Brewery News
Colombia & UK: SABMiller to become the world’s second largest brewer after acquisition of Bavaria

About 98 % of London-based SABMiller's shareholders gave an ok for the deal, which makes SABMiller the world's second-largest brewer behind Belgium's InBev, and bumps St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. to third place. SABMiller acquired a 71.8% stake in South American brewer Bavaria in a deal valued at US$7.8 billion (50.7 billion rand at the current exchange rate), SABMiller stated.

Bavaria is the second-largest brewer in South America, with a 79 % or more market share in Panama, Ecuador, Peru and Colombia. Its brands include Aguila, Cristal, Pilsener and Atlas. Bavaria also produces water, juices, soft drinks and milk.

London-based SABMiller said the deal would further diversify its existing businesses and brands in attractive growth markets. The brewer already has operations in El Salvador and Honduras, but those markets are difficult because of their weak economies and high fuel prices, reports said.

SABMiller has submitted on October 7 to the Financial Services Authority a prospectus relating to the new SABMiller shares to be issued pursuant to the major transaction in South America which was announced on 19 July 2005, and which was approved by the shareholders of SABMiller at an Extraordinary General Meeting held on 7 ...

Chile's biggest brewing company, Compañía Cervecerías Unidas S.A. (CCU) announced on October 7 its sales volume increased by 6.1 % in the third quarter compared with the same quarter last year, to 2.62 million hectolitres.

CCU said in a statement that beer sales volume rose 4.9 % in Chile in the third quarter 2005 up to 799,224 hl, and 6.0 % in Argentina up to 452,094 hl.

In the first three quarters on 2005 CCU’s beer sales volume increased by 9.5% year-on-year in Chile up to 2.78 million hl and by 7.2% in Argentina up to 1.48 million hl.

The above-mentioned figures were reported on October 7 as preliminary third quarter 2005 consolidated results. CCU plans to release its consolidated third quarter results by the end of October.

CCU is a diversified beverage company operating principally in Chile and Argentina. CCU is the largest Chilean brewer, the second-largest Argentine brewer, the third-largest Chilean soft drink producer, the second-largest Chilean wine producer, the largest Chilean mineral water producer, one of the largest Chilean pisco producer and also participates in the confectionery industry in Chile. Australia: Lion Nathan secures injunction to stop the shareholders’ meeting at Coopers

The brewer Lion Nathan said it has secured an injunction stopping its takeover target, Coopers Brewery, from holding a shareholders' meeting later this month to consider a resolution removing Lion Nathan's pre-emptive rights to buy Coopers shares, AFX communicated on October 11.

The move follows Lion Nathan, launching a A$ 352 mln hostile takeover bid for Coopers last month at A$ 260 per share, which Coopers has rejected. Federal Court Justice Alan Goldberg granted on October 10 an injunction stopping the October 20 meeting of Coopers shareholders going ahead.

Goldberg specified that if Coopers promptly presented a more comprehensive explanatory memorandum to shareholders, the meeting may be able to proceed on October 20. Under the Coopers constitution, Coopers shares up for sale must first be offered to another Coopers shareholder, secondly to AMP or any other Coopers employee superannuation fund and thirdly to Lion Nathan.

Lion Nathan argues that if Coopers shareholders vote in favour of the resolution to remove Lion Nathan's pre-emptive rights, they will effectively put an end to the takeover offer.

So far Lion Nathan states that it has obtained agreements from 11 of Coopers' 117 shareholders wanting to sell their shares in the South Australian brewer. In its ...

Russia: SUN Interbrew is to produce and distribute Löwenbräu® in Russia

Heineken Russia and SUN Interbrew Limited (SIL) announced on October 7 the signing of an agreement to transfer rights related to the production and distribution of the Löwenbräu® brand in the territory of the Russian Federation.

Originally belonging to the Spaten-Löwenbräu group, the Löwenbräu® brand was acquired by InBev in 2004. Löwenbräu® was brewed by Heineken for over six years at its facility in St. Petersburg. Now Heineken Russia and InBev have agreed that the famous Bavarian brand can be transferred to SUN Interbrew, InBev’s Russian subsidiary.

Effective November 3, 2005, SUN Interbrew will be responsible for the distribution of Löwenbräu® beer in Russia. In the meantime, Heineken Brewery LLC in St. Petersburg will continue brewing Löwenbräu® for SIL until February 28, 2006. As from March 1, 2006, SUN Interbrew will have full responsibility for the production and distribution of Löwenbräu® in Russia.

Heineken Russia will receive financial compensation in relation to the changes related to the Löwenbräu® brand. The parties have agreed that the amount of such compensation will remain confidential.

Heineken Russia embodies a group of 10 non-listed companies located in different parts of the Russian Federation. Heineken NV acquired the first brewery in 2002 in St. Petersburg (Heineken Brewery LLC), ...

Belarus: Baltic Beverage Holding (BBH) targets Belarus beer market

Baltic Beverage Holding (BBH), a 50-50% joint venture between Scottish & Newcastle and Carlsberg A/S, is to target the highly challenging market conditions of Belarus, media reports posted on October 10. BBH is aiming to embark on a promotional push in the eastern European state hoping boosting sales of its Arsenalinoe brand by up to 40%.

Belarus is a state that has been condemned by the European Union and the United Nations, and branded the “last dictatorship in Europe” by President George W Bush.

A spokesperson for Edinburgh-based S&N said BBH expects there to be huge demand for the company's brands in Belarus. However, he stressed there were no plans to put an "operational system" into Belarus, according to Datamonitor Newswire.

With a population of 10 million, Belarus is seen as one of the most interesting and high-potential beer markets in the region. However, despite this potential for future growth, foreign brewers in Belarus are faced with import limitations and a strong lobby for local products. The authorities insist that local products should make up 85% of retailers’ goods on offer.

In addition, the US government advises American companies to avoid Belarus altogether, in what President George Bush branded as the "last dictatorship ...

Malt News
EU: EU malt export licence bookings were of 485,000 tonnes by the end of September

EU malt export licence bookings from July 1 to September 27, 2005, were 485,000 tonnes versus 626,500 tonnes at the same time last year. If license fixations continued at the same pace until June 30 of next year, they would total 1.940 million tonnes versus 2.220 million tonnes last year and 2.478 million tonnes two years ago. The loss in two years' time would amount to 538,000 tonnes or 22 %.

Analysts think that the reasons are well known, expansion of malting industries in Eastern Europe and South America makes these countries less dependent on malt imports. Liberal bilateral trade policies of Australia favour malt exports from that country.

EU maltsters cannot be blamed, unless one wants to criticize international malting companies for investing also outside the EU. (We do not.) Or one could blame the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the EU, which is still much too protectionist for today's world.

Barley News
Australia: AWB seeds launch new malting barley called ‘Buloke’

The Australian Wheat Board (AWB) announced on October 10 that a new export quality malting barley ‘Buloke’ is being launched by AWB seeds on October 11 offering extremely high yields in low to medium rainfall districts.

AWB Seeds Manager Denis McGrath says Buloke is best suited to regions in south eastern Australia with between 325mm – 450mm annual rainfall, and offers early to mid season maturity and excellent foliar leaf disease resistance.

“Buloke has been bred by Victorian Department of Primary Industries breeder David Moody as part of the Malting Barley Quality Improvement Program,” Mr McGrath said. “It has is a tall, semi erect variety with growth habits that are similar to Barque but slower than the Sloop varieties.”

In Victoria, Buloke flowers at approximately the same time as Schooner, and about 3-4 days later than SloopSA. Limited data suggests Buloke is a few days later flowering than Schooner in central NSW.

“Buloke has reasonable straw strength, moderately good head retention and is tolerant to pre harvest sprouting similar to Gairdner,” Mr McGrath said. “Longterm (2002-2004) yield data indicates Buloke is the highest yielding malt barley variety in the Murray Mallee and Victorian Mallee. “Compared to current malting varieties grown in its area of ...

Canada: AAFC estimates increased Canadian barley supply and exports

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) released a report on October 7 according to which the barley production is estimated to fall by 8% from 2004-05, as a result of lower area and yields. Total supply, however, is projected to increase slightly due to high carry-in stocks which resulted from the large production of low-quality barley in 2004-05. The quality of the 2005-06 crop is estimated to be below normal. Exports are forecast to rise by 34% due to higher feed barley exports. Carry-out stocks are expected to drop significantly, returning to a near-normal level. The off-Board feed barley price is forecast to decline slightly. Malting barley prices will be pressured by higher world production, with the CWB PRO for Special Select 2-Row down by C$8/t from 2004-05 at C$171/t.
