Australia: Federal Court of Australia delays decision on Lion Nathan and Coopers

The Federal Court of Australia announced it has delayed until next week its decision on whether or not a meeting of shareholders of Coopers Brewery can take place to consider the removal of brewer Lion Nathan Ltd's pre-emptive rights to buy Coopers shares, Asia Pulse communicated on October 7.

Lion Nathan and Coopers are locked in legal wrangling arising from Lion Nathan's hostile A$352 million (US$267.91 million) takeover bid for Coopers at A$260 per share. ADVERTISEMENT

The Federal Court's Justice Alan Goldberg is now expected to hand down his decision on Tuesday next week. He had been expected to hand down his decision in Melbourne this afternoon.

Lion Nathan is seeking an injunction from the Federal Court to stop a Coopers shareholders meeting on October 20 from considering a resolution to remove Lion Nathan's pre-emptive rights.

Under the Coopers constitution, shares up for sale must first be offered to another Coopers shareholder, secondly to AMP or any other Coopers employee superannuation fund, and thirdly to Lion Nathan.

Lion Nathan has said that if Coopers shareholders vote in favour of the resolution they will effectively put an end to its takeover offer of A$260 per share. Lion Nathan has argued that Coopers shareholders do ...

Poland: Kompania Piwowarska’s beer sales exceeded 11 mln hl over the last 12 months

One of the second world’s leading beer maker, SABMiller, announced on October 4 that its subsidiary, Kompania Piwowarska S.A., is the first Polish brewer whose sales over the 12 months exceeded 11 million hectoliters of beer (that is 2.2 billion 500-ml glasses). “We reached the record-high sales from October 2004 to the end of September this year! Over that period we gave consumers over 11 million hectoliters of beer brewed in three superb breweries: in Poznań, Tychy, and Białystok. A year ago (that is from October 2003 to the end of September 2004) sales of Kompania Piwowarska were 9.7 million hl,” the brewery said.

The excellent sales results Kompania Piwowarska owes to superb management of its brand portfolio. According to ACNielsen data from the beginning of August, the three biggest beer brands in Poland are Kompania Piwowarska products!

For years the number one has been Tyskie: its market share in August (ACNielsen statistics) was 13.4%. The quality of Tyskie is reflected not only in the trust of domestic consumers but also in yet another success on international arena: in mid-September the brand repeated its success from 2002 winning the Gold Medal and Grand Prix at the most reputable beer contest ...

Canada & Brazil: AmBev is sure its Labatt Brewing is on track to increase profits by 15%

Brazil's AmBev said on October 5 that it has helped decrease costs at its brewery in Canada, Labatt Brewing Co., and added it is on track to increase profits 15 % this year. "We are on our way to deliver on our target," Reuters quoted Pedro Aidar, AmBev's head of investor relations.

Labatt, which came under AmBev's control a year ago when Belgian parent InBev bought the Brazilian brewer in 2004, has struggled to increase market share in Canada, where the industry is saturated and the competition stiff.

Labatt's market share is down half a point to 41 % from the same time last year. In an attempt to streamline operations and boost profit margins, InBev slashed 40 million euros of costs from Labatt's operations through job cuts and other savings.

Labatt has already closed one plant and said it will close another this year. It does not see any more closures and said that by the time both facilities are offline the brewer will have reduced staff by around 450. Cost-cutting measures are seen as one of the factor's behind Labatt's projected profit growth this year and Aidar said he does not expect the same kind of growth in 2006. ...

Philippines: San Miguel’s international beer sales volume for the first 8 months rose 13%

San Miguel Corporation’s (SMC) announced on October 6 its consolidated net sales revenues rose 30% to P139.9 billion for the first eight months of the year, spurred by gains across its major businesses. Consolidated operating income for the eight-month period amounted to P9.92 billion, 2% higher than last year’s level.

Double-digit revenue growth was maintained in SMC’s beverage units that likewise sustained volume increases particularly in international beer, water and juice businesses.

San Miguel’s international beer sales volume for the first eight months rose 13%, while revenues increased 9% to US$181.7 million with robust gains particularly in Indonesia and Australia.

The San Miguel Food Group (SMFG), benefiting from volume gains and better selling prices, posted consolidated revenue of P39.98 billion, a 4% gain from a year ago. The consolidation of newly acquired Australian firm National Foods Limited beginning in June brought in P11 billion in revenue. Meanwhile, San Miguel Packaging Products (SMPP) reported sales revenue of P13.7 billion in the first eight months, up 25% from the same period last year.

Serbia and Montenegro: The Kosovo Trust Agency has launched privatisation of Peja Brewery

The Kosovo Trust Agency announced on October 7 it has launched the privatisation of Peja Brewery (N.P. Fabrika e Birrës), a socially owned enterprise, which is considered to be one of the most important enterprises to be privatised.

Prequalification dates for both entities are January 11, 2006, with the first round of bids dues by January 18, 2006.

The new company, NewCo Peja Brewery L.L.C. will only include the assets that constitute Peja Brewery’s beer production and commercialisation activity, namely a major part of its main production site in Pejë/Peć. It does not include a number of Peja Brewery assets that are considered to be “non-core”. Special Spin-off conditions apply to NewCo’s tender.

Peja Brewery is the major beer producer in Kosovo, producing approximately 193,000 hectoliters of beer in 2004. Peja Brewery’s main product is a light, full-flavoured, Pilsner-type beer, which is branded “Birrë e Pejës”. It is sold in glass bottle (0.5 litre and 0.33 litre) and in keg (50 litres). “Birrë e Pejës” is the leading beer in Kosovo, where it enjoys strong brand recognition. The company also produces malt (the main raw material in beer) from barley, for its own use and for third-party sales. Other revenue is ...

Australia: Joe White Maltings will close its Wendouree malt production plant

Australian agribusiness, ABB Grain Ltd announced on October 6 that its wholly owned subsidiary, Joe White Maltings, will close its Wendouree malt production plant at Ballarat from December 1.

Joe White Maltings says the decision was due to the need for major capital investment in the Ballarat plant to bring it up to efficient operation. “The 30,000 tonnes of malt previously produced by Wendouree will now be covered by the more efficient, low cost Forrestfield plant in Perth,” ABB Grain Ltd’s managing director, Michael Iwaniw, said.

“In addition to covering the malt production previously produced at Wendouree, an additional 70,000 tonnes will be produced at Forrestfield. “The doubling of Joe White Maltings’ Forrestfield’s annual malt capacity to 200,000 tonnes is the result of a $40 million upgrade to the WA plant, with the extra production used to supply the expanding malt market in Asia.

“The increased efficiencies we will gain from the Western Australian upgrade, which will be completed in February 2006, will better position ABB and Joe White to compete in the Asian market.”

Joe White Maltings’ other plants in the Ballarat region – Lake Gardens and Delacombe – will continue to produce malt. Many of the Wendouree staff are long-term employees and ...

Russia: Russky Solod sold 320,000 t of malt of crop year 2005/06. Russian malt prices

The largest Russian maltster, Russky Solod, reported sales of their maximum capacities of 320,000 tonnes for the crop year of 2005/2006. The company revealed it plans to raise its total capacity to 0.5 million tonnes over the next few years.

Russian statistics show the result of a larger domestic malt production: Imports dropped from 550,000 tonnes in the calendar year of 2004 to 180,000 tonnes in the first semester of this year.

Russian malt prices are reported to be € 250,- / € 270,- ex works for first class malt, produced from imported barley, but only € 230,-/ € 250,- for first class malt of Russian barley of Western varieties, another € 20,- less for fair average quality. (All prices excl. VAT.)

Malteurop opened officially its Ukrainian malthouse expansions at Charkov and Chernigov: they will produce a total of 150.000 tons of malt.

China: China started purchasing malting barley after a lengthy absence from the market

Last week China purchased a cargo of 30,000 to 35,000 tonnes of malting barley from Australia at a price of 204 et 205 US$/t, Reuters communicated on October 6. Last week China also purchased malting barley from Canada and Europe. Reuters said last month that China had bought 60,000 tonnes of French malting barley.

The acquisition is a return to the market by Chinese brewers after their strategy of buying substitute cheap feed barley backfired. A leading Australian grains trader said on October 5 that China is also keen to buy malting barley from the new crop.

Chinese brewers have for months been trying to avoid the higher prices for malting barley by buying cheap animal feed barley to blend with malting barley, Australian traders said, according to Reuters. This is a familiar tactic and usually allows China to produce low-quality cheap beer. But this year the quality of the feed barley has been so poor importers have dumped it.

"Everybody keeps saying 'the Chinese will buy anything, it doesn't matter'. It has been true in the past ... But last year that just went all to pot," said Ole Houe, coarse grains manager at grains trader GrainCorp. "The ...

Brazil: Three new barley varieties for brewing were launched for the South of Brazil

On September 2, during the Expointer 2005 in Esteio, Wheat Embrapa in Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul, three new barley varieties were launched, Assessoria de Imprensa has recently posted. These varieties, BRS Marciana, BRS Lagoa and BRS Mariana, are of good quality, appropriate for brewing purposes and can be easily grown in the South of Brazil. The launching was held in the Embrapa House and the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Roberto Rodrigues, as well as the President of Embrapa, Mr. Silvio Crestania attended the presentation.

In Brazil, differently to other countries, the malting has been the main economic use of the barley, because the country has other more profitable options in order to feed animals. In this sense, approximately 85% of the barley is used for the malt production, 7% is kept as seeds and 8% for the production of feed products, when it does not reach the quality required for malting. The annual consumption of malt by the Brazilian brewing industry is estimated to be one million tonne, while 70% of this demand is supplied by importing malt from Argentina, Uruguay, Canada or Europe.

The barley production in Brazil is concentrated in the South, but there are ...
