargill malt processing plant; and a 40 megawatt coal-fired steam generating plant using the latest technology to power the entire enterprise. The combined facilities will provide 200-300 jobs during the construction phase and 100 full-time jobs when operational.

The planned industrial park will include Cargill Malt. Cargill Malt will complete a 30 percent expansion of its facility at the site, increasing its annual purchase of barley from 20 to 28 million bushels. This would greatly strengthen the facility’s long-term viability in North Dakota. Cargill Malt is a business unit of Cargill, an international provider of food, agricultural and risk management products and services. With 140,000 employees in 61 countries, Cargill is committed to using its knowledge and experience to collaborate with customers to help them succeed. The company’s Spiritwood facility, originally Ladish Malt Company, opened in 1974 and was purchased by Cargill in 1991.

“We could not be more pleased with our partners and the effect this investment will have ...

Hungary: Borsodi Brewery to buy back malt-house from Albadomu Malt

Borsodi Brewery Zrt, 60% owned by InBev, is going to buy back a malt-house in Bõcs (northeastern Hungary) from Albadomu Malt Bt, communication director of Borsodi, Imre Fehér said, according to Hungarian news agency BBJ.

The malt-house was sold by Borsodi two years ago because of a portfolio adjustment. Now Albadomu has gone bankrupt and stopped production, forcing the brewery to import the raw material from Austria and the Czech Republic. The original sale contract contained a buy-back option for such cases.

The company sold 2.2 million hectoliters of beer in Hungary last year making it the market leader. Borsodi Brewery Inc. has been operating since 1973, and in the last quarter of a century it has grown to become the second largest brewery in the country – this growth is far from over. Their basic, and main activity is the production of beer, but apart from this they also have a large malt producing capacity, which is important for other companies as well.

The company was one of the first breweries to be privatised (in 1991), and it became a member of Interbrew, the fifth largest brewery group in the world. Among the changes in the company, probably the most ...

Barley News
World: New crop barley and malt markets are nervous

The old grain year is winding down. Export business of feed barley is negligible, of malting barley non-existent, experts said.

The EU Commission granted refunds of almost € 6,- per ton and lowered sales prices of intervention stocks, but most old crop import demand is filled, and harvest of new crop barley in the Mediterranean region is just around the corner.

Russian industries still find local barley and the South American brewers have not yet entered the market for the second half of 2006. In local markets feed barley is sold to intervention due to the lack of export and feed demand, malting barley, on the other hand, has become rather tight, as France and U.K. are more or less sold out in quality barley, and the Weissheimer group in Germany is taking in fairly large quantities under special insolvency credit rules. Denmark remains the only larger seller of old crop malting barley.

Business in new crop malting barley has been done for deliveries ex harvest and the last quarter of the year, mainly as cover for existing malt sales for 2006.

New crop barley and malt markets are nervous, there is uncertainty about the spring barley acreage in the ...

Denmark: A 4-year research project to develop hops for beer production

The Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences (Danmarks JordbrugsForskning) is conducting a four-year research project to develop hops plants that can be used for beer production, Berlingske Tidende posted on 02 May 2006.

Danish breweries are large importers of hops for beer brewing. The project involves in the same time the Royal Agricultural University which examines the resistance of the plants to diseases. Among the same project partners, Jacobsen micro brewery, owned by Carlsberg’s, contributes to the research project by providing analyses on the plants deriving flavours.

The Effect of Germination Temperature on Malt Quality of Buckwheat
H. H. Wijngaard and H. M. Ulmer, Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences and National Food and Biotechnology Centre, University College Cork, College Road, Cork, Co. Cork, Ireland; and E. K. Arendt,1 Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences and National Food and Biotechnology Centre, University College Cork, College Road, Cork, Co. Cork, Ireland

Abstract: J. Am. Soc. Brew. Chem. 63(1):31-36, 2005 Common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) with and without hull was malted at four germination temperatures, 9.5, 14.9, 16.5, and 20.2°C. Optimum characteristics of malts and resulting worts were obtained when buckwheat was germinated at 16.5 and 20.2°C. Buckwheat without hull germinated at these temperatures showed similar values in soluble nitrogen and free amino nitrogen to barley malt. Both a- and ß-amylase activity levels were low in malted buckwheat. The maximum activity level of a-amylase was 47.79 units g–1 (wet wt) in buckwheat without hull and germinated at 16.5°C. The maximum activity level of ß-amylase was induced in buckwheat germinated at 20.2°C: 129.80 and 125.68 units g–1 (wet wt) were found in buckwheat with and buckwheat without hull, respectively. Maximum apparent fermentability (56%) was reached when buckwheat was germinated at a temperature of 20.2°C. Although amylolytic activity and fermentability levels were low in malted buckwheat, buckwheat malt appears to have potential as a brewing ingredient once malting and mashing conditions are optimized.
