Brewery News
Russia: In January-November 2005 Russian beer production increased by 6.1%

For the first eleven months of 2005 Russian brewers produced about 82.26 million hl of beer, Russian Beer Union communicated on December 22. It is important to mention that during January-November 2004 Russia brewed about 77.9 million hl of beer with an increase of 12% year-on-year. Russian Beer Union forecast an increase in country’s beer output for 2006 at about 5-7%.

The Chairman of The Union Executive Committee, Vyacheslav Mamontov, commented: “In the second half of the year Russian brewers succeeded to influence positively the beer production trend, which was of only 3.7% in the first half of the year. That means the potential of the market is not yet exhausted. The increase is attributed manly to the marketing strategies of Russian companies and the launching of new brands in the market. Another positive contribution had the reforms of distribution system, performed by market makers.”

Thailand: Thai Beverage, Chang brewer, is sure of eventual listing

Thai Beverage Plc (ThaiBev), the brewer of Chang Beer, will continue its attempt to list on the Stock Exchange of Thailand and has brushed aside anticipation that it might try to list on either the Hong Kong or Singapore stock markets instead, The Bangkok Post communicated on December 21.

''The Securities and Exchange Commission told us to wait. We'll wait,'' said Kasemsant Weerakun, vice-president for corporate communications. However, Mr Kasemsant said that whether or not ThaiBev was listed on a stock market, it could continue with all its business plans since it had enough cashflow to expand on its own. ''Financial matters are not at all an issue for a company with this level of revenue,'' he said.

ThaiBev, a holding company with 63 subsidiaries and 20,000 employees, earned profits of 10 billion baht last year on sales of 90 billion baht.

Mr Kasemsant also denied the rumour that a 55% stake in the SET-listed Oishi Group, a green-tea producer that controls 70% of its market, was acquired by a representative of the company or its president, billionaire Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi. ''The person who has purchased the 55% stake in Oishi Group has no relationship with either the company or Mr Charoen,'' insisted Mr ...

Cuba: Cuban Tinima brewery to triple beer production in 2006

According to plans the Cuban Tinima brewery in Camaguey, will triple its production in 2006 of a total of nine millions of boxes of beers and malts, the director of this industry, Jose Artola announced on December 21.

Artola said to Prensa Latina that the Camagueyan brand of beer Tinima will increase its production to 20 million of boxes in 2006, and now it commercializes its beverages in countries such as Germany, England, Barbuda, Mexico and Cuba.

Only in December this brwery, based in Camaguey, some 533 kilometres from Havana, will produce more than 250 thousand of boxes of bottled beer, and 490 thousand of boxes kegged, 15 percent more than what the brewery produced on December, 2004.

In order to expand its market abroad, Tinima will submit its beer at the Trade Fair in Japan on March 2006, invited by the Yetro Corp in that Asian county. The refreshing beverage is sold in the Island and abroad in labelled bottles under the brands Tinima, Cubay and Floridita, which have a great success because of its excellent quality.

USA: The US off-Premises Beer Market Grew by 39% from 2000 to 2005 and is Now Worth $8.5 Billion

Research and Markets research and markets has announced on December 22 that the addition of Imported Beer in the United States to their offering.

The off-premises market for imported beer in the U.S. in 2005 is estimated at $8.5 billion. The market grew 39% between 2000 and 2005 at current prices, outperforming domestic beer sales. It also bettered the market's fastest growing sub-segment, light/low calorie beer (see Domestic Beer, September 2005). At current prices, imports grew 39% during the review period, compared to 16% for the entire domestic market and 27% for domestic light/low calorie beer. Growth was driven by consumer's interest in premium alcoholic beverage products and their willingness to "trade-up" from domestics to imports.

The imported beer market faces increasing competition from domestic light beer, wine, and spirits. Although imported beer products have continued to sell well, beer sales in general have declined or slowed. As wine and spirits gain in popularity, consumption of beer is declining on a per capita basis. The future success of the industry will depend on its ability to maintain imported beer's positioning as an "affordable luxury," and win back consumers who now favor wine or spirits. Manufacturers will need to ...

Bulgaria: A new general manager has been appointed at Zagorka brewery

Bulgarian brewery, Zagorka A.D., announced on December 21 the appointment of a new general manager. Jan Derck van Karnebeek take up the new position January 1, 2006.

The former manager at Zagorka’s co-owner Heineken’s innovation department, Van Karnebeek will replace Dimitar Alexiev, who has been managing Heineken’s Slovak arm since last month.

“As a general manager of Zagorka I will focus my future activities on three major aspects: the management of a strong and balanced portfolio of profitable brands..., increasing of the efficiency and capacity of the distribution system, and reaching higher efficiency in production,” Jan Derck van Karnebeek said.

Due to a consistent brand policy, high quality of products and the strong commitment of our people, Zagorka Bulgaria has captured market share above 30 % and a leading position among Bulgaria’s most successful companies. The brewer has forecast pre-tax profits for this year of around EUR5m (US$5.9m), an increase of 39% on last year.

Heineken NV in cooperation with Coca-Cola HBC purchased Zagorka shares in 1994. In 1997 both companies also acquired a majority stake from Ariana Brewery in Sofia. Today, the company has reached a market leader position in the Bulgarian beer market. The company is ISO 9000:2000 certified.

Barley News
Ukraine: Most of winter barley crop in good and fair condition

Up to the moment winter barley crops in Ukraine have not shot out on 4.8 percent of the planted area (25,000 hectares); 36 percent of the crops (189,200 hectares) is in weak condition, Agrarian Policy Ministry's press-service reported with reference to the monitoring results of December 15, according to AgriMarket.Info’s statement from December 22.

Twenty three percent of the plantings is in good condition (120,700 hectares) and about 36 percent (189,000 hectares) - in fair one.

According to State Statistics Committee, the winter barley area in Ukraine for the 2006 crop has totalled 538,700 hectares (last year - 477,600 hectares).

USA: Demand move up the malting barley market

Some of the new markets for the region's malting barley and indications from the maltsters for higher contract prices in 2006 have nudged malting barley prices forward at local elevators. However, the huge corn crop and carryover supplies of barley that didn't make malting grade, prevented feed prices from advancing, according to the report from Farm and Ranch of December 22.

“Today we do have a $2.80 price for malting barley market delivered to Minneapolis and a $2.50 bid delivered to Spiritwood, (N.D.) so that isn't all bad,” according to Randy Brag, barley purchaser for Valley Grain in Casselton. “So there are some bright spots here and the bids are coming up. It appears that Cargill in Spiritwood has picked up some business, and there is a maltster on the West Coast who wants some Midwest barley. So there are some things happening here that have the market a little stronger right now.”

Nevertheless, Brag mentioned the malting barley deferred bids for around 60 days out are down slightly, and he feels part of this is due to the fact that very little grain has been hauled from the farms in southeastern North Dakota since Thanksgiving because of the ice covered roads.

“The ...

China: Chinese hops supplier paves way for asset reorganization

Xinjiang Hops Co. Ltd., one of China's biggest hops and barley suppliers, has reached a compromise on debts with its 13 creditors in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, paving the way for the company's reorganization of assets, Asia Puls communicated on December 15.

The debts of Xinjiang Hops were reduced from more than 2 billion yuan (US$247.7 million) to 500 million yuan, according to the company's agreements signed here Tuesday with creditors, including asset management companies like Huarong, Changcheng, and Dongfang, and the Agricultural Bank of China.

"The signing of agreements with our creditors marks a big step for the future successful regrouping of this financially troubled company, and ensures the investment of our new shareholders' high-quality assets and cash," said Zhou Yingjian, director and general manager of Xinjiang Hops.

The Shanghai-listed company ran into trouble in 2003 when its founder, Aikelamu Aishayoufu, disappeared, leaving behind about 1 billion yuan in previously unknown loan guarantees and other financial liabilities.

The company's total debts include 1.6 billion yuan in bank loans and 470 million yuan from other financial institutions.
