Sleeman Breweries Ltd. announced on September 16, a national sales, marketing and distribution agreement with
FEMSA Cerveza of Mexico, for the Canadian market.
FEMSA Cerveza is a fully-owned subsidiary of FEMSA,
the largest beverage company in Latin America. FEMSA brands to be sold in Canada under

USA: A beer claiming to be the original "Budweiser" to be sold in America
A beer claiming to be the original "Budweiser" will be sold soon in the shadow
of Anheuser-Busch maker of the better-known beer of the same name, Associated Press reported on
September 16. The Czech brewer Budejovicky Mestansky Pivovar isn't interested in picking a trademark
fight, at least not in the U.S., where it's calling its beer B.B. Burgerbrau
"Beer of the City's Residents." In Europe, the same brew is sold as "Budweiser Bier."
"I
don't want to stick my hand in that fire," said Rob Neuner, president of Classic
Beverages LLC of Darien, Conn., the U.S. importer of B.B. Burgerbrau. "Budweiser is a trademark
of Anheuser-Busch. We don't want to market the beer as Budweiser per se, but we
don't see any problem saying the beer is from the town of Budweis."
Labels use the
Czech term "Budejovicke Pivo," which translated means "Budweiser Bier," and the brew will offer point-of-sale
references to "Czech Budweis City" as the site where the beer is made.B.B. Burgerbrau was
introduced in a handful of U.S. markets this spring, including Richmond. It will arrive in
St. Louis, along with Kansas City and some other Missouri markets- within two weeks, Neuner
said.
He said B.B. Burgerbrau uses

India: Australian Foster’s plans expansion in India
Foster's brewery from Australia is researching for "brewing opportunities" in India. Mr Pradeep Gidwani Managing
Director said on September 19 to AFX:"We are looking to scale up operations in India
and thus are interested in either setting up another brewery or acquire an existing one".
"We have built a foundation in India and are now looking at closing gaps and
expand to newer markets such as Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and north-eastern states,"
Mr Gidwani stated.
The company, selling the flagship brand Foster's in India introduced also
another beer brand 'Amberro' last year, and has its manufacturing facility at Aurangabad which has
a capacity to produce up to six million cases per annum. "Foster's today is the
number one premium international beer brand in India and we are a very strong player
in the mild beer market," Mr Gidwani said.
The Indian beer market, dominated by Vijay
Mallya's UB group which has a commanding 51 % share, is estimated to be around
85 million cases annually. Of this, the mild beer market is around 30 million cases
while the rest is with the strong beers.

Germany: Künzel is purchasing Hauner malting plant business
German company, Künzel Maschinenbau of Mainleus, is completing the acquisition of Hauner malting business belonging
to the assets of the insolvent Rudolf Ohlmann GmbH based in Markt Bibart. Thus Künzel
Maschinenbau of Mainleus is returning to its former activity of malting plant. Since 2000 the
company has specialised in milling and malt handling and storage equipment for the brewery.
Ohlmann’s former
managing director, Günther Ruoff, is to head the new product group. Künzel mentioned that Hauner
malting plants have a good reputation for their solid technology and the special rotating kiln
floor system.
“There are many technical parallels between malting and milling plants: silos, transport systems,
cleaning plants, dust-removal devices as well as weighing and measuring systems. Therefore many synergies can
be used through the new acquisition,” Künzel said.
“Activities will at first concentrate on service
to the former Hauner/Ohlmann customers, including the supply of spare parts, maintenance, repair and plant
extensions. The design and construction of complete malting plants will follow.”
Recently, Hauner completed the second
24,500 tonnes plant at Stamag Vienna, a subsidiary of Ireks. Other recently-completed contracts include plants
at Tivoli in Hamburg, Malzfabrik Rheinpfalz in Pfungstadt and Schill in Rheindürkheim.

Barley News
EU: The mixed results of Spring Barley Harvest
The results of 2005 spring barley harvest in the EU are very mixed, contrary to
predictions contained in earlier forecasts, GlobalMalt commented in its September Market Report.
GlobalMalt said: “After
a good previous year, both Germany and France achieved below average results for the 2005
harvest. In contrast, Denmark and the United Kingdom, with a few cutbacks, achieved better results
than last year.”
“The area of spring barley cultivated in Germany and the EU was almost
unchanged compared to last year. Germany enjoyed good sowing conditions for barley followed by virtually
ideal growing conditions. However, the hot June weather had a very negative effect on yields
and qualities. Changeable weather at harvest time further reduced the availability of malting barley in
late growing areas. Instead of 2 million tonnes, this year only about 1.5 million tonnes
of quality malting barley will be available in Germany (- 25 percent). As malt production
will also fall, the import requirement will not rise in proportion but will increase by
250 000 tonnes to 500 000 tonnes.
The qualities of the harvested malting barley show a
protein content of 11 % and small kernels. In particular, the percentage on the
2.8 mm sieve is below
