Brewery News

Russia: Heineken could accomplish the second largest takeover in the Russian brewery sector

Russian brewer Ivan Taranov is to be acquired by Heineken for $560 million, Reuters announced on August 16. Heineken has made no comment yet on this issue. Nevertheless, the Russian daily Kommersant, quoting sources at both companies, said the two firm s planned to sign a deal later on Tuesday.

Moscow-based Taranov, Russia's seventh-biggest brewer, has three breweries spread across Russia and nationwide beer distribution. It made earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of $30 million in 2004 and analysts forecast that it will post EBITDA of $40 million in 2005. Its brewing capacity is of 4.5 million hectolitres a year .

Taranov is the brewer of Pit and Three Bears beers. Its beer brands include Konigsberg and Doctor Diesel, and it also brews licensed brands such as Bavaria, Gossen and Coors, to give it a 4.4 percent share of the Russian beer market by volume and about 4.5 percent by value.

Russia is the world's fifth-biggest beer market after China, the United States, Germany and Brazil, and the top beer makers are racing to expand in the country.

Kommersant stated the deal would help Heineken to catch up with its main foreign competitor in Russia, the world's ...

Cambodia: Carlsberg acquires 50% of Cambrew in Cambodia

Carlsberg acquires 50% interest of Cambrew Ltd. in Cambodia. The brewery is located Sihanouk Ville on Cambodia’s west coast.

Cambrew has a total capacity of 450,000 hl and holds a 45% market share in Cambodia. brewery owns the Angkor Beer brand, named after the famous temple Angkor Wat. The potential for growth in the Cambodian beer market is significant as the beer consumption per capita is only about 6 litres per year, which is below the level in the neighbouring tries. Here the average consumption is 12-22 litres per capita per year.

The acquisition is a further step in fulfilling Carlsberg’s strategy to enhance the strong tion in South East Asia, where Carlsberg is already present via shareholdings in Laos, laysia, Singapore and Vietnam. In Vietnam Carlsberg recently signed a so-called letter memorandum regarding a strategic cooperation with Hanoi Brewery (Habeco).

Philippines: San Miguel Corporation posted P100.6 billion consolidated revenue in the 2005 first semester

San Miguel announced on August 11, that its operating income reached P7.84 billion while consolidated net income amounted to P3.85 billion. The Company experienced continued increases in cost of raw materials, packaging and utilities, as well as higher financing charges as San Miguel took on additional funding for acquisitions and expansions.

Revenue from San Miguel Beer Division (SMBD) Philippine operations increased 11% to P20.44 billion. Operating income was up 8% at P4.33 billion due to stable malt prices and higher average selling prices. Despite higher excise taxes, volume level has been sustained on the back of new programs to boost sales.

SMBD International’s operating profit surged five-fold as distribution and operations achieved further efficiency. Overall sales volume jumped 12% following the strong performance of SMC’s Indonesian and Australian beer operations. SMBD also achieved gains in its China operations (including Hong Kong) where volume grew 10% versus last year due to the strong performance of Dragon, Blue Star and other economy brands.

With a remarkably strong performance coming from all its business segments, the San Miguel Food Group brought in P29.1 billion in revenue in the first half of 2005, 5% higher than last year. And with selling prices ...

China: APB`s Group PBIT surges 25% in 3Q fuelled by strong volume growth in almost all markets

Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) announced on August 12 that the company continued the positive momentum established in 1H2005 with yet another set of strong results in its third quarter ended 30 June 2005.

Group PBIT rose 14% or $21.3 million to $175.5 million. Attributable net profit (before exceptional items) also increased by 11% or $9.4 million to $92.8 million.

Mr Koh Poh Tiong, Chief Executive Officer, APB, said, "The strong performance of the Group is driven mainly by operations outside Singapore. Our breweries continued to show strong volume growth especially in China, Indochina, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Thailand. Today, more than 80% of our earnings come from overseas markets, thereby widening our earnings base. The results attest to the strength of our brands in the beer industry."

Group profit before interest, taxation and exceptional items (PBIT) rose 25% from S$38.0 million to S$47.3 million in 3Q2005. Attributable profit (before exceptional items) also increased by 11% or S$2.1 million to S$21.6 million.

"All markets, except Singapore, registered gains in volume. China reported the largest volume growth of over 50%. Overall, China turned in a profit for this quarter instead of a loss recorded in the same quarter last year. ...

Czech Republic: Beer exports register an increase of 20% for the first half of 2005

The brewers from Czech Republic exported 1.46 million hectolitres of beer in H1, up 21 % year-on-year, and raised output by 3.5 percent to 9.15 million hectolitres, according to the Praguemonitor.

Domestic beer sale grew by just 0.65 percent to 7.69 million hectolitres. "This has confirmed our expectations," Jan Vesely, the CEO of Czech Brewing and Malting Association said, adding that Czech beer output will continue to grow mainly because of exports.

For the entire year, beer output should rise to at least 19 million hectolitres, Vesely said earlier. Last year, Czech breweries put out 18.75 million hectolitres of beer, up 1.1 percent against 2003.
Sale on the domestic market fell slightly but exports went up 25 percent to 2.64 million hectolitres in 2004. Brewers say the growth of exports accelerated after the country's accession to the EU.

41 breweries out of the 48 operating in the Czech Republic last year, were also exporting their products. There was a reduction in the share of the three leading exporters, namely Budvar, Pivovary Staropramen and Plzensky Prazdroj. This fact points out to increasing activity of other Czech brewers.

Canada: Beer- the absolute leader on the British Columbia’s beverage market

The most popular beverage in British Columbia is the beer. The latest quarterly market survey deployed by B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch's shows that beer has a share of 75% in all liquor sales in the province, by volume.Imported beer sales were up by nearly 6%, while Domestic beer sales fell by 1.25% in the 12 months up to this June

Nevertheless domestic beer still leads by far in total volume. More than 236 million litres of domestic beer have been consumed between June 2004 and June 2005, compared with 31 million litres of imported beer.

The next in the British Columbian top comes wine, accounting 13% of total sales by volume. Hard liquor have 6.3%, coolers 3.2% and cider 2.3%.

Belgium: The monks from Saint Sixtus monastery not delighted about their “Best Beer” Prize

For more than 160 years, the Trappist monks at Saint Sixtus monastery in Flanders have produced a rich, dark-brown beer renowned for its exceptional flavour and strength, the Independent said on August 13. But an unexpected misfortune has befallen this reclusive community of 26 Cistercians: their beer has been named the best in the world. So huge is demand that stocks are exhausted and sales have been stopped. As hits on the monastery website reach 2000 a day, Saint Sixtus has been deluged with requests for media interviews, from the United States to Bulgaria.

At the entry of the monastery, near the French border and 80km from Calais, a notice directs visitors across the road to the claustrum, an exhibition on monastic life. Normally, the only outsiders allowed to visit the silent order are those who seek spiritual contemplation. But Mark Bode, co-ordinator of the claustrum, explains the principle behind the brewery. "It is to produce as much beer as we need to finance the community," Bode says. "We make the beer to live but we do not live for beer."

For this reason, their anxiety about the accolade by www.ratebeer.com, an independent United States-based site for beer enthusiasts, ...

The approvals regard 110,000 tonnes of feed barley to the Middle East and 60, 000 tonnes of malting barley towards China. The target of this is get Western Australian grain into segments of the market currently serviced by rival producers and increase the general benefits to Western Australian growers.
