Brewery News
Thailand: Thaibev still keen to list on set, Finance Minister confident

Finance Minister Thanong Bidaya on Wednesday voiced confidence that Thai Beverage Public Company Limited, producer of Chang beer, still wanted to list on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), saying the company's negotiation for listing on the Singapore bourse had not yet been finalized, Asia Pulse posted on January 5

Charoen Siriwattanapakdi, Chairman of Thai Beverage, disclosed on Tuesday he had negotiated with Hsieh Fu Hua, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Singapore Exchange for listing of the company's shares on the market since there was mounting opposition to listing of the shares on the Thai bourse.

Dr. Thanong said he had once discussed with Mr. Charoen and received his affirmation that Thai Beverage would give a top priority to SET if it decides to list on the stock market. The company had also studied and discussed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) information on listing on SET for long. "So, I firmly believe Chang beer will list and stay with the Thai stock market," he said.

The minister revealed that he raised a discussion on possible cross-trading of shares between Thailand and Singapore during a previous joint meeting of the Thai and Singapore cabinets as part of efforts to ...

UK: 2005 was one of the most significant years in the history of SABMiller

The year 2005 will certainly remain as one of the more important in the history of world’s brewing force, SABMiller, Sunday Times posted on January 4. This is because SABMiller have beaten keen competition in its US$7.8 billion purchase of Colombia-based brewer Bavaria SA, while also adding a number of smaller businesses to its portfolio during the year.

And as for 2006, although lacking such a large target as Bavaria, SABMiller's acquisition spree is set to continue in such countries as China and Russia, where there remain some smaller independent breweries, according to Sunday Times.

SABMiller, which is listed in London and Johannesburg, is ending 2005 with the status of the world's second largest brewer by volume, with the addition of Bavaria expected to lift its annual lager volumes to around 175 million hectoliters from 148 million hectoliters for the year to end-March 2005. Earnings before interest, tax and amortisation (EBITA) should also rise to an estimated $3.5 billion from $2.4 billion.

The purchase of South America's second-largest brewer also rounds out the SABMiller portfolio in geographic terms, adding sizeable beer sales volumes and dominant market positions in Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, and Panama.

The company's strong position in fast-growing beer ...

Finland: EU prolonged Finland's right to curb the amount of beer that travellers could bring from Russia

EU prolonged Finland's right to curb the amount of beer that travellers could bring from Russia, aiding costlier Finnish retailers, bolstering tax revenue and addressing worries about drunkenness, The Moscow Times communicated on December 30.

Finland can limit beer carried by people arriving from non-EU countries including Russia to 16 liters until the end of 2007 under the European legislation published on Thursday. A current cap expires on December 31, and without an extension travelers would be allowed to bring an average 200 liters of beer into Finland from outside the EU.

"Between Finland and neighbouring Russia, there still exists a considerable disparity in prices," the European Commission said when recommending a prolongation in September. Cross-border shopping in this case has "negative consequences for retail shops and tax revenues" and causes "social and health problems," the commission said.

Finland applies a 16-liter cap on personal beer imports from non-EU nations through an exemption granted in 2000 from an EU law on the tax-free status of goods in the luggage of travelers. The current exemption allows for a cap of 6 liters, a limit that Finland has not fully applied, according to the commission.

Russia: Sun Interbrew starts to build its first plant outside Irkutsk

Sun Interbrew, Russia's second largest brewery, has officially confirmed its intentions to build its first plant outside Irkutsk, Russia’s daily, Kommersant, communicated on December 27. Until now, the company has bought all of its plants. Analysts note that the beer marketing Russia is reaching a new stage of development. All available assets have been bought up by the large holdings and now the have to build all of their new capacity.

Sun Interbrew's plans were announced yesterday by first deputy head of the administration of Irkutsk Region Yury Paranichev. He said that Sun Interbrew president Joseph Strella sent a letter to Irkutsk Region Governor Alexander Tishanin expressing the company's desire to launch its own production there. Construction is to begin in 2006 in the city of Angara, 40 km. from Irkutsk. Investment is to come to ?70 million and production capacity will be 40 million dal. Construction is to be completed at the end of 2007. Sun Interbrew has confirmed that information. Sun Interbrew's interest in eastern Russia has long been known. Its easternmost facility is now in Omsk. To encompass he entire country, the holding needs at least two more enterprises, one in Siberia and one in the Russian ...

UK & Bosnia: Investment fund Altima Partners to buy 53.8% stake in Bosnia

UK-based investment fund Altima Partners on December 28 bought a 53.81 percent stake in Bosnia's second-biggest brewer, Banjalucka Pivara, from the Bosnian Serb Republic for 23 million Bosnian marka, according to a release of Reuters. Altima Partners, which manages some $1.5 billion in assets, pledged to continue brewing beer in the next three years and invest 7.8 million marka in that period. It will also keep all of Banjalucka Pivara's 376 workers.

"We want Banjalucka Pivara to become a leading brewer in this part of Europe. We hope that we will be able to turn it into a very successful company," Jonathan Derry-Evans of Altima Partners said after signing the deal.

The brewery had sales of 15.8 million marka in the first half of this year and posted a loss of 455,000 marka. Its capital was 53.4 million marka with 94 million marka in assets while its debt stood at some 40 million marka. It was Bosnia's leading brewer by sales until 2004 when cut-price imported beer from Serbia halved their sales to around 300,000 hectolitres per year.

It is the only brewery in the Bosnian Serb Republic with four others based in the Muslim-Croat federation.

Czech Republic: One of the ways to increase market share is to produce specialty beers

Some smaller breweries face serious threats to their efforts to stay competitive, according to Czech analysts. On the other hand they said the Czech beer market is safe. Annual beer consumption is fairly steady at 160 liters per person, the highest in the world, and market share remains unchanged, according to an article in Czech Business Weekly.

As in years past, brewing group Plzeňsk? Prazdroj, owned by brewing giant SABMiller, is leading the market with a 49 percent share. The No. 2 group, Pivovary Staropramen, owned by the Belgium-based InBev, is holding on to its 14 to 15 percent share. The other major brewers each account for 5 percent or less of the market.

One of the few ways to increase market share is by producing specialty beers, such as semi-dark or flavored beers, both of which are growing in popularity as the beer-drinking demographic changes to include more professionals and women. But even so, specialty brews account for less than 4 percent of sales.

Imported beers, while growing in popularity in most countries around the world, account for less than 2 percent of sales here. “Imports aren’t a worry at all [for Czech brewers],” said Jan Vesel?, chairman of the Czech Beer ...

USA: Cargill to offer 2006 barley contracts during Jamestown Ag Expo

Cargill announced on December 29 that the representatives from Cargill Malt in Spiritwood, N.D., will be offering 2006 barley contracts for interested farmers during the Jamestown Ag Expo. The session entitled “Cargill Malting Barley Contracts-2006” is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2006 at the Civic Center in Jamestown, N.D.

Cargill’s grower contracting program offers production contracts directly to farmers for specific malting barley varieties. It aims to assist farmers in managing their economic risks while encouraging malting barley production in the Upper Midwest - of the United States.

“Our barley grower program is another way Cargill is working to offer solutions to farmers and customers,” said John Zietz, Cargill Malt’s Barley Supply Chain Manager. “The Jamestown Ag Expo offers farmers a great opportunity to learn about the benefits of barley contracting in 2006.”

Grower contracting not only encourages higher-quality malting barley production, but it has given producers a more direct feedback loop with brewers, provides producers with certain force majeure (“Act of God”) protections, and helps them become eligible for crop insurance, in the event that the barley doesn’t make malting quality.

In November, Cargill began a series of meetings to offer farmers information on its 2006 barley contracting ...
