Brewery News
South Africa: Premium beer market to grow faster as in most other countries

The premium beer market is growing fast in South Africa, as it is in comparison with the most other countries. And the speed at which the market is growing here has taken many people - including industry leader SA Breweries (SAB) - by surprise. At a recent SABMiller results presentation, CEO Graham Mackay said: "The premium sector in South Africa is growing far faster and off a much higher base than anyone expected.”

Altough SAB dominates the beer market in South Africa, with nearly 98% share of the total beer market, this domination is most acute in the so-called mainstream segment of the market, with beers such as Carling Black Label, Castle Lager and Hansa.

In this segment there is virtually no competition. And though SAB is the largest player in the premium segment as well, its dominance is by no means as great. Estimates vary but it's probably safe to assume that SAB enjoys a share somewhere between 70% and 75% of the premium beer market.

Enhanced premium beer consumption is an aspirational effect - as people become wealthier, tastes change and the better things in life are sought, even if that means paying a premium for the ...

Malaysia: Carlsberg’s main strategy is ensuring the customers taste “quality” beer

Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia’s major concern has always been to produce the freshest and highest quality beer, according to the managing director Mogens Joenck.

“We are investing a great amount of time and effort to produce something of quality, not only to compete within the malt-liquor market itself, but also with the wine and hard liquor sector,” he said. In order to produce high quality beer, Joenck said the company was constantly making sure that all its processes – from choosing raw materials such as yeast to bottling its beer –were done well.

According to Joenck, the main strategy would be to ensure that customers always taste ‘quality’ in the beer, is to shorten the time between complete packaging of the beer at the factory and the delivery of the beer to the retail outlets and bars as much as possible.

“For us, there is nothing better than a glass of beer after a hard day’s work, even better than a glass of wine.” Joenck said much lower excise duties were imposed by the Government on hard liquor and wine compared with beer.

Chin Voon Loong explained, Carlsberg executive director: “When the Government raises taxes, it tends to look ...

Canada: Miller sues to end Canada licensing pact with Molson

Miller Brewing Co. is suing brewer Canadian business partner Molson and its U.S. parent company in order to terminate Molson's licensing and distribution arrangement with Miller in Canada, The Business Journal of Milwaukee and American City Business Journals Inc announced on December 19.

Milwaukee-based Miller said it filed a complaint Tuesday in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin in Milwaukee against the Molson Coors Brewing Co., Molson Inc., and Molson Canada 2005. Miller is seeking a declaratory judgment that it is entitled to terminate its licensing agreement with Molson, along with damages it specifies only as "in excess of $75,000."

Miller claims that after the merger of Molson Inc., Montreal, with one of Miller's main domestic competitors -- Golden, Colo.-based Adolph Coors Co. -- incentives for Molson to sell Miller's brands in Canada are "dramatically reduced," according to a Miller statement released Monday.

At the time the Molson/Coors deal was announced in July 2004, Molson brewed several Miller brands in Canada, a deal that had been in place since 1989. An official with Molson Coors Brewing could not immediately be reached for comment.

Miller now alleges that Molson Coors and Molson are "unwilling to promote" Miller's flagship ...

Japan: Tax authorities found out Suntory failed to declare a part of taxable income

Osaka tax authorities have detected that after a tax audit that the beverages maker Suntory did not declare 760 million yen in taxable income over a four-year period through December 2003, Kyodo announced on December 19.

The Regional Taxation Bureau of Osaka has imposed 240 million yen in back and penalty taxes against Suntory, and the company has made the payment in full.

The sources said Suntory failed to list some dividends it earned through equity holdings of overseas companies.

Philippines: San Miguel’s chairman against compromise deal with government on stake

Eduardo Cojuangco the San Miguel’s chairman is opposed to a compromise deal with the government in connection with its long-standing dispute over ownership of the Philippines' largest food and beverage conglomerate, his lawyer said on December 201, according to Dow Jones.

Cojuangco's lawyer Estelito Mendoza, who is also a director of San Miguel, stated that his client wants the 18-year dispute to be resolved via a court trial. In 1987, the government, through the Presidential Commission on Good Government, or PCGG, seized the shares of Cojuangco and groups he represents alleging they were acquired using funds for the development of the coconut industry. In week 50, the chairman of the PCGG proposed a compromise deal with Cojuangco may be the only way to resolve the dispute over the stakes, which combined represent close to half of San Miguel's shareholdings.

Cojuangco claims as a personal stake around 19%, plus the 27% now controlled by the PCGG. The PCGG is disputing ownership of both stakes. The remaining shares are owned by a number of shareholders, including Japan's Kirin Brewery.

"It is no longer time to talk of a compromise," said Mendoza. "None of (Cojuangco's) San Miguel stocks were acquired with coconut levy ...

China: Chinese hops supplier paves way for asset reorganization

Xinjiang Hops Co. Ltd., one of China's biggest hops and barley suppliers, has reached a compromise on debts with its 13 creditors in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, paving the way for the company's reorganization of assets, Asia Puls communicated on December 15.

The debts of Xinjiang Hops were reduced from more than 2 billion yuan (US$247.7 million) to 500 million yuan, according to the company's agreements signed here Tuesday with creditors, including asset management companies like Huarong, Changcheng, and Dongfang, and the Agricultural Bank of China.

"The signing of agreements with our creditors marks a big step for the future successful regrouping of this financially troubled company, and ensures the investment of our new shareholders' high-quality assets and cash," said Zhou Yingjian, director and general manager of Xinjiang Hops.

The Shanghai-listed company ran into trouble in 2003 when its founder, Aikelamu Aishayoufu, disappeared, leaving behind about 1 billion yuan in previously unknown loan guarantees and other financial liabilities.

The company's total debts include 1.6 billion yuan in bank loans and 470 million yuan from other financial institutions.
