Brewery News
Australia: Lion Nathan announced a year profit up 40.4 pct

Lion Nathan Ltd., Australia's second-largest brewery, announced on November 9 its annual profit increased 40.4 %, driven by stronger beer revenues in its major market for 12 months ended September 30, 2005.

Sydney-based Lion Nathan, which has made a A$352 million ($257 million) takeover offer for unlisted Coopers Brewery Ltd., said net profit for the year to Sept. 30 was A$224.8 million, from A$160.1 million a year ago, according to Reuters.

The company, 46 % owned by Japan's Kirin Brewery Co., said profit before one-off items was up 13.7 percent to A$230.4 million, in line with company guidance for earnings between A$230 million and A$235 million.

Lion Nathan makes Tooheys, XXXX, Hahn and Steinlager beers. Its main competitor in Australia is Foster's Group Ltd., while in New Zealand it competes with DB Breweries, a unit of Singapore's Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd.

Chief Executive Rob Murray plans to boost advertising and marketing of higher priced beers such as James Squire and Hahn, which are more profitable than cheaper brews, as he tries to limit the impact of a stagnant overall beer market. Murray made a hostile A$352 million bid for Coopers Brewery Ltd., Australia's No. 3 brewer, in September to add ...

Russia & Baltics: BBH beer volumes continued to grow in double digits rate in Q3 2005

Scottish & Newcastle announced on November 8 third quarter results (July to September 2005) from its 50% owned joint venture Baltic Beverages Holding AB (BBH). S&N posted 10% beer volume growth for BBH. Net sales up 21%(EUR). EBITDA up 15%(EUR). Russian market share up 1.0%pt to 36.9%.

3Q04 and 9M04 comparatives have been adjusted for the impact of the change to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). BBH remains confident in the growth prospects for its markets, and anticipates continued profitable volume growth in the fourth quarter.

BBH beer volumes continued to grow in double digits rate in the third quarter and again grew significantly ahead of the Russian market. The full year Russian market volume growth forecast is 4-5%.

In the third quarter, BBH’s market share in Russia grew by 1.0%point to 36.9% compared to the third quarter of 2004. For the nine month period January to September market share was 2.9% points higher at 36.5%. BBH continued to lead the Russian beer market in the quarter improving further on the very strong first half performance.

In Ukraine, BBH’s third quarter domestic volumes grew by +25% showing a reversal of the negative performance in the first half. For the nine months to September ...

Denmark: Carlsberg announces its results for Q3 2005

Carlsberg reported on November 8 its results. The company announced that the third quarter brought continued growth in the business, and total beer sales volumes (calculated pro rata) for the first nine months were 10% up on last year. This included 4% organic growth, with positive contributions from BBH, Eastern Europe and Asia.

The Carlsberg brand made progress during the quarter, but nine-month sales volumes were down 3%, which should be seen in connection with the high sales figures during last year's EURO 2004 campaign. The Tuborg brand continued to grow rapidly with volumes up 10%, gaining ground in Russia, Bulgaria, Denmark and elsewhere.

The overall market scenario was unchanged in the third quarter: beer sales volumes generally showed a slight decline in Western Europe but continued to grow strongly in several Eastern European markets, including Russia. Net revenue grew by almost DKK 500m to DKK 10.7bn in the third quarter, due primarily to strong growth at BBH.

Third-quarter operating profit increased by 8% to DKK 1,571m, with growth in all regions except Asia, where investments in the marketing of Carlsberg Chill in China were carried out.

The arbitrations between Carlsberg and Chang (Thailand) were settled during the quarter, ending more than two years ...

Singapore & Mongolia: Asia Pacific Breweries to build a 300,000 hl brewery in Mongolia

Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) announced on November 7th that the brewing company, sets up its brewery in Mongolia in 18 months time.

The brewer of the world-renowned Tiger Beer has entered into an agreement with the MCS Group for a greenfield project to build a 300,000 hectolitre brewery. This comes hot on the heels of APB's acquisition of a 60% stake in a brewery in Sri Lanka in late September 2005. The joint-venture, MCS-Asia Pacific Brewery LLC (MCS-APB), is 55% owned by APB while MCS owns the remaining 45%. The brewery is expected to cost an estimated US$15 million and will be funded by a combination of equity, which will be contributed by shareholders in proportion to their shareholdings and borrowings.

MCS-APB represents APB's maiden equity investment in Mongolia. The investment is consistent with APB's regional expansion strategy to develop greenfield brewery opportunities and acquire strategic interests in domestic breweries within selected markets to create defendable and profitable businesses.

"Mongolia is amongst the emerging markets that APB has identified for growth and the partnership with MCS has given APB access to the growing Mongolian beer market," said Mr Koh Poh Tiong, Chief Executive Officer, APB.

"Our investment is part of ...

Australia: Coopers makes the hard move in its takeover war with Lion Nathan

Coopers Brewery has made the hard move in its takeover war with Lion Nathan. More precisely, Coopers, has matched Lion Nathan's $260a-share takeover offer, which according to analysts is very probable to ruin the Sydney brewer's hostile bid.

Coopers has written on November 7 to its 117 shareholders announcing a $260-a-share buyback. Coopers is also expected to announce ongoing capital-management initiatives in its target's statement, which is to be released within the next two weeks. In particular, this means that shareholders who wish to sell out in the future will have the opportunity to do so.

A share valuation would have also been sent to shareholders, together with notification of the company's annual meeting, to be held on November 29.

It is expected that Lion Nathan will not just observe this but will increase its $352 million bid.

However Coopers board is said to be confident that the buyback will satisfy the needs of the 5 to 10 per cent of shareholders interested in selling. "In reality, most shareholders have indicated they are not sellers. The next two to three years is where the growth is all going to come."

Malt News
France: Malteurop shut down its Reims malting plant of 92,000 Tonnes

The plan of shutting down the Reims malting plant with a capacity of 92000 tonnes has been announced to the staff representatives at an extraordinary workers council meeting held on November 3 at the head office in Reims.

The Managing Director of Malteurop International, Daniel Huvet, and the Managing Director of Malteurop, Alain Le Floch, commented: “A large overcapacity in Europe, with recent developments in port areas, the construction of massive production capacities in Eastern Europe and in the Americas, a highly competitive market situation regretfully force us to consider the closure of our Reims cost-underperforming malting location. Subject to negotiations with the workers council representatives, the Reims maltings should cease operations in the first quarter 2006.”

USA: New malthouses have been built in Montana and Idaho

In the U.S.A. three new malthouses have been built in Idaho and Montana, one of them, in good NAFTA style, owned by Modelo of Mexico. U.S. farmers, on the other hand, seem to have become increasingly disenchanted with the growing of barley.

A U.S. Grains Council malt conference in Portland is taking place these days. The meeting is a publicity effort for U.S. malt and barley exports, which are not only needed by the industries, but also to regain barley farmers' confidence.

Barley News
Japan & Canada: CWB develops unique niche for barley in Japanese market

Canadian Wheat Board announced on November 7 that a ship is currently loading in Vancouver with western Canadian barley destined for the rice bowls of Japan, part of a growing new market developed by the CWB.

The cargo of 8 000 tonnes of Legacy barley, a six-row malting variety, will partly be used as a rice extender for human consumption. The CWB has also been successful in sales of barley for shochu, a distilled alcoholic beverage made from two-row barley. The shochu market, which purchased 5 000 tonnes of Canadian barley for the first time earlier this year, had previously been supplied exclusively by Australia.

"This is a promising new market for the expansion of barley sales from Western Canada to Japan," said Bill Spafford, CWB vice-president of sales and marketing. "It highlights the value of relationships built through the efforts of our sales and product development experts and our industry partners, including Prairie farmers themselves."

Over the past few years, the CWB has cultivated a relationship with Zenbakuren, a federation of Japanese barley processors who span a wide range of barley users. It followed a collaborative research project involving the CWB, the Canadian Grain Commission’s Grain Research Laboratory, the University of Saskatchewan ...

Russia: The availability of malting barley and the needs of malting industry in Russia

Of the total crop of 16-17 Million tonnes about 3.0 to 3.5 Million tonnes may be selected for malting. Total needs of the rapidly growing malting industry, according to analysts estimations would be of 3.75 Million tonnes.

Quality of domestic malting barley is decidedly better than last year. Russian feed barley exports were 650,000 tonnes during July/September. Due to dry conditions Russia planted less winter wheat in the regions adjacent to the Black Sea, and the 2006 grain crop is expected smaller.

For a large country like Russia the impact of a partial crop failure will be much less dramatic than for neighbouring Ukraine.

Hops News
USA: Beer's hops inhibit cancer-causing enzymes, according to the latest research

Research at Oregon State University shows that beer contains a micronutrient that inhibits cancer-causing enzymes, United Press International (UPI) posted on November 7.

The compound, xanthohumol, was first isolated by Oregon State 10 years ago and an increasing number of laboratories across the world have begun studying the compound, said Fred Stevens, an assistant professor of medicinal chemistry at Oregon State's College of Pharmacy.

The substance comes from the hops plant used to give beer its aroma and flavor, ABC News reported.

Most beers made today are low on hops, however, and so don't contain much xanthohumol. But beers such as porter, stout and ales have much higher levels of the compound. Mice studies show that the compound is metabolized quickly by the body, so it's hard to get a large amount in the body at one time, Stevens said.

"It clearly has some interesting chemo-preventive properties, and the only way people are getting any of it right now is through beer consumption," he said.
